The Normal Process of Buying a Dog

Unfortunately, the number of fraud cases in Sweden is increasing, and the risk of being scammed is now very real. It is therefore important to know what to look out for and to understand how the process of buying a dog normally works. At Skaffa Hund, we recommend that you do your research before buying and follow the steps below.

When buying a dog, the Consumer Sales Act currently applies, which is the same law that governs, for example, the purchase of a washing machine. In April 2018, the Riksdag’s Committee on Civil Affairs decided that the government should review the consumer legislation that applies to the purchase of live animals. There is therefore hope that the law will be better adapted to the purchase of different animals. We have collected a number of relevant laws under “Rules, Guidelines and Legislation,” which you can read about here.

Skaffa Hund recommends the following process when buying a dog:

  1. Search for a dog on skaffahund.se using, for example, the Breed Guide
  2. Read up on various tips under Considering a dog and Facts and statistics, as well as what it’s like to have a dog under You and your dog
  3. Decide which breed(s) you are interested in
  4. Find suitable sellers (often near where you live) and evaluate them
  5. Contact the seller to arrange a visit to the breeder so you can meet the dog
  6. Ask for information such as:
    • purchase agreement
    • pedigree
    • ID marking
    • registration with SKK
    • veterinary health certificate
  7. Read through and check all the documents
  8. Meet the dog (and the dog’s mother) in the breeder’s home environment
    • Ask questions about the pedigree, etc.
    • Discuss ID marking, veterinary check-ups, etc.
    • Read our page on how to avoid being scammed here
  9. Decide whether to buy
  10. Pay a deposit to the seller
  11. Buy, among other things (see our Checklist under “Pickup”):
    • dog bed
    • food and water bowls
    • leash
    • poop bags
    • dog food (you can use the Food Guide for help)
  12. Take out insurance for the dog before or when you pick it up. Consider different insurance options based on your needs. To help you, you can use Trygg-Hansa, our chosen partner. With ManyPets you can insure your puppy from four weeks of age.
  13. Pick up the dog and pay the remaining amount
  14. Receive:
    • registration certificate
    • purchase agreement
    • puppy health certificate
    • vaccination certificate
    • schedule for vaccinations and deworming
    • ownership registration form for Jordbruksverket
    • most kennels also provide a bag of the food the puppy has been eating
  15. After some time, contact the breeder if you have any questions

We have chosen to partner with the insurance provider Trygg Hansa, which offers a wide range of insurance options for dogs of all breeds. You can take out insurance from the time the puppy is 6 weeks old until it turns 8 years old.
