The 21 Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2020

Choosing a Dog Breed

There are many factors that determine which breed is right for you – such as your living situation, how prone the breed is to illness, how much time you want to spend on the dog, how much it sheds, whether it needs to be especially good with children, how you want to spend time with your dog, what size you prefer, and whether you want a companion dog, a hunting dog, or a working dog.

Skaffa Hund can now present a list from the Swedish Board of Agriculture of Sweden’s most popular dog breeds, based on the number of dogs registered in each breed up to and including December 1, 2019. The statistics do not include mixed-breed dogs (definition by the Swedish Board of Agriculture).

The Statistics

As of December 1, 2019, there are a total of 946,206 dogs in Sweden, of which 666,667 are purebred dogs distributed across 421 breeds (definition by the Swedish Board of Agriculture).

The figures show that just under 60,000 new dogs were registered in 2019 up to and including December 1, an increase of about 6%. Around 70% of all new dogs are purebreds.

From the statistics we can also see, for example, that:

  • The 10 most popular breeds account for just under 30%
  • The 27 most popular breeds account for about 50%
  • 49 breeds have fewer than 10 registered dogs
  • 139 breeds have fewer than 100 registered dogs

Here are the top 21:

  1. Labrador Retriever (31,382 dogs)
  2. German Shepherd (30,512 dogs)
  3. Golden Retriever (25,579 dogs)
  4. Jack Russell Terrier (23,020 dogs)
  5. Swedish Elkhound (Jämthund) (17,975 dogs)
  6. Rottweiler (14,824 dogs)
  7. Border Collie (12,734 dogs)
  8. Chihuahua, smooth coat (12,634 dogs)
  9. Chihuahua, long coat (12,396 dogs)
  10. Cocker Spaniel (11,726 dogs)
  11. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (11,517 dogs)
  12. French Bulldog (11,116 dogs)
  13. Poodle, miniature (10,195 dogs)
  14. Shetland Sheepdog (9,901 dogs)
  15. American Staffordshire Terrier (9,020 dogs)
  16. Danish-Swedish Farmdog (8,418 dogs)
  17. English Springer Spaniel (8,086 dogs)
  18. Dachshund (7,914 dogs)
  19. Bichon Havanais (Havanese) (7,812 dogs)
  20. Yorkshire Terrier (7,739 dogs)
  21. Flatcoated Retriever (7,725 dogs)

The most common dogs are therefore the Labrador and the German Shepherd. One in 20 dogs is either a Labrador or a German Shepherd. If you combine smooth and long-haired Chihuahuas, they come in fourth place with 25,030 dogs.
