The Standard Poodle is the largest of the Poodle's four official sizes. It is an active companion dog that needs both close cooperation and substantial coat care. The name **kungspudel** is sometimes used in everyday Swedish, but it is not a separate breed or size. In Sweden, the variant's official name is **Pudel, stor**; on this English page it is **Standard Poodle**.

A Standard Poodle can suit a committed first-time owner, but the breed is not low-maintenance simply because it is cooperative. A prospective owner needs to enjoy teaching everyday skills, provide purposeful activity and look after the coat even when the weather is wet and the week is busy.

## Appearance & Coat

The Standard Poodle should be balanced and athletic, with a body that is slightly longer than its height at the withers – not completely square. The official height is over 45 up to and including 60 cm, with a further 2 cm of upward tolerance. That tolerance does not make 62 cm the normal target height. Because the breed standard specifies no weight, an adult should be assessed by its proportions and body condition, not against a supposedly official number of kilograms.

The standard recognises two coat structures. The curly-coated Poodle has a dense, fine, woolly and tightly curled coat, while the corded Poodle has a coat formed into long, distinct cords. Companion dogs are often kept in a practical, shorter trim, but a short trim does not remove the need for bathing, working through the coat and clipping.

The approved Poodle colours are broader than many older breed descriptions suggest. Alongside solid black, white, brown, grey and fawn, the current standard recognises several specified multi-coloured patterns. These include white combined with black, grey, brown or fawn, as well as tan-pointed, tricolour and brindle coats. The multi-coloured options were added to the international standard that took effect in Sweden in 2024. Older statements that a Poodle must always be a solid colour are therefore out of date.

The coat grows continuously and needs a plan. How often it needs detangling, bathing and clipping depends on coat length, trim, activity and how readily that particular coat mats. Check all the way down to the skin instead of brushing only the surface. Calmly accustom a puppy to a comb, clippers, a dryer, paw handling and standing still; this makes future care easier.

Standard Poodles are often described as low-shedding, but low shedding does not mean allergy-free. Dog allergens occur in skin and saliva, among other sources, and a person's reaction can differ between individual dogs – even littermates. Someone with allergies should therefore not choose a Standard Poodle solely because of the breed name or a promise of a “hypoallergenic” coat.

## Temperament & Personality

According to the breed standard, the Standard Poodle should be alert, active, loyal and easy to teach and train. In daily life, this often appears as a dog that quickly notices patterns, seeks contact and likes to take part in family activities. That same attentiveness also means the dog can quickly learn unwanted routines when rules, rewards and expectations are unclear.

Being easy to train does not mean that every Standard Poodle has the same temperament, and an intelligence ranking does not explain how a dog behaves in daily life. Results from Poodles that have completed the Swedish Behaviour and Personality Assessment can show shared traits, but they describe the dogs that took part – not every Standard Poodle. Social confidence, activity level, sensitivity to sound, interest in chasing and the ability to settle can vary with inheritance, early experience and training.

If possible, meet the puppy's mother and adult relatives. Pay less attention to whether they can perform a trick and more to how they recover from a surprise, greet without remaining highly aroused and settle when nothing is happening. Ask the breeder which traits genuinely recur in the family and how the planned pairing is expected to work in an ordinary home.

A Standard Poodle can be a good choice for a first-time owner who enjoys training and accepts the coat work. It is less suitable for someone mainly seeking an independent dog or a large dog requiring minimal day-to-day contact and activity.

## Training & Exercise

The Standard Poodle needs physical exercise and mental activity every day, but there is no universal number of minutes that suits every dog. Age, health, fitness, weather, surface and recovery all affect a good plan. A balanced day includes walks and opportunities to sniff, explore, cooperate and rest undisturbed.

The breed often enjoys training in which it can understand a task: loose-lead work, recall, retrieving, scent work, body awareness or other dog sports. Short, clear sessions can be combined with skills practised in real settings. The aim is not to keep the dog occupied constantly, but to develop a dog that can shift between activity and calm.

For a puppy, quality and gradual exposure matter more than a mechanical minutes-per-age rule. Let the puppy move at its own pace on varied but safe surfaces, provide breaks and increase the load gradually. Plan the next session according to how the puppy moves, maintains focus and settles afterwards.

The Poodle's history as a water-retrieving dog explains why water and retrieving often appear in breed descriptions. It does not, however, guarantee that every Standard Poodle wants to swim. Introduce water without force, choose safe locations and teach the dog to enter and leave on cue.

## Health

The most important verifiable requirement for Swedish Standard Poodle breeding concerns hip dysplasia: both parents must have an official hip result before mating for their offspring to be registered under Swedish Kennel Club rules. A statement that the parents are “health tested” is therefore not enough – ask which examinations were performed and check the results.

Hips are graded from A to E. A and B are considered normal, and the Swedish programme for Standard Poodles also permits grade C in breeding. The Swedish Poodle Club's strategy is that dogs graded D or E should not be used. An individual result is still only part of the picture, because both inheritance and environment affect hip development.

The Standard Poodle also has a hip dysplasia index. The index combines the dog's own result with information from relatives; a value of 100 represents the breed's estimated average breeding value at the time of calculation. The Swedish Poodle Club recommends an estimated litter index of at least 97 for a planned pairing. This is a breeding recommendation and should be considered alongside the parents' grades, family results, overall health and genetic diversity – not as a stand-alone quality score for a puppy.

It is easy to confuse the health rules for the Poodle's four sizes. The formal Swedish DNA requirement for prcd-PRA applies to Toy, Miniature and Medium Poodles, not the Standard Poodle. The Swedish Poodle Club nevertheless encourages DNA testing for the eye disease rcd4 in all sizes and recommends eye examinations. A DNA result covers only the specific variant tested; it replaces neither an eye examination nor a broad assessment of the dog's health.

Before buying, these questions are more useful than a long generic disease list:

- What are the official hip results for both parents, and what is the pairing's estimated hip index?
- Are hip results available for adult siblings and other close relatives?
- Have the parents had eye examinations, and which DNA tests have been performed? Ask for the exact test name and result.
- Which recurring diagnoses, movement problems or other health concerns does the breeder know of in the family?
- How old are the older relatives, and how have their function and health developed?

## History & Origins

The Poodle's documented background is European, and France is listed as its country of origin in the international breed standard. The standard describes an origin close to the Barbet and early use in hunting waterfowl. The history of the breed's name is also connected with water and ducks.

The large Poodle variety was closest to the original water work before the Poodle developed further as a companion and show dog in several sizes. The Swedish Poodle Club's breed history explains the classic lion trim as a functional water trim: coat was left on vulnerable areas while other parts were shaved to make movement in water easier. Today's trims mainly serve practical and show purposes, but this connection helps explain the distinctive outline.

Poodle-like dogs appear in European art from the 15th century. Modern breed standardisation came much later, and today's Standard Poodle is judged as a companion dog – not as though every individual were already a trained water retriever.

## Living with the Breed

Living with a Standard Poodle works best when the household plans for three things at once: close cooperation, daily activity and coat care that never entirely takes a break. A dog that can use both body and mind while also learning to rest is usually easier to live with than one given ever more intense exercise alone.

A Standard Poodle can live in a flat if the owner provides regular trips outdoors, suitable activity and calm indoors. A garden can be convenient, but it does not replace walks, exposure to different environments or time together. Barking and restlessness should not be dismissed as inevitable breed traits; instead, consider the situation, reinforcement, stress, lack of suitable activity and the dog's opportunity to settle.

Being left alone must be introduced gradually, starting with short periods during which the dog remains secure. How quickly the training can progress depends on the individual. Before buying, plan for puppyhood, working days and help when needed rather than assuming that an easy-to-train dog will automatically cope alone for a particular length of time.

The breed can live successfully with children, other dogs and cats, but the breed name is not a guarantee. Children and dogs need adult supervision, and the dog needs an undisturbed resting place. Meetings with a cat or another dog should be calm and controlled, with room to create distance. The puppy's previous experiences, the adult animals' behaviour and the owner's introduction matter more than a general yes or no in a breed chart.

Finally, ask the breeder to demonstrate an ordinary coat-care session and explain the trim used on the dogs at home. Combine that practical demonstration with verifiable hip results, clear information about eyes and DNA tests, and an honest account of adult relatives' temperament. That way, your choice is based on the dog you may actually get – not on promises no breed can guarantee.

## Appearance & Coat

The thin, high-set ears have a distinctive candle-flame shape and should be fully erect from nine months of age.

The breed standard expressly describes 25–30 cm and 2.7–3.6 kg as ideal measurements. They are neither a general normal range nor the only measure of a sound dog. Also consider body condition, balance, movement and how the dog functions in everyday life. A dog outside the ideal weight is not automatically overweight or underweight.

The only accepted colour is black with tan markings on defined parts of the head, chest, legs and underside. Black and tan should be clearly separated. The coat should be short, close, smooth and glossy. It usually needs little work: wipe away dirt and use a soft brush or cloth when required. At the same time, check the skin, paws, nails, ears, eyes and mouth.

The short coat has no warm undercoat. Adjust time outdoors to the weather, the level of activity and the individual dog. A coat can be sensible in cold weather, but the dog still needs exercise and daily time outside. Rinse and dry the paws after contact with road salt, and introduce calm nail care and tooth brushing from an early age.

## Temperament & Personality

The English Toy Terrier is normally an alert and active companion, but breed descriptions cannot replace an assessment of the individual dog. The standard calls for an alert temperament without undue nervousness. Swedish breed documents describe many dogs as curious, affectionate and keen to be involved, but they also report considerable variation in owners' experiences.

The breed can be reserved with strangers, and some individuals are quick to bark when someone comes to the door. This does not mean that every English Toy Terrier is aloof or noisy. A prospective owner should meet the dam and, where possible, the sire or other adult relatives. Watch how they respond to unfamiliar people, sounds and gentle handling, and how quickly they recover after something unexpected.

The Swedish BPH behavioural assessment data do not provide a reliable profile of the breed. The 2022 breed-specific breeding strategy included only 21 BPH starts, and the published breed average was based on just 11 Swedish-born dogs. Results for this small group indicated uncertainty and lower confidence around unfamiliar people, but the sample is too small to describe all dogs. Ask about temperament across several generations and avoid clearly timid, nervous or easily stressed parents.

The breed's history as a rat catcher appears in some dogs as an interest in small, fast-moving animals. Mice, hamsters and guinea pigs should therefore be kept securely apart. Living with a cat or another dog depends on the individual, previous experience and the introduction; the breed name is no guarantee. Play with much larger dogs needs to be controlled, as a small, fine-boned dog can be injured even when both dogs are friendly.

## Training & Exercise

The English Toy Terrier needs physical exercise and mental activity every day, but a fixed number of minutes will not suit every dog. Age, health, weather, pace and what the dog is actually doing matter more than a generic time target. Combine daily walks and longer outings with scent work, play, simple searches, tricks and quiet downtime. An adult can often manage more activity than its size suggests, while a puppy needs shorter sessions, free movement and plenty of rest.

Reward-based, progressive training suits the breed's quick and attentive nature. Keep sessions short and clear. Give particular attention to engagement, recall, walking on a loose lead and turning away from moving distractions. Use an enclosed area or a long line until recall works even when the surroundings are tempting.

To prevent persistent barking at the door, teach the dog to go to a designated place away from the hall. Reward it for settling there, and ask visitors to wait before interacting until the dog is calm. The aim is not total silence, but a clear alternative to continued alarm barking.

Gently accustom the puppy from an early age to having its teeth and ears examined, its legs and paws touched and its body lifted safely. Training should be voluntary, positive and broken into small steps. This makes routine care, veterinary visits and being examined on a table at dog shows easier.

## Health

For the English Toy Terrier, it is important to distinguish between recommended health checks, tests that are relevant only to certain pedigrees and binding registration requirements. The Swedish breed-specific breeding strategy recommends eye testing and checks of the patellae and heart. The Swedish Kennel Club's 2026 registration rules, however, specify no mandatory breed-specific health test for the English Toy Terrier. A check can still be valuable even when it is not compulsory.

The Swedish health evidence is limited. The breeding strategy reports heart murmurs in a small survey and only modest numbers of dogs examined for eye and patellar conditions. These figures justify questions and checks, but they cannot establish how common a condition is across the breed. Ask to see dated results for both parents and enquire about diagnoses in siblings, parents and previous offspring.

The Swedish breeding strategy mentions three DNA tests for breeding dogs with American or Canadian dogs in their pedigrees: juvenile dilated cardiomyopathy (JDCM), xanthinuria and von Willebrand disease type 1. The current British health standard recommends JDCM, xanthinuria type II and eye testing for the breed, but does not list vWD1. This is a good reason to check the pedigree and the relevant national guidance before ordering a broad test panel without a clear purpose.

JDCM is a serious heart condition that can appear early in life. Xanthinuria type II can cause xanthine crystals in the urinary tract and kidney damage. Both are described as autosomal recessive: a dog with one altered copy is a carrier and is not expected to develop the condition, while two altered copies mean the dog is at risk of disease. A carrier need not automatically be excluded from breeding; the mating must be planned so that puppies do not inherit two altered copies, while genetic diversity is protected.

Before buying a puppy, ask for clear answers to the following questions:

- Which eye, patellar and heart checks have been carried out, when were they done and what were the results?
- Are there American or Canadian dogs in the pedigree, and which DNA tests are therefore relevant?
- What is known about the health and temperament of close relatives, not only the parents?
- How does the breeder avoid close matings and the overuse of individual breeding dogs?

## History & Origins

The English Toy Terrier is a British toy breed descended from the Black and Tan Terrier. During nineteenth-century urbanisation, small terriers were used to control rats, and bloody rat-killing contests also took place in public houses. This history helps to explain the breed's terrier character, but should not be romanticised.

In Britain, the breed was known by several names, including Miniature Black and Tan Terrier and Black and Tan Toy Terrier. The Kennel Club changed the name to English Toy Terrier (Black and Tan) in 1960. The first documented import to Sweden arrived from the United States in 1958.

North American Toy Manchester Terriers have since been used to broaden the small gene pool and may appear in Swedish and other Nordic pedigrees. That does not make the two breed standards identical. The Swedish breeding strategy notes differences including head shape and topline. For a prospective owner, the pedigree helps explain both the dog's background and which DNA tests may be relevant.

## Living with the Breed

The English Toy Terrier can do well in a flat if it gets outdoors, uses both body and mind, and learns to settle despite sounds in the building. The size of the home is no substitute for walks, and a garden does not replace daily activity either. If sound travels easily, begin early with calm behaviour around the door, lift and communal hallway.

Time alone must be introduced gradually. A young puppy should not be left alone, and adult dogs vary in what they can cope with. Start with very short periods when the dog is secure and settled, increase the time slowly and take a step back if it shows distress. Arrange help during working days rather than assuming that a small dog can be left for long periods.

The breed can live with children, but an adult should always be present with young children. The dog needs an undisturbed resting place, and children should not lift, carry or chase it. The same caution applies to boisterous play with larger dogs. The English Toy Terrier is fine-boned but not an ornament: it needs safe physical activity while the family prevents falls, crushing injuries and rough handling.

The breed is best suited to someone who values a small but active dog, can provide daily company and training, and is prepared to judge the individual rather than rely on stereotypes. A sound decision is based on meeting adult relatives, checking health records and having a routine that still works in cold weather or when the dog cannot come along.

The Cocker Spaniel is a British flushing and retrieving gundog that also makes an active companion. The breed tends to be cheerful, sociable and cooperative, but hunting drive, activity level and ability to settle vary between individuals and breeding lines. The most important choice is therefore not only the breed, but also the breeder and line that suit your daily life.

- **Size:** males are usually about 39–41 cm at the withers and females 38–39 cm. Weight is often around 13–15 kg.
- **Activity level:** high. The breed needs physical activity, scent work, training and time to wind down every day.
- **Coat care:** the coat needs to be combed and brushed through thoroughly every week. Trimming roughly every other month is a useful guide, but the need depends on the coat, lifestyle and how the coat is kept.
- **Life expectancy:** about 11–15 years is a broad guide, not a guarantee for an individual dog.
- **Best suited to:** an owner who wants to do things with their dog and has time for both training and regular coat care.

Some dogs are bred primarily for work in the field, while others are bred mainly with the breed standard and other traits in mind. The difference may be visible in working style, build and coat, but type alone does not determine what a dog will be like. Tell the breeder how you live, ask what the parents are used for and, if possible, meet adult relatives before choosing a puppy.

## Appearance & Coat

The Cocker Spaniel is a compact, robust and well-balanced dog with long, low-set ears and an alert expression. The coat should be flat and silky, with longer feathering on areas including the ears, chest, abdomen and legs. The breed comes in many recognised colours, both solid and in various particolour or roan combinations.

Height at the withers is about 39–41 cm for males and 38–39 cm for females. An adult dog often weighs around 13–15 kg. These measurements describe the breed’s typical build, but do not predict a puppy’s future activity level or whether a particular dog will suit your home.

Coat care is a real part of everyday life. Comb down to the skin at least once a week and pay particular attention to areas where tangles form easily, such as behind the ears, in the armpits and in the feathering on the legs and feet. Regular baths followed by thorough drying can make the coat easier to manage. Many dogs need help from a skilled groomer roughly every other month; a dog with a profuse show coat may require more work, while a shorter or more practical trim can be managed differently.

Check the ears, skin, nails and feet at the same time. An unpleasant smell, redness, discharge, itching or repeated head shaking are signs that need attention, not something to mask with a fixed cleaning routine. Ask the breeder or an experienced groomer to show you how to keep the hair around the feet and ears tidy without irritating the skin or ear canal.

## Temperament & Personality

A Cocker Spaniel should be friendly, affectionate, lively and inquisitive, and many enjoy working closely with their person. This makes the breed rewarding to train and easy to engage in shared activities. At the same time, a dog may act independently when a scent or movement becomes more interesting than its handler. Friendliness in the breed description is therefore a desired trait, not a promise that every dog will automatically cope with every setting.

The distinction between working-bred and more show-oriented Cockers matters, but should not be exaggerated. Working-bred dogs are bred with a clear focus on performance in the field. Dogs bred mainly towards the breed standard may still have clear hunting traits and substantial activity needs. If you intend to hunt with your dog, choose documented working lines. If you mainly want a companion, you should still expect an active dog and ask how the parents and adult relatives behave in everyday life.

BPH results can provide more information about dogs’ responses to people, play, surprises and different surfaces, for example. BPH is a Swedish behavioural description carried out in a set situation, not a test that a dog passes or fails, and it does not capture every trait needed for field work. Treat the result as one part of the picture alongside the breeder’s aims, the parents’ everyday behaviour and any hunting or working records.

Tracking, spaniel work, retrieving, nosework, obedience and agility are examples, but simple everyday exercises work too: finding an object, following a short trail or bringing in a toy on cue. A working-bred Cocker may need more purposeful work than an ordinary walk provides. A great deal of fast activity without planned recovery does not automatically produce a calm dog.

Start recall, handler focus and impulse control early. Begin where distractions are limited and increase the difficulty gradually; use a long line where hunting interest may take over. Reward-based, clear and brief training usually suits a quick, engaged Cocker better than harsh corrections or long, repetitive sessions. Also spend time teaching calm handling of ears, feet and coat so that recurring care is safe and comfortable for both dog and owner.

## Health

A Cocker Spaniel can live a long and active life, but health should be assessed through verifiable results, not simply through a breeder saying that the line is healthy. For a litter to be registered with the Swedish Kennel Club, both parents must have a recorded hip dysplasia (HD) status. Ask for the parents’ registered names or registration numbers and check their results in the Swedish Kennel Club’s Avelsdata or Hunddata databases.

The Cocker Spaniel Club of Sweden’s current puppy referral rules give buyers a practical Swedish checklist, but following the rules is voluntary. Results must be known before mating. Both parents must have a hip result of A, B or C; if one dog has a C result, the recommendation is for the parents’ average hip index at mating to be above 100. The eye examination certificate must be no more than two years old at mating, and at least one parent must be DNA-tested clear or hereditarily clear of familial nephropathy, FN. These are the breed club’s referral conditions, not a guarantee that a puppy will never become ill.

Do not ask only whether “all the tests have been done”. Ask to see the exact result, date and identity for both parents. FN and renal dysplasia, RD, are different kidney diseases, so an FN DNA result does not rule out every kidney problem. A prcd-PRA DNA test reports status for one particular inherited variant, while an eye examination can detect clinical changes and other eye diagnoses. The tests complement one another but do not answer the same question.

Long ears and profuse feathering make ear checks a practical routine. Keep the ears dry after bathing and swimming, and consult a vet if there is pain, smell, redness, discharge or recurring itching. Do not treat a dog yourself simply because the breed is often associated with ear problems.

## History & Origins

The Cocker Spaniel comes from Great Britain and was developed to flush and retrieve birds in close cooperation with the hunter. It was recognised as separate from the Field Spaniel and Springer Spaniel shortly after the Kennel Club was founded in 1873. The older name “cocking spaniel” is linked to its work with the woodcock.

Different breeding directions have become more distinct over time. Working-bred dogs have been selected for traits such as search pattern, speed, desire to work and responsiveness in the field, while other breeding places greater emphasis on the breed standard. Both belong to the same breed, but the distinction helps explain why two Cocker Spaniels may require quite different daily lives. The English Cocker Spaniel should not be confused with the American Cocker Spaniel, which is a separate breed.

## Living with the Breed

A Cocker Spaniel can live successfully in a family with children, a flat or a home with other animals, but none of these outcomes follows automatically from the breed name. The individual dog’s traits, early training and daily routines matter, as does the responsibility taken by the adults.

An adult must always supervise interactions with young children. Children need to learn not to disturb the dog when it is eating or resting, when it withdraws or when it shows that it wants to be left alone. The dog needs a safe resting place that the children respect. Meet the parents if possible and ask the breeder how they respond to handling, noises, visitors and children instead of accepting the label “family dog” as sufficient.

The breed can often live with other dogs, but a cat or smaller animal may trigger hunting interest. During introductions, allow the animals to become familiar with each other’s scent first and then meet under control, using distance, a barrier or a lead. The cat must always have a safe escape route, and the dog must not be allowed to practise chasing. Do not leave them alone together until their interactions are stable.

A flat is not a problem in itself if the dog receives enough outdoor activity and can settle indoors. In a building where sound carries, you will also need to prevent barking at noises or in anticipation of activity through calm routines and training around sounds in communal areas. A garden does not replace walks, scent work or shared training.

Time alone must be taught gradually. A young puppy cannot be left alone at first; begin with very short periods once the puppy feels secure and increase them only while it remains calm. There is no single duration that every Cocker Spaniel can manage. Arrange a dog sitter or another solution if daily life regularly requires more time alone than your particular dog handles well.

Before buying, check three things: which traits the breeder actually prioritises, how the parents and adult relatives behave, and which registered health results are available. When the line, activity needs and coat care suit the household, you have the best foundation for what the breed was developed to be — a cheerful dog that wants to work closely with its person.

The Dachshund is a German hunting dog in FCI Group 4, developed to work both below and above ground. The breed comes in nine varieties: standard, miniature and rabbit, each combined with a smooth-haired, long-haired or wire-haired coat. It is therefore wiser to choose a Dachshund by size, coat, the breeder's aims and the dogs' actual characteristics than by the breed name alone.

- **Uses:** hunting below ground, hunting by scent, tracking wounded game and companionship.
- **Working style:** persistent, independent and strongly scent-oriented.
- **Size:** determined by chest circumference, not height at the withers or a general weight figure.
- **Coat:** smooth, long or wire, with distinctly different care requirements.
- **Important health issue:** intervertebral disc degeneration and herniation, often grouped under the term IVDD.
- **Best suited to:** someone who wants a low-set hunting dog with a strong desire to work and can provide daily exercise, scent work and consistent training.

The final size variety is not confirmed until the dog is at least 15 months old. The parents provide a reasonable indication, but the puppy's final variety cannot be promised before measurement.

## Appearance & Coat

The Dachshund should be low and long-bodied, yet compact, muscular and agile. Its body was built to work freely in confined spaces, not to be extremely long or heavy. The breed standard specifies ground clearance of about one-third of the height at the withers and a ratio of height to body length of approximately 1:1.7–1.8.

Chest circumference is measured after 15 months of age, from the highest point of the withers to the lowest point of the ribcage. The current ranges are:

- **Standard Dachshund:** males more than 37 cm but no more than 47 cm; females more than 35 cm but no more than 45 cm.
- **Miniature Dachshund:** males more than 32 cm but no more than 37 cm; females more than 30 cm but no more than 35 cm.
- **Rabbit Dachshund:** males 27–32 cm; females 25–30 cm.

The three coat types are more than a difference in appearance. The smooth-haired Dachshund has a short, dense, close-lying coat that normally needs limited routine care but should still be checked after time in rough country. The long-haired Dachshund has an undercoat and longer feathering that should be combed where tangles form easily, particularly behind the ears and on the legs, belly and tail. The wire-haired Dachshund has a topcoat, undercoat, beard and pronounced eyebrows. A correct wire coat is hand-stripped when needed; clipping it does not produce the same coat texture.

Accepted colours and patterns depend partly on coat type. Red, black or brown with tan markings, merle (dapple) and brindle are included in the standard, while wild-boar colours are typical of wire coats. Coat colour is not a shortcut to temperament or hunting drive, but some colour combinations matter for health. Ask the breeder to explain both the registered colour and its inheritance if the puppy is merle.

## Temperament & Personality

The ideal Dachshund is friendly and even-tempered, without fear or aggression, but is also energetic, persistent and self-assured. Its independence comes from work in which the dog must make decisions at a distance from its handler. In daily life, the same trait may appear as a Dachshund checking whether a rule really applies every time.

Hunting drive, sociability, vocality, interest in play and ability to settle vary between individuals and family lines. The Swedish analysis of the Behaviour and Personality Assessment for Dogs, BPH, describes many confident Dachshunds but covers less than one per cent of the Swedish-born population studied. It cannot therefore promise the personality of an individual puppy. Claims that a particular coat type is always calmer, easier to train or less interested in hunting are also too broad.

Instead, ask how the parents and close relatives behave at home, with visitors, on walks and in unfamiliar settings. For a working Dachshund, trial results and practical use are relevant; for a companion, it is equally important to hear specific examples of how the dogs settle after activity, how vocal they are and how they respond to handling. A responsible breeder should be able to describe both strengths and areas that require work.

## Training & Exercise

A Dachshund needs daily physical activity and meaningful scent work, but one fixed number of minutes will not suit every dog. Age, fitness, surface, size variety, health and the way the dog works all affect the appropriate load. A healthy adult can be an enduring walking and outdoor companion, while a puppy should build strength and coordination gradually and a dog with back symptoms needs a veterinary plan.

Tracking, search games, human scent trails and carefully placed food searches allow the Dachshund to use its greatest asset: its nose. Short, clear sessions with a reward the dog genuinely values often work better than repetitions without a clear purpose. Start recall, stop cues, staying with the handler and disengaging from a scent trail early. Obedience does not remove hunting drive, so a long line and thoughtful choice of environment are important when recall is not reliable. In Sweden, dogs must not chase or pursue wildlife outside hunting, and particular supervision is required where wildlife may be present from 1 March to 20 August.

Protecting the back does not mean that a healthy Dachshund should live a sedentary life. There is no evidence that a total ban on all stairs or jumping on and off furniture prevents IVDD by itself. Instead, develop good basic fitness, keep the dog at a healthy body condition, reduce slipping hazards at home and avoid uncontrolled high jumps or collisions. Tailor help on stairs and when lifting to the dog's age, size and health.

## Health

Intervertebral disc degeneration and herniation are the Dachshund's most important breed-specific health issue. IVDD means that the discs between the vertebrae change and may press on nerves or the spinal cord. Seek veterinary care promptly if a Dachshund suddenly develops obvious back or neck pain, arches its back, refuses to move, walks unsteadily, loses strength in its legs or has difficulty controlling urination or defecation. Do not wait for mild neurological signs to resolve on their own.

The Swedish Kennel Club's official spinal X-ray screening for Dachshunds counts calcified discs. It is performed from the dog's second birthday until the day before its fourth birthday, and the result is reported as K0, K1–K2, K3–K4 or K5–K26. K0 means that no calcifications were detected, while a higher K number means more fully or partly calcified discs. The result provides breeding and risk information; it does not guarantee that a dog will never develop, or will definitely develop, clinical problems. Information about disc herniation in parents, siblings and previous offspring is therefore also important.

Spinal screening and eye examinations are voluntary for Dachshunds in Sweden. The Swedish Dachshund Club's breed-specific breeding strategy nevertheless recommends considering back and family history and having breeding dogs' eyes examined before first breeding and later in life. PRA occurs in the breed. The current registration provisions for Dachshunds regulate matters including variety, coat, colour and final size measurement, but do not list back or eye examinations as compulsory conditions for registration. A buyer should therefore ask for the actual results rather than accepting the phrase “health-tested parents”.

Monitor body condition too: a waist should be visible and the ribs should be easy to feel with light pressure. When merle is part of a mating, the breeder should be able to explain the colour genes. Inheriting merle from both parents can result in double merle, which in dogs is associated with an increased risk of hearing and eye problems.

## History & Origins

The Dachshund was developed in Germany from low-legged hunting dogs for work below ground. Such dogs have been known since the Middle Ages, while organised breeding took clearer shape during the nineteenth century. The German Dachshund club was founded in 1888, and breeding came to encompass the three sizes and three coats that make up today's nine varieties.

The breed's low outline, powerful forequarters, stamina and independence have a practical explanation. The Dachshund needed to follow quarry below ground, but could also work as a scent hound or flushing dog and assist in tracking wounded game. In Sweden, it became particularly important as a slow-working scent hound when the roe deer population increased during the 1940s. The Swedish Dachshund Club was founded as early as 1901.

That historical role is still apparent in daily life. A Dachshund that will never hunt still needs outlets for scent work, problem-solving and movement. This is also why a buyer should ask what the breeder genuinely prioritises: work below ground, scent hunting, tracking wounded game, showing or primarily companionship.

## Living with the Breed

A Dachshund can live well in a flat if it receives enough time outdoors, activity and training around sounds in the stairwell and outside the door. The size of the home matters less than the content of the dog's day. Plan several opportunities to go out, time to sniff at an unhurried pace and a place where the dog can rest undisturbed. Time alone should be taught gradually; stop and make the exercise easier if the dog shows distress. The Swedish Board of Agriculture's advice to take an adult dog out at least every six hours during the day concerns toileting and exercise, not how long an individual Dachshund should be left alone.

A Dachshund can be a good family dog with children, but young children and dogs should always have an adult present. Children need to learn not to disturb the dog while it is eating or resting. Young children should not carry a Dachshund; a small dog is easily dropped, and the back and hindquarters need proper support when it is lifted. The dog should always have a safe, undisturbed resting place.

Living with other dogs or cats depends on the individual, previous experience and hunting drive. Make introductions calmly, use a barrier and give both animals separate safe areas. A Dachshund with a strong drive to chase may not become reliable with a rabbit, guinea pig or cat simply because introductions are practised. Secure physical separation may be the right long-term solution.

Before buying, ask for specific answers to the following questions:

- Which size and coat is the puppy expected to have, and how confidently can this be predicted?
- What are the parents used for, and how do they and their close relatives behave in daily life?
- Is there an official K result and information about clinical back problems in parents, siblings or previous offspring?
- When were the parents' eyes last examined, and what do the results show?
- Which BPH, hunting or show results are registered and relevant to this particular litter?
- How have the puppies been introduced to handling, household sounds, people and short periods away from their littermates?

The best match is not automatically the smallest puppy, the quietest one during a visit or the colour that first catches your eye. Choose the combination in which the breeder's aims, the dogs' documented health and temperament, and your own daily life all point in the same direction.

- The breed standard gives 66 cm and 29.5 kg for males, and 62 cm and 25.5 kg for females.
- The coat should be moderately long and as flat as possible. Its colour is glossy coal black with chestnut-red tan markings.
- The Gordon Setter should be intelligent, dignified, bold, outgoing and kind, with an even temperament.
- The breed needs substantial daily exercise, scent work, training and opportunities to use its search instincts. One fixed number of hours does not describe every individual.
- A strong interest in hunting should be expected. The breeder's priorities and the working style of adult relatives matter when choosing a puppy.
- In Swedish breeding, both parents must have an official hip dysplasia result. Results for rcd4-PRA, CCA and CL can also be recorded centrally.

The breed is best suited to an owner who wants to spend a large part of their free time in woodland, fields or open upland country and sees training as a regular part of everyday life. It is less suitable if the aim is a dog content with short walks around the block or one expected to ignore game scent and the urge to search.

## Appearance & Coat

The Gordon Setter should be stylish, symmetrical and built for galloping. It is strong without being cumbersome, with a deep chest, strong limbs and free, flowing movement. The standard uses fixed reference measurements: 66 cm and 29.5 kg for males, and 62 cm and 25.5 kg for females. These are ideal measurements, not a promise that every adult will match them exactly. Body condition, proportions and movement matter more than one number.

The coat is short and fine on the head, fronts of the legs and tips of the ears. On the body, it should be moderately long, flat and as free as possible from curl or wave. Long, silky feathering is found on the ears, legs, belly and tail. A functional coat should offer protection in cover without becoming excessively heavy or difficult to maintain.

The base colour is a deep, glossy coal black without rusty tones, with clearly defined chestnut-red tan markings. These appear above the eyes, on the muzzle, throat, chest and legs, and beneath the tail. A very small white spot on the chest is permitted; other colours are outside the standard.

Coat care is best guided by the dog's routine. Brush through the feathering and the areas behind the ears, in the armpits and around the thighs before small tangles become mats. After work in woodland or long grass, check for seeds, burrs, ticks, small wounds and cracks in the pads. Bathe when the dog is dirty and check the drop ears after swimming or wet weather. Light tidying may produce a neat outline, but the coat should not be shaped in a way that conceals its natural function.

## Temperament & Personality

The standard describes the Gordon Setter as intelligent, capable and dignified, with courage, an outgoing nature and a kind, even temperament. This is the breed ideal, not a promise that every individual will be identical. Breeding priorities, family lines, early experience and the home environment influence confidence, intensity, sociability and the ability to settle.

Its work requires the dog to take initiative while cooperating at considerable distance. At home, the same traits may appear as quick problem-solving, great stamina and a tendency to investigate before looking to its owner. Independence is not the same as low intelligence or deliberate defiance. Training needs to give the dog a clear task and make cooperation worthwhile.

Gordon Setters often mature later than new owners expect. The Swedish Kennel Club notes that a male may not be fully grown until three to four years of age. This is a guide to physical maturity, not an excuse to postpone everyday boundaries for several years. A large adolescent dog needs to learn calm greetings, rest, lead manners and comfortable handling from an early age.

Before choosing a puppy, meet the mother and, if possible, other adult relatives. Ask how they recover after surprises, respond to unfamiliar people, cope with inactivity and work in the field or in trials. Ask the breeder to explain their breeding aims in practical terms. Labels such as “working line” or “show line” reveal less than the parents' actual achievements, working style, health and everyday behaviour.

## Training & Exercise

A Gordon Setter needs a great deal of physical and mental activity, but one fixed daily time target is too blunt. A good day includes movement over varied ground, opportunities to search and use scent, cooperative exercises, practical skills training and recovery. Needs vary with age, fitness, the hunting season, health and the difficulty of the activity.

As a pointing dog, it should quarter the ground, point when it scents game, wait for the handler, flush the bird on cue, remain steady to shot and retrieve on command. Even a non-hunting owner needs to understand this sequence. Ordinary walks do not automatically provide the same outlet as controlled search, tracking, retrieving or other work in which the dog can act independently within clear boundaries.

Recall must be developed progressively around genuine distractions. Begin close by, reward voluntary check-ins and use a long line or securely enclosed ground when hunting drive may take over. Avoid repeatedly calling when the dog is already completely absorbed by game scent. Make the exercise easier, increase the distance from the distraction and build many successful repetitions. No breed description or training method can promise that an individual Gordon Setter will be safe off lead everywhere.

Reward-based training suits a dog that is sensitive to the handler's actions yet accustomed to making its own decisions. Prioritise recall, a stop or steadiness cue, loose-lead walking, settling, calm greetings and safe retrieving. Training with an experienced pointing-dog instructor is valuable even if you have not yet decided whether to enter working trials.

Puppies should be allowed to play, explore and move freely without long forced runs or repeated high jumps. Increase distance, speed and difficulty as strength and recovery improve. Exercise is not successful merely because the dog is tired; it should also eat normally, move cleanly and be able to settle afterwards.

## Health

The most useful health information before purchase is official hip status, correctly interpreted DNA results, known disease history in close relatives and recognition of the emergency signs of gastric dilatation-volvulus. A long list of possible diagnoses is less helpful if it does not show which result belongs to which dog.

The Gordon Setter is covered by a Swedish health programme for hip dysplasia. Under the 2026 registration rules, both parents must have an official hip result before mating for their puppies to be registered. The rules prohibit breeding from a dog graded E; a dog graded D may only be mated to a hip-clear dog, A or B, and a dog with clinical signs of hip dysplasia should not be bred from. Hip dysplasia is influenced by several genes, so the parents' grades do not describe the entire risk. Results from siblings and other close relatives add useful information.

The Swedish Kennel Club centrally records DNA results for rcd4-PRA, cerebellar cortical abiotrophy (CCA) and ceroid lipofuscinosis (CL) in Gordon Setters. All three are recessively inherited. A carrier has one copy of the disease variant and will not become ill from that specific tested condition, but can pass it on. A carrier should therefore be mated to a genetically or hereditarily clear dog, never another carrier. Check the dog's identity, the exact test name and whether the result comes from the dog's own DNA test or from ancestry.

The rcd4-PRA test identifies risk from that specific genetic variant. It does not replace a clinical eye examination or exclude other forms of PRA. CCA affects the cerebellum and can cause progressive unsteadiness in young dogs. CL is a different neurological disorder that may cause changes in behaviour, an unsteady gait, impaired vision or seizures. A clear result for one condition says nothing about the other two. Current Swedish Gordon Setter Club puppy advertisements require at least one parent to be DNA-tested or hereditarily clear for rcd4-PRA and CCA; this is a club advertising condition, not the same as the binding hip requirement in the registration rules.

The breed is also documented as predisposed to symmetrical claw loss, often called SLO. If several claws fall off, split or grow back misshapen, the dog needs veterinary assessment. Ask about recurring claw-capsule problems in parents and close relatives without treating the absence of a DNA test as proof of health.

The Gordon Setter is classed among breeds at increased risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV. The condition can progress rapidly and requires emergency treatment. If the dog tries to vomit without bringing anything up, becomes markedly restless, has a swollen or painful abdomen, salivates heavily, has pale gums, becomes weak or collapses, contact a vet immediately. Ask about GDV in parents and siblings. Feeding and exercise routines may reduce some risk factors, but cannot guarantee that the condition will never occur.

A 2024 British study estimated a median life expectancy of 12.4 years in a group of 393 Gordon Setters. This is a population measure, not a forecast for an individual dog.

## History & Origins

The Gordon Setter takes its name from Gordon Castle in Scotland. Black setters with tan markings are documented there from the early years of the nineteenth century, and the dogs were valued for hunting drive, trainability and a friendly disposition. The aim was an efficient bird dog with a strong build that could work for long periods over demanding ground.

Setters previously appeared in many colours and types. When they began to be separated into breeds during the nineteenth century, the black variety with rust-red markings was called the Black and Tan Setter. The British Kennel Club recognised it under that name in 1873. In 1924, the breed name was changed to Gordon Setter, reflecting its connection with the fourth Duke of Gordon and the castle's well-known dogs.

The core of the breed remains the work of a pointing dog. It searches the ground, indicates game by standing still and then cooperates with the hunter during the flush and retrieve. The FCI places it in group 7 and includes a working trial in the breed's international classification.

Older accounts mention possible crosses with Collies, Bloodhounds and other types of dog. The evidence is uncertain and those theories are not needed to explain the documented development. The established points are the connection with British setters, Gordon Castle, the Black and Tan Setter name and the change of name in 1924.

Gordon Setters arrived early in the Nordic countries, and the Swedish breed club was founded in 1907. The modern Swedish population has been shaped largely by hunting use and Nordic cooperation. This history has a practical consequence for a prospective owner: the breed's appearance cannot be separated from the function for which it is still bred.

## Living with the Breed

Living with a Gordon Setter means arranging everyday life around a large, enduring hunting dog. A house and garden do not replace activity, and a flat does not automatically rule the breed out if the dog receives appropriate work, outdoor time and rest. The key question is whether the owner can provide safe opportunities to search, varied training and a sustainable routine even on dark, wet working days.

Young children and dogs should always have an adult present. A Gordon Setter's size, tail and enthusiasm can knock a child over without any aggression. Children should not disturb the dog while it eats or rests, and the dog needs a protected place of its own. Assess the individual dog's behaviour rather than relying on a general claim that the breed is good with children.

Living with other dogs can work well, but the introduction and the individuals' behaviour matter more than the breed name. Cats and small animals require extra planning because fast movement may trigger hunting interest. Begin at a distance, with the dog on lead, and keep meetings short and controlled. A cat should have high, dog-free places and separate resources. A dog that lives peacefully with the household cat may still chase an unfamiliar cat outdoors.

Alone time should be taught gradually once the dog feels secure. Begin with very short periods behind a door or outside the home, and extend them only when the dog can rest. A camera can reveal pacing, vocalising or destructive behaviour that is not obvious when you return. The Swedish Board of Agriculture's guidance that dogs should be taken out at least every six hours during the day is not a measure of how long an individual dog is comfortable alone.

Before buying, check:

- the breeder's working and conformation aims, and what they mean in practice,
- the parents' working-trial record, working style, temperament and ability to settle,
- official hip results and results from close relatives,
- the exact rcd4-PRA, CCA and CL results and how any carrier has been mated,
- any history of claw loss and GDV in the family,
- how the puppies are prepared for recall, settling, handling, gunshot and varied environments.

The central question is not whether a Gordon Setter can be a family dog, but whether the family wants to live with and develop a pointing dog for many years.

- **Grooming:** demanding when kept in full coat; a shorter trim reduces the work but does not make the coat maintenance-free
- **Lifespan:** a large British study estimated a median lifespan of 14 years, although an individual dog may have a shorter or longer life

The breed standard does not specify an official weight. Rather than judging an adult Lhasa Apso against a supposedly ‘correct’ figure, monitor its body condition, muscle tone and development with the breeder and your vet.

## Appearance & Coat

A Lhasa Apso should be a sturdily built small dog without exaggeration. The body is slightly rectangular, movement should be free and the coat must never prevent the dog from seeing or moving. The ideal height for a male is 25 cm and a female should be slightly shorter; this is an ideal in the breed standard, not a range into which every dog must fit precisely.

The head has a moderately defined stop and a straight muzzle measuring about one third of the head’s total length. The eyes should be dark, oval and medium-sized, neither large and prominent nor small and sunken. The tail is set high, well feathered and carried over the back.

The topcoat should be long, heavy, straight and fairly hard, rather than woolly or silky. The undercoat should be moderate. Golden, sandy, honey, dark grizzle, slate grey, smoke, black, white, brownish and parti-colour are among the colours listed in the standard, and all are considered equal.

A full coat involves a great deal of work, including bathing, drying, brushing and combing. Ask the breeder to demonstrate how to part the coat and comb right down to the skin, especially in areas where mats can remain hidden. The frequency depends on coat texture, length, life stage and the dog’s daily routine; one fixed timetable will not suit every dog. A shorter trim makes grooming easier, but the coat must still be kept clean and free of mats, and the ears, eyes, paws and nails still need checking.

Gently teach the puppy to stand still, have its paws examined and accept a comb for short periods. This matters more than owning an elaborate collection of grooming tools. The Lhasa Apso should not be described as allergy-free or guaranteed to be suitable for people with allergies. The amount of dog allergen varies considerably even among individuals of the same breed, so anyone with an allergy should take medical advice seriously before buying a dog.

The Lhasa Apso should be cheerful, assertive, alert and steady. A degree of reserve with new people is typical of the breed, but should not be confused with fear or aggression. Some dogs approach readily, while others prefer to watch a visitor for a while before coming closer.

The breed has historically been valued for its watchfulness, and many individuals bark at unfamiliar sounds. This matters in a flat with poor sound insulation, but how readily a dog becomes excited depends on the individual, its surroundings and what it has learnt. Start early with training around the doorbell, sounds in communal areas and settling again afterwards. A prospective owner should meet the puppy’s mother and, if possible, other adult relatives to see how they cope with people, noise and unfamiliar settings.

No one can promise that a Lhasa Apso will automatically get on with children, cats or other dogs. Previous experience, introductions and the individual dog’s behaviour matter more than its breed name. Young children and dogs should always be supervised by an adult, and the dog needs a safe resting place where it will be left alone. Teach children not to pick up the dog, pull its coat or disturb it while it is eating or sleeping.

## Training & Exercise

The Lhasa Apso needs daily exercise and mental stimulation, but its needs cannot be reduced to a fixed number of minutes. Adjust walks, pace and terrain to the dog’s age, health, fitness and the weather. A good daily routine includes walks with time to sniff, play, short training sessions and the opportunity to rest undisturbed.

The breed is small but can be active and capable of learning a great deal. Some Lhasa Apsos take part successfully in activities such as rally obedience and agility. That does not mean every dog should be trained in the same way. For a young dog, calm exposure to different environments, lead skills, recall and relaxed handling matter more than increasing physical strain too quickly.

Use reward-based, progressive training with clear criteria. Short sessions make it easier to finish while the dog is still engaged. Reward voluntary attention, calm behaviour at the door and cooperation during grooming. If the dog loses focus, make the task easier or change the reward instead of turning training into a battle of wills. Independence does not make the breed impossible to train.

## Health

The Swedish Kennel Club describes the Lhasa Apso as generally healthy and long-lived, but a responsible purchase still requires specific health questions. In a large British registry study published in 2024, the estimated median lifespan was 14.0 years among 7,216 dogs of the breed. This figure describes the dogs in that British study and is not a promise for an individual puppy.

The principal breed-specific health programme in Sweden concerns PRA4, a genetic form of progressive retinal atrophy that can cause deteriorating night vision and eventually blindness. The Swedish Kennel Club records the DNA results so that they can be checked. It is a level 1 programme and does not make DNA testing compulsory before breeding. A dog that has inherited the variant from both parents is classed as genetically affected and must not be bred from. Two carriers must not be mated to one another either. A carrier may, however, be mated to a genetically clear dog without producing puppies genetically affected by this particular PRA4 variant.

A PRA4 test is not a substitute for a clinical eye examination, because other eye changes and other forms of PRA can occur. The breed club recommends an eye examination before the first mating and, preferably, again at six and nine years of age, but eye testing is no longer a registration requirement. Ask the breeder to show you the parents’ recorded PRA4 results and current eye examination results, and to explain how the proposed pairing was assessed.

The breed’s breeding strategy also discusses historical cases of renal dysplasia. This is a developmental abnormality of the kidney tissue that arises in the foetus or newborn puppy and can cause serious kidney disease. There is no simple routine test that can declare a litter unaffected. Ask about confirmed cases in close relatives and how the breeder has taken the family history into account. The Swedish Kennel Club records cases in every breed when the diagnosis has been confirmed by examination of kidney tissue.

Look at function as well as awards and coat. A sound Lhasa Apso should be able to breathe freely, have clear eyes without irritation, see despite the hair on its head and move without restriction. Repeated eye irritation, laboured breathing or a coat that restricts movement should not be dismissed as normal for the breed.

## History & Origins

The breed standard lists Tibet as the country of origin and Great Britain as the country of patronage. The modern development and standardisation of the breed took place in Great Britain. The breed developed to withstand a harsh high-altitude climate, which is reflected in its substantial coat and sturdy construction.

The first dogs of the breed arrived in Great Britain in the early 1920s. They were initially confused with other long-coated Tibetan dogs under the name Lhasa Terrier, before the Lhasa Apso and Tibetan Terrier, among others, were separated. The English breed club was established in 1933, and the breed reached Sweden in 1965.

Stories about monasteries, sacred dogs and diplomatic gifts are often retold as one continuous, detailed history. Some elements belong to tradition rather than verifiable documentation. What is well established is the breed’s Tibetan origin and its British standardisation during the twentieth century.

## Living with the Breed

The Lhasa Apso can live successfully in either a flat or a house when its owner takes responsibility for training around everyday sounds, exercise, coat care and time alone. Its small size does not reduce its need for walks, training or a quiet place to rest.

Being left alone is a training issue, not an inborn breed advantage. A young puppy cannot be left alone, and training should begin with very short, secure periods. An adult dog that has been trained gradually can usually remain alone for a few hours, but reduce the duration if the dog barks, paces, destroys things or shows other signs of distress. Arrange help if your routine requires longer absences than the dog can manage.

Before buying, you should be able to get clear answers to the following questions:

- What are the parents’ recorded PRA4 results, and why is the pairing safe?
- When were the parents last examined by an eye specialist, and were any findings recorded?
- Have there been confirmed cases of renal dysplasia or other serious disease in close relatives?
- How do the parent dogs respond to strangers, other dogs, noise and handling?
- How is the coat managed in practice, and how much work does a full coat require compared with a short trim?
- Can the dogs breathe, see and move freely without their coat or head shape restricting them?

The breed suits someone who wants to share life with a small but self-assured dog and considers grooming and everyday training part of dog ownership. It is less suitable for anyone seeking a maintenance-free coat, guaranteed silence or a dog expected to accept every person and animal without thoughtful introductions.

A prospective puppy buyer should therefore ask about both parents’ size and how the breeder handles variety registration.

## Appearance & Coat

The Kleinspitz should be compact and almost square, with a pointed muzzle, small upright ears and a high-set tail carried over the back. The abundant coat forms a distinct ruff around the neck and feathering on the hind legs. Beneath the coat, the body should remain well proportioned and movement should be flowing and springy.

The breed’s ideal height is 27 cm, and the permitted range is 24–30 cm. Rather than stipulating a set number of kilograms, the breed standard links weight to the dog’s size. Assess body condition by touch and with a vet when necessary; a full coat can conceal excess weight and can also make a slender dog look heavier than it is.

Accepted colours include white, black, brown, orange and wolf sable, as well as several clearly defined colour varieties, including cream, orange sable, black and tan, and parti-colour with a white ground. Merle is not included in the breed standard. Colour is a matter of appearance and should never take priority over health, temperament and a carefully considered mating.

The coat consists of a straight, harsher outer coat and a short, thick, cotton-like undercoat. Brush or comb right through to the skin about once a week and more often during shedding periods. Pay particular attention behind the ears, in the armpits and beneath a harness or collar. The coat should not routinely be shaped by extensive trimming. Bathe the dog when it is dirty rather than following a fixed timetable.

## Temperament & Personality

The Kleinspitz is usually lively, attentive and strongly oriented towards its people, but it is not automatically sociable with everyone it meets. The breed standard describes a dog with a natural wariness of strangers, without fearfulness or aggression. In everyday life, this may mean that the dog prefers to observe a visitor before seeking contact.

A tendency to bark is an important part of the breed decision. A Kleinspitz often reacts quickly to sounds, movement in a shared stairwell or someone arriving at the door. The goal need not be a completely silent dog, but one that can alert and then settle again. Reward calm behaviour, create distance from recurring triggers and avoid inadvertently reinforcing every alarm by rushing to the window with the dog.

BPH, a standardised behavioural assessment, still has only a small Kleinspitz sample whose owners chose to participate. On average, the group appeared relatively confident and showed few threatening or aggressive reactions, but it was not markedly sociable with strangers either. These findings describe the participating dogs, not every individual. The parents’ behaviour, early experiences and the breeder’s environment offer better guidance about an individual puppy than the breed name alone.

The breed is often described as having little hunting drive, but this is not a guarantee of reliable recall. Curiosity and excitement may still prompt a Kleinspitz to chase birds, wildlife or bicycles. Train recall in gradual stages and use a long line where the surroundings require it.

## Training & Exercise

The Kleinspitz needs daily physical activity and mental engagement, but exercise should be adapted to the individual dog’s age, health and experience rather than a universal number of minutes. Several walks, opportunities to sniff and short problem-solving sessions will often suit it better than one long, monotonous outing.

The breed is quick and trainable, which makes reward-based training effective but also exposes unclear rules. Work in small steps and reward the behaviour you want: four paws on the floor when greeting, attention before a door opens and quiet after an alert. Harsh corrections risk causing fear or more noise and have no place in modern dog training.

Scent work, tricks, balance exercises and everyday obedience can provide useful variety. A healthy adult Kleinspitz may also enjoy longer walks, but fitness should be built gradually. Puppies should be able to move freely in varied ways without forced distances or repetitive jumping. Its small body does not make the dog a fragile ornament, but it does need protection from falls, rough play and exertion for which it is not ready.

Accustom the dog early to brushing, tooth brushing, nail trimming and being examined. Short, positive handling sessions make recurring care easier and improve the chance of noticing changes in the skin, eyes, mouth or movement.

## Health

The Kleinspitz is generally regarded as a relatively healthy small breed, but a considered purchase requires more than a broad claim about healthy lines. Ask to see the official results for both parents and which problems have actually occurred among close relatives.

The Swedish breed club recommends that breeding dogs have normal kneecaps and eyes without recorded abnormalities. Patellar findings are recorded on a scale from 0 to 3, so the actual result must be considered; saying that a dog has been “patella checked” does not reveal what the examination found. An official eye examination must be carried out by an authorised veterinary ophthalmologist and provides a current picture of the dog’s eye status, not a lifelong guarantee.

Recommendations for knee and eye examinations should not be confused with a central health scheme or a separate registration requirement for the Kleinspitz. What matters to a puppy buyer is the actual results, the date of the examinations and how the breeder uses them in breeding decisions.

Be cautious about broad claims concerning DNA tests for PRA. A test that identifies a particular gene variant in another breed does not rule out every form of progressive retinal atrophy in the Kleinspitz. Eye examinations, family history and transparent reporting of findings therefore cannot be replaced by a vague statement that the dogs have been “DNA tested”.

Abnormal coat loss appears in descriptions of small German Spitz, but terms such as BSD or “black skin disease” are used as informal umbrella labels rather than a single confirmed diagnosis. A dog with abnormal hair loss needs veterinary investigation rather than a diagnosis based on its breed or appearance.

As with other dogs, weight management and dental care form part of preventive care. Introduce tooth brushing early and make it a calm daily routine.

The modern breed origin of the German Spitz – Kleinspitz is in Germany, and it belongs to the FCI group for Spitz and primitive types. The FCI places the five German Spitz varieties under the same breed standard: Wolfspitz/Keeshond, Giant Spitz, Medium Spitz, Miniature Spitz and Pomeranian.

The German Spitz has historically been described as a watchdog and companion. The international breed standard received definitive recognition in 1957, although its wording and size rules have since been revised. Older accounts link German Spitz to very early European dog types, but these origin stories should be read as cynological tradition rather than proven ancestry for today’s Kleinspitz.

The shared standard explains why the boundaries between varieties still have practical importance in breeding and registration. A Kleinspitz is therefore not merely “a small Spitz” in an everyday sense, but the size variety that should fall within the measurements and overall appearance set out in the breed standard.

## Living with the Breed

The Kleinspitz can live successfully in either a flat or a house if it receives activity, rest and help managing sounds. The size of the home matters less than the way daily life is organised. In a flat with poor sound insulation, however, a prospective owner should take the breed’s quick alarm response seriously and plan calmness training from the outset.

With children, the breed can become an engaged family dog, but adults must always take responsibility for the interaction. The dog needs an undisturbed resting place, and children must learn not to disturb it while it is eating or sleeping. Because the Kleinspitz is small, extra care is needed when lifting it and during lively play. No dog, regardless of breed, should be left alone with young children.

Compatibility with a cat or another dog depends more on the individuals and the introduction than on the breed name. Initial meetings should be calm and gradual, with opportunities for distance and separate resources. Previous experience of the other species is helpful but does not guarantee that every combination will work.

Time alone needs to be introduced gradually once the dog feels secure in its new home. A young puppy cannot be left alone, and adult dogs vary greatly in what they can cope with without stress. Increase the duration in small steps and reduce it again if the dog begins to bark persistently, pace, destroy things or show other signs of distress.

The Kleinspitz is therefore best suited to someone who wants a small but active dog, can live with regular coat care and is prepared to work on noise, social confidence and everyday skills. It is a poorer choice for someone seeking a quiet, independent dog that is satisfied with brief toilet walks and can be left alone for long working days.

The Brittany (Breton) is the smallest of the pointing breeds, but works as a full-sized gundog. The breed comes from France, has FCI number 95 and belongs to group 7. In Sweden, it is used chiefly to hunt game birds lying tight in cover and to retrieve on land and from water.

- Dogs should stand 48–51 centimetres at the withers and bitches 47–50 centimetres. The standard permits a deviation of 1 centimetre beyond these limits but gives no weight.
- The Brittany (Breton) needs to quarter, use its nose, run freely and work with its handler. The Swedish Kennel Club expressly says that anyone who does not intend to hunt would probably be better served by another breed.
- The breed standard describes the Brittany (Breton) as balanced and sociable. The Swedish Kennel Club highlights energy, intelligence, willingness to cooperate and low aggression, but every dog must still be assessed as an individual.
- Both parents must have an official recorded hip dysplasia result for a litter to be registered in Sweden. The breed club's good-breeding guidelines are stricter than the minimum rules.
- Lumbosacral transitional vertebra, LTV, is not covered by a mandatory Swedish health programme for the breed. The breed club nevertheless encourages voluntary spinal screening alongside hip screening.

The decisive question is not how many minutes of exercise you can provide, but whether you can offer suitable work, safe off-lead movement, training and recovery over many years.

## Appearance & Coat

The Brittany (Breton) should be compact, square and strong without appearing heavy or coarse. Body length should equal height at the withers. Solid bone, a short back and well-muscled legs enable the dog to work at a gallop across fields, mountains and woodland. Movement should be easy, powerful and lively.

Ideal height is 49–50 centimetres for dogs and 48–49 centimetres for bitches. The standard gives no weight. Figures in breed guides are therefore only estimates and should not be used to force a dog towards a particular number on the scales. Assess body condition, muscle, structure and working ability instead.

The coat should be fine but not silky. It lies flat or is slightly wavy and must never be curly. There is feathering on the backs of the legs. Permitted colours are white with irregular orange, liver or black patches. Pied and roan coats, ticking and tan markings occur, while a solid-coloured coat is not permitted.

The tail may be long, naturally short or absent. Most Brittanys in Sweden have a long tail. The standard's 3–6 centimetres and maximum of 10 centimetres refer to a docked tail, not a natural one; docking is prohibited in Sweden. At registration, the dog is recorded as tailless or as having a bobtail, short tail, full-length tail or a tail that was legally docked abroad.

Coat care should follow the dog's daily life. Brush out loose hair and tangles, bathe when the coat is dirty, and check paws, skin, ears and feathering after work in cover. Dry the dog after water retrieves. Do not use an ear cleaner unless there is a need or your vet advises it.

## Temperament & Personality

The Brittany (Breton) should be balanced, sociable, attentive and willing to cooperate. Contact with the handler is a working trait: the dog must hunt independently while remaining in touch and responsive at a distance. That is more informative than simply calling the breed cuddly, sensitive or easy to train.

The Swedish breeding strategy calls for more dogs to be assessed through BPH or MH. There is therefore no support for the detailed Swedish BPH profiles sometimes presented in search results. Meet the parents and mature relatives instead. Watch how they recover after surprises, cope with noise and unfamiliar surroundings, greet people and dogs, and switch from work to rest.

High energy can lead to unruly behaviour when the dog does not understand what is expected. Simply trying to tire it out is not enough. Practise waiting calmly, handling, undisturbed sleep and settling between activities. Clear reward-based training builds cooperation without suppressing the dog's initiative in the field.

Life with children requires adult supervision, clear rules and a place where the dog can be left in peace. A lively youngster may knock over a small child despite being friendly. Cats may be compatible after a slow, controlled introduction, but a bird dog's hunting instinct makes outdoor behaviour less predictable. Birds, rabbits and small rodents must be capable of being kept physically separate. With other dogs, too, the individual, its experience and play style matter more than a general description of low aggression.

## Training & Exercise

The Brittany (Breton) needs gundog training and off-lead movement on suitable ground, not merely walks or a prescribed number of exercise hours. The Swedish Kennel Club's advice is clear: if hunting is not part of the plan, there are probably better breed choices. Dog sports, running and scent work are valuable additions, but do not automatically turn the breed into a purely companion dog.

During a hunt, the dog quarters for birds and adjusts to wind and terrain. On finding scent, it should hold a firm point. On command, it moves forward and flushes the bird, then must remain steady so that a safe shot can be taken. It should subsequently find, retrieve and deliver the bird, including from water. Quartering, stop, retrieve and cooperation are therefore trained as parts of the same job.

Build recall and a stop cue from an easy environment towards longer distances and harder distractions. Use a long line or enclosed ground to prevent the dog from pursuing wildlife. Cues reduce the risk but do not remove hunting instinct; near traffic, livestock and wildlife, a lead may be the only safe option.

No authoritative source provides a universal formula in minutes. Consider instead whether the dog uses its nose and body, can run safely, recovers well and settles at home. Develop a puppy's fitness, body awareness and stamina gradually. Adapt longer runs, pulling work and other repetitive exercise to age, health and training history.

Keep the dog physically and mentally fit before the season rather than trying to condition it rapidly when hunting begins. After a demanding day it needs water, food and sleep, as well as checks of its paws, skin, claws and movement.

## Health

The Brittany (Breton) is covered by a mandatory Swedish hip dysplasia, or HD, programme. Under the Swedish Kennel Club's registration rules for 2026, both parents must have a known official HD result before mating. A dog graded HD E must not be used for breeding. Under the general rule, a dog graded D may only be mated to a dog graded A or B, and a dog with clinical signs must not be bred from regardless of its radiographic result.

The Swedish Brittany club's rules for puppy advertisements are stricter: both parents must be graded HD A or B, and the litter's estimated HD index must be at least 100 when an index is available. The club also requires field-trial and show results. These club requirements are not the same as the Swedish Kennel Club's registration rules.

HD is complex. Two dogs with A or B hips can still produce offspring with dysplasia. Ask about the parents' results, the litter's index and hip results in siblings, previous offspring and older relatives. Official HD radiographs can be taken from 12 months of age.

LTV is a congenital change at the junction of the lumbar spine and sacrum. A Norwegian study of HD radiographs from 14 breeds included 835 Brittanys and found LTV in 46.2 per cent of the sample. Types 2 and 3 were statistically associated with mild and severe HD. That figure is neither the Swedish prevalence nor an individual dog's risk of illness.

Sweden has no mandatory LTV programme for the Brittany (Breton), and the prevalence and clinical significance in the country are uncertain. The breed club encourages voluntary spinal radiographs alongside HD screening. Ask which relatives have been examined, how the images were assessed and how the results influenced the mating.

Eyes and epilepsy also call for specific but measured questions. The Swedish Kennel Club does not require an eye examination for registration, but the breed club's advertising rules exclude parents with certain confirmed forms of inherited cataract. Ask to see any eye certificates. The Swedish breeding strategy says the number of reliably diagnosed cases of idiopathic epilepsy is unknown and probably very small; a diagnosed dog must not be used for breeding. Ask about confirmed seizures and diagnoses in the family rather than accepting a vague assurance that the line is “healthy”.

The Brittany (Breton) was developed in Brittany in north-western France during the 1800s through crosses between setter-type dogs and local spaniel types. The first standard was established by the French breed club in 1908. Those facts are well documented; more detailed stories about named foundation dogs, a precise date or individual British shooting parties require their own evidence and are not central to the breed's history.

The breed was shaped as a compact pointing dog capable of finding game, pointing, advancing on command and retrieving. Its hunting function is therefore not a historical extra but the basis of both its structure and temperament.

The Brittany (Breton) reached Sweden via Norway. The first Norwegian dogs were imported from the United States in 1954, and the first dog arrived in Sweden in 1958. Today, its Swedish field work and breeding are overseen within the specialist club for Continental pointing dogs and the Swedish Brittany club.

## Living with the Breed

A Brittany (Breton) can live in a flat if its routine meets the needs of a working bird dog. The size of the home cannot replace suitable ground, safe off-lead movement, gundog training and recovery. Long working days away from home require a sustainable arrangement for exercise, company and supervision.

Time alone should be taught gradually, not judged against a supposed breed limit expressed as a number of hours. Begin when the dog has been out and is calm, leave for a short time, and extend it only when the dog genuinely settles. A camera can reveal pacing, barking, howling, destructive behaviour or an inability to take food. If the dog shows clear distress, reduce the difficulty and seek professional help if needed.

After work, check for wounds, grass seeds, ticks, cracked pads, damaged claws and tenderness. Dry a wet dog, examine its ears and watch for any change in movement after rest. This is more useful than following a fixed timetable for bathing and ear cleaning.

Before buying a puppy, the breeder should be able to answer the following questions clearly:

- How are the parents used in practical shooting, and what do their field-trial results show about quartering, pointing, cooperation and retrieving?
- What are the parents' official HD results, what is the litter's index, and what hip results are recorded for close relatives?
- Have spinal radiographs for LTV or eye examinations been carried out, and what do the results and their limitations mean?
- Is there confirmed epilepsy, cataract, spinal disease or a pattern of recurring injury in the family?
- How do the parents react to noise, surprises, unfamiliar people and dogs, and how quickly do they recover?
- How have the puppies experienced people, surfaces, sounds, rest and handling, and how have they been introduced safely to the first elements of field work and home life?

Choose a Brittany (Breton) if you want to work with a pointing dog, have access to the right environment and value training that combines a wide-ranging search with reliable handler contact. This gives the breed's energy, intelligence and willingness to cooperate a clear purpose.

## Appearance & Coat

The Tibetan Spaniel is small but should look balanced and agile, without exaggeration. The body is slightly longer than the height at the withers, the back is level and movement should be free, active and parallel. The breed standard's approximate 25 cm and 4–7 kg are useful guidelines. If adult size matters greatly to you, also look at both parents and closely related adult dogs.

The head is small in proportion to the body, and the muzzle should be medium in length, blunt and free from wrinkles. A slight undershot bite is typical of the breed, but neither teeth nor tongue should show when the mouth is closed. The eyes should be dark brown, oval, clear and forward-facing. Assess the whole dog — clear eyes, a closed mouth, unrestricted movement and a proportionate head — rather than choosing the one with the most extreme appearance.

The coat consists of a medium-length, fairly close-lying topcoat and a fine, dense undercoat. The ears, backs of the forelegs, tail and thighs carry longer feathering. Males tend to have a more pronounced mane than females, but the dog should not be over-coated. Every colour and mixture of colours is allowed; colour does not, however, predict temperament or health.

A thorough brush and comb once a week is a sensible starting point. Check the coat more frequently during moulting. Take the comb down to the skin and pay particular attention behind the ears, in the armpits and through the feathering, where friction can cause tangles. Wash the dog when it is genuinely dirty and let the condition of the coat, rather than a bathing calendar, decide. Calmly accustom a puppy to nail trimming, mouth care and other handling too; tooth brushing is an important lifelong routine.

## Temperament & Personality

The Tibetan Spaniel suits someone who appreciates an attentive companion with a mind of its own. The breed ideal is cheerful, self-assured, intelligent, alert and loyal. Its independence can be charming, but also means the dog may not work simply because it is asked. The breed can suit a first-time owner, but is not automatically easy: patience, reward-based training and respect for the dog's signals matter more than having owned a dog before.

The fact that the breed may be aloof with strangers does not excuse fear or aggression. A stable dog should be able to watch from a distance and then settle without being forced to greet. When visiting a breeder, observe how the dam and other adult relatives react to a new person, touch, sounds and everyday excitement. They should be able to seek support and recover.

Alertness can mean barking when something changes outside a door or window. The amount an individual barks is also influenced by environment, experience and training. Rather than asking only whether the breed is “barky”, ask how the parents behave when visitors arrive and how quickly they settle again. In a home where sound travels easily, reward quiet watching from the outset, teach a clear cue to leave the trigger and settle, and restrict lookout points that keep the dog constantly on duty.

BPH, the Swedish behavioural and personality assessment for dogs, can provide useful information about an individual dog's reactions, but it is a description rather than a pass-or-fail test. If parents or adult relatives have completed a BPH, review the results with the breeder. Treat them as additional evidence alongside what you observe, not as a guarantee of the puppy's future personality.

## Training & Exercise

The Tibetan Spaniel needs to move and use its brain every day, but its needs cannot be reduced to a fixed number of minutes. The breed can accompany you on longer outings and still relax at home. A sound routine alternates walks, scent work, play and cooperative exercises with undisturbed rest. Adjust the load to age, health, ground conditions and weather, and to how quickly the dog returns to normal movement and energy afterwards.

Reward-based, progressive training suits the breed's independent nature. Make the task clear and worthwhile instead of raising your voice or using physical corrections. Vary the setting and the reward, and finish while the dog is still engaged. Short sessions can be practical, but concentration and quality matter more than the clock.

Prioritise skills that make everyday life safe and calm:

- attention and walking with you near traffic and other distractions
- recall, initially practised on a long line or in an enclosed area
- a cue to move away from the door or window and settle
- willing participation in grooming and examination of the paws, mouth and eyes
- calm greetings and the ability to rest despite sounds in a stairwell or outside the home
- gradual training for time alone, without leaving the dog for longer than it can remain settled

Dog sports can be enjoyable if the individual likes them, but they are not essential and do not by themselves prove that the dog's everyday needs are being met. What matters is a dog that moves freely, remains curious during activity and can wind down afterwards.

## Health

Eye health is the most concrete documentation to check when buying a Swedish-bred Tibetan Spaniel. For a litter to be registered with the Swedish Kennel Club, both parents must have an official eye examination result that was no more than one year old at the time of mating. Ask to see the registration numbers, examination dates and actual results for both parents — not simply an assurance that they have been “tested”.

PRA is an umbrella term for inherited retinal diseases that can lead to blindness. PRA3 is one of the genetic variants found in the breed, but a PRA3 DNA test does not cover every cause of clinical PRA. An eye examination and a DNA test therefore answer different questions:

- an eye examination records the clinical condition of the eyes at the time and can detect PRA and other changes
- a PRA3 test shows whether the dog is clear, a carrier or genetically affected by that particular PRA3 variant
- a carrier is not affected by PRA3 but can pass on the variant and should only be mated to a clear dog
- a clear PRA3 result does not certify that the dog is free from every eye disease

PRA3 results can be recorded centrally, but the DNA test is not the same formal requirement as the current eye examination. If a breeder says a dog is hereditarily clear, check that this is actually recorded. The Swedish Kennel Club records clear status by descent for no more than three generations.

The breed club also draws attention to renal dysplasia, abnormal eyelashes, inward-turning eyelids and patellar luxation in its breeding work. This does not mean every Tibetan Spaniel will be affected or that all these examinations are mandatory for registration. Ask instead about actual diagnoses and examination results in parents, siblings and older close relatives. When buying a puppy, a short, verifiable family history is more useful than a sweeping claim that a line is “completely healthy”.

## History & Origins

The Tibetan Spaniel has Asian origins, but its early history is not an unbroken, fully documented pedigree. Small dogs existed in Tibet and China for a long time, and breed tradition associates them with palaces and monasteries as companions and alert watchdogs. It is not possible to establish with certainty exactly where the type first developed or how it moved between regions.

The modern breed was developed in Britain, where it was documented in the late nineteenth century. In 1934, the Tibetan breeds received their own standards through the British Tibetan Breeds Association. After the Second World War, the British population was rebuilt from a small number of dogs. Britain therefore holds responsibility for the standard, even though Tibet is listed as the country of origin.

The first Tibetan Spaniel was imported into Sweden in 1955, with the first Swedish registration following the next year. Those dates are better documented than stories detailing how monastery dogs were given away or worked on walls. Such stories may help to explain the breed's reputation as an alert companion, but should be read as tradition rather than verified history.

## Living with the Breed

The Tibetan Spaniel can live successfully in a flat or a house when its routine provides exercise, mental activity, rest and social contact. The size of the home matters less than frequent opportunities to go outside and effective management of alert barking. In a flat, pay particular attention to the parents' barking, how easily sound travels in the building, and whether you can train calm behaviour at the door, window and in shared stairways.

The basic rules around children are the same as for other small dogs: an adult should be present, children should not lift or carry the dog, and the dog needs a protected resting place. A confident individual can become a lovely family dog, but a breed name never replaces supervision or respect for body language.

Living with another dog or a cat depends on the individuals and how they are introduced. Ask about the parents' and puppy's actual experience of other animals. For a cat introduction, begin with separate spaces and scent exchange, move on to a barrier and lead, and make sure the cat always has a clear escape route. Let both animals proceed at their own pace and do not leave them together unsupervised until their behaviour is predictable — and even then, each should have its own space.

Time alone is a trained skill, not a fixed breed trait. A young puppy cannot be left alone, and an adult dog must be accustomed gradually, starting with very short, calm absences. Increase the duration only when the dog can rest without persistent barking, pacing or distress. If your routine requires the dog to spend full working days alone, this breed, like other companion dogs, is a poor choice unless suitable daytime care is arranged.

Before buying, you should be able to get clear answers to the following:

- why this particular mating was chosen and how the parents behave in daily life
- the parents' registration numbers, and the dates and results of their eye examinations
- the PRA3 status of both parents and what the combination means for the puppies
- known cases of eye problems, renal dysplasia and patellar luxation among close relatives
- adult size, barking, responses to strangers and recovery after excitement in parents and older offspring

The breed is best suited to someone who wants to live with a small, active companion that likes to stay close but will not always obey on command. If you can offer kind training, clear everyday boundaries and room for an independent personality, the Tibetan Spaniel can enjoy outings, keep an alert eye on its surroundings and settle peacefully at home.

The Portuguese Water Dog is a medium-sized, work-oriented dog for someone who wants to do more with their dog than take short walks. The breed comes from Portugal, belongs to FCI Group 8 and once worked alongside fishermen. Today it is primarily an active companion dog.

- **Size:** males stand 50–57 cm at the withers and weigh 19–25 kg; females stand 43–52 cm and weigh 16–22 kg.
- **Coat:** a profuse coat with no undercoat, either long and wavy or shorter and curly.
- **Colour:** black, various shades of brown or solid white. Black and brown dogs may have white markings on certain parts of the body.
- **Temperament:** often sociable, playful, curious and quick to learn, although individuals differ noticeably.
- **Activity:** needs a thoughtful mix of walks, scent work, training, play and rest.
- **Grooming:** needs regular, thorough combing and clipping, especially while the coat is changing.
- **Life expectancy:** the median was 13.0 years in a large 2024 UK study, but the breed-specific sample was limited.

The breed is best suited to a home where the dog can take part in family life and use both body and mind. It is a poorer choice for someone who wants an easy-care coat or a dog content with the same gentle walk every day.

## Appearance & Coat

The Portuguese Water Dog is compact, strong and almost square without being heavy. There is pronounced webbing between the toes, and the breed standard also describes the tail as an aid when swimming and diving.

There are two accepted coat types. The wavy coat is longer, slightly glossy and woolly, while the curly coat is shorter and denser, forming compact curls. Neither has an undercoat. This does not make the coat maintenance-free, nor does it mean that the dog never loses hair. Loose hairs can remain in the coat and form mats instead of falling on the floor.

Grooming has to suit the coat type, length and stage of life. Work through the entire coat down to the skin, paying particular attention behind the ears, in the armpits, on the legs and beneath a harness or collar. An adult coat can often be combed through about once a week, but a longer coat or one that is changing may need more frequent attention. The dog also needs clipping, either at home or by a professional groomer.

In the traditional clip, the hair is shortened on the muzzle, hindquarters and most of the tail, leaving a plume at the tip. The breed standard describes its appearance, but does not substantiate stories that the clip protected particular organs or joints. Those explanations are not established historical facts.

Gradually teach a puppy to accept a comb, scissors or clippers, as well as having its paws, ears and mouth handled. Short sessions paired with rewards make it easier to groom an adult dog without a struggle.

The Portuguese Water Dog is not allergy-free. Dog allergens occur in saliva and material shed from the skin, and the amount varies between individuals, even within a single litter. A coat without an undercoat is therefore no guarantee. Anyone with a dog allergy should seek medical advice about their own situation rather than buy a puppy because of the breed's reputation.

## Temperament & Personality

The Portuguese Water Dog is often people-oriented, playful and enterprising, and usually enjoys working with a person when the task feels worthwhile. The breed standard describes an intelligent, strong-willed dog with considerable stamina. In daily life, that combination can produce a responsive training partner, but also a dog that quickly learns unwanted habits when boundaries are unclear.

The Swedish Kennel Club's analysis of just over 200 Portuguese Water Dogs assessed through BPH found a relatively sociable, playful, fairly confident and curious group. Greetings, curiosity and interest in a new toy nevertheless varied clearly. Only a small proportion of the Swedish population at the time had taken part. The results therefore show tendencies in the group studied, not what every puppy will become.

Meet at least the dam and ask how close relatives respond to unfamiliar people, noises, handling and the need to settle after excitement. A completed BPH or MH can provide useful information, but it should be considered alongside everyday behaviour and behaviour seen in the wider family.

The breed can live happily with children and other animals, but the outcome depends on the individual, previous experience and introductions. A dog and a young child always need adult supervision, and the dog needs a quiet resting place where it will not be disturbed. Do not let a lively adolescent get into the habit of chasing the cat or crowding an older dog. Calm meetings, space and active supervision are more useful than a blanket promise that the breed “gets on with everyone”.

## Training & Exercise

The Portuguese Water Dog needs daily activity, but there is no single time quota that suits every dog. Age, health, fitness and personality determine the right level. Combine walks in different environments and safe opportunities to move freely with scent work, co-operative exercises and quiet rest.

The breed often takes readily to tasks that involve carrying, retrieving, searching and problem-solving. Retrieving, search work, tracking, obedience, agility and water work are options, not requirements. Choose activities that both dog and owner enjoy, and keep training sessions short and clear.

Reward-based training suits a quick and inventive dog. Reinforce what you want to see more often: attention, four paws on the floor, a calm passage through a doorway and the ability to wait. Teach the dog that activity has a beginning and an end as well. A dog that is only offered more excitement may become adept at getting worked up without learning how to settle.

The breed's history supports an interest in water, but not every individual enjoys swimming. Start in shallow water, allow the dog to choose whether to enter and use play or retrieving without force. Swimming is one activity option, not a test of whether the dog is a “real” Portuguese Water Dog. Always take the temperature, water conditions and the dog's ability into account.

Puppies and adolescent dogs primarily need varied movement, body awareness, experience of different environments and sufficient rest. Long, repetitive or high-impact sessions are not a shortcut to a fit adult. Increase difficulty and endurance gradually.

## Health

The Portuguese Water Dog is described as a relatively healthy breed, but a puppy buyer should check hips, eyes, relevant DNA results and family health. Ask for registration numbers and inspect official results rather than accepting the phrase “health-tested parents”.

Under the 2026 rules for puppies registered with the Swedish Kennel Club, both parents must have official hip status before mating. They must therefore have had their hips X-rayed, but the rules do not restrict this breed to grades A or B only. The parents also need an official eye examination no more than one year old, and a dog with PRA must not itself be bred from.

The breed club's published conditions for puppy referrals go further. They include hip grade A or B and require at least one parent to have a normal prcd-PRA DNA result. The test is a valuable breeding tool, but it is not listed as a compulsory DNA requirement for the breed in the Swedish Kennel Club's 2026 registration rules.

prcd-PRA is an inherited retinal disease that gradually impairs sight. An eye examination can reveal the disease, while the DNA test distinguishes genetically clear, carrier and affected dogs. A carrier is not ill; what matters is combining the parents' results so that affected puppies are not born.

The breed club also describes JDCM, a recessively inherited heart disease affecting young dogs, and recommends testing to avoid affected puppies. The result is not required for registration under the Swedish Kennel Club's rules. Ask the breeder which tests have been carried out, what the results mean for this particular mating and why the mating was chosen.

Addison's disease and hypothyroidism have been reported in the breed, but older Swedish material could not give reliable frequencies. Ask about diagnosed disease and unusually early deaths among parents, siblings and previous offspring without assuming that every dog will be affected.

A UK study of more than half a million dogs estimated the breed's median life expectancy at 13.0 years. The Portuguese Water Dog sample included 179 individuals, of which 36 had died, and the uncertainty was considerable. Treat the figure as a guide, not a promise that an individual dog will reach a particular age.

## History & Origins

The Portuguese Water Dog comes from Portugal and historically worked along the country's coast. As fishing methods changed, the breed became concentrated in the Algarve, which the breed standard regards as its original home region.

The FCI breed standard records specific duties: the dog helped the fisherman retrieve escaped fish, dived after broken nets and loose lines, acted as a link between boat and shore, and guarded the boat and property. The work called for swimming ability, endurance, attentiveness and initiative.

That background helps to explain why many individuals enjoy retrieving, search tasks and close co-operation. It does not mean that every dog loves water or has the same drive to work. Breeding, upbringing and the dog's own experiences matter too.

Today the breed is primarily an active companion. Its recorded jobs explain its tendency to co-operate, carry, search and work in water without any need for uncertain tales about lifesaving at sea or the purpose of its traditional clip.

## Living with the Breed

Life with a Portuguese Water Dog works best when there is time every day for company, grooming and varied activity. A large garden does not replace shared walks and training. A flat can work if the dog's needs are met and calm behaviour is taught when someone rings the bell or moves through the communal hallway. Some guarding instinct occurs, but how vocal a dog is varies between individuals.

Plan how to teach the dog to spend time alone from the beginning, without rushing it. Once the puppy feels secure at home, practise very short periods behind a gate or door. Increase the time only when the puppy can remain calm. The breed name cannot tell you how long a particular dog can cope alone without stress. If daily life involves long working days, arrange suitable care.

Make a realistic weekly plan before buying. It needs to allow for:

- walks and meaningful activity, including in poor weather,
- thorough coat care and regular clipping,
- brief everyday training and help with settling,
- gradual alone-time training and a back-up care arrangement,
- safe routines with children, visitors and other animals,
- the cost of insurance, veterinary care, equipment and, if required, a professional groomer.

The breeder should give clear answers about the parents' temperament, official hip and eye results, how prcd-PRA and JDCM have been managed, and which diseases occur in the family. A good match depends as much on the breeding line and individual dog as on breed. In the right home, the Portuguese Water Dog is an enthusiastic and versatile companion; in a home that cannot meet its needs, the same energy, inventiveness and coat quickly become a substantial responsibility.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small British terrier kept primarily as a companion, but it should still be alert, intelligent and spirited, with an even temperament.

- The breed is recognised by the FCI as British terrier number 86, in Group 3 and the Toy Terrier section.
- The breed standard sets a maximum weight of 3.2 kg but no minimum weight or height at the withers. In practice, many dogs are heavier than the standard maximum.
- “Teacup” is not an official Yorkshire Terrier size category. The label therefore cannot guarantee a dog’s adult size or health.
- The coat should be straight, glossy, fine and silky. A long coat requires considerable care; clipping it short reduces the work but does not make it maintenance-free.
- The clearest documented health priorities are the teeth, retained deciduous teeth and patellar luxation, or slipping kneecaps.

## Appearance & Coat

The Yorkshire Terrier should be compact, neat and well proportioned, with an upright carriage and free movement. It may be very small, but it should not look fragile or exaggeratedly miniaturised.

The 3.2 kg maximum describes the show standard’s ideal, not a promise for every adult dog. The standard gives no height at the withers. SKK reports that most dogs are around 20–25 cm and that many weigh more than the standard maximum; even puppies in the same litter can reach different adult sizes. A puppy buyer should therefore ask for the actual weights of the parents and adult relatives rather than rely on terms such as “mini” or “teacup”.

The standard adult coat is dark steel blue over the body and clear golden tan on areas including the head and chest. The hair should be straight and glossy with a fine, silky texture, not woolly. Puppies are born black and tan, and the steel-blue adult colour develops gradually. The pace at which colour and texture mature varies, so a puppy coat cannot show exactly what the adult dog will look like.

A long coat needs frequent, thorough combing all the way to the skin, particularly where the hair is exposed to friction. Many companion dogs are clipped short for an easier routine. This makes bathing, drying and detangling less time-consuming, but the dog still needs brushing and must learn to accept handling around the face, ears, feet and nails. The coat has no undercoat, which can also mean that the dog needs protection in cold, wet weather.

The Yorkshire Terrier is sometimes described as suitable for people with allergies because it sheds little visible hair. That is misleading as a guarantee: no dog is allergen-free, and dog allergens come from sources including saliva and skin cells. Anyone who has or suspects an animal allergy should seek medical advice before getting a dog.

A tricoloured Biewer Terrier is not a special Yorkshire Terrier colour. In Sweden and the other Nordic countries, the Biewer Terrier is treated as a separate breed, despite its close historical relationship with the Yorkshire Terrier. It is not, however, recognised by the FCI.

## Temperament & Personality

The Yorkshire Terrier is generally attentive, curious and ready to act, rather than a passive lapdog. The breed standard emphasises intelligence, spirit and an even disposition, but sociability, barking and interest in chasing vary between dogs and are influenced by upbringing and training.

Its quick response to sounds and movement can make the breed inclined to sound the alarm. That does not mean every dog barks excessively. A dog that is allowed to investigate its surroundings calmly, rewarded for quiet behaviour and taught to settle is better equipped to handle sounds at the door and movement outside a window. Simply interrupting barking without changing its cause rarely creates a sustainable routine.

The terrier background may show as an interest in toys, scents and small animals. Recall and the ability to disengage from something exciting therefore need training, even with a dog that is easy to pick up. Living with a cat or another dog depends more on the individual, the introduction and daily routines than on a simple yes-or-no verdict for the breed.

With children, the small body is the most important practical consideration. A child must be able to let the dog move away, play at floor level and refrain from carrying or chasing it. Contact with young children should be supervised. The same care is needed during play with much larger dogs, because friendly but physical play can still be too rough for a Yorkshire Terrier.

## Training & Exercise

The Yorkshire Terrier needs daily physical and mental activity, but there is no meaningful number of minutes that suits every dog. A good day includes several toilet outings, walks with time to sniff, play, simple problem-solving and training in which the dog can succeed.

Adapt the amount and intensity to age, fitness, weather and the individual. It is more useful to observe how the dog functions in everyday life and adjust one thing at a time than to chase a generic number of minutes.

Reward-based training suits the breed’s quick understanding. Prioritise engagement, recall, loose-lead skills, a calm resting place and an alternative behaviour when the dog wants to alert. Also practise grooming, showing the teeth and nail care in small steps. This makes everyday care safer and reduces the need to restrain the dog.

Socialisation does not mean that a puppy must greet everyone. It needs calm, positive experiences of people, dogs, surfaces, traffic and household sounds without being pressured. The breed may also enjoy scent work, rally obedience, tracking, tricks or agility adapted to its size. The particular activity matters less than giving the dog ways to use both body and mind.

## Health

The Yorkshire Terrier is relatively long-lived as a population, but the teeth and knee joints deserve particular attention. SKK highlights dental calculus, retained deciduous teeth and patellar luxation as issues to know about.

A British study published in 2025 reviewed the records of 3,308 Yorkshire Terriers attending general veterinary practices during 2016. Periodontal disease was the most common specific diagnosis and was recorded in 21.1 per cent during the study year. Retained deciduous teeth were recorded in 3.57 per cent, and the researchers also identified patellar luxation as a breed predisposition. The figures describe a British study group during a defined period, not the risk for a particular Swedish dog, but they make dental care a clear everyday priority.

Start getting the puppy accustomed to tooth brushing early. Daily tooth brushing is the best practical protection against plaque and calculus, but training should be built without force. Ask a veterinarian to check the transition to adult teeth if deciduous teeth remain as the permanent teeth erupt or if the dog appears to have a painful mouth.

Ask the breeder to explain what is known about teeth, bite and knee joints in the parents and close relatives. Ask whether the parents have been examined for patellar luxation and request documented results if available. A single test can reduce uncertainty but can never guarantee a healthy puppy.

There is no universal, permanent Yorkshire Terrier test package across all kennel clubs. Before buying or breeding, check the current Swedish registration rules and recommendations from SKK and the breed club rather than relying on an old list found online.

In the British study, the median age at death was 13.56 years, supporting the picture of a long-lived breed. This is a population measure, not a forecast for an individual. Body condition, oral health, movement, behavioural changes and regular veterinary care need attention throughout life.

## History & Origins

The Yorkshire Terrier developed in northern England during the 1800s and took shape in Yorkshire’s textile districts. From the 1850s, weavers and wool-mill workers bred very small, soft-coated terriers that retained the terrier’s interest in hunting and also became sought-after companion dogs.

The breed’s exact recipe is not securely documented. The old Black and Tan Terrier, together with the Maltese, Dandie Dinmont Terrier and Skye Terrier, are mentioned as probable contributors. It is therefore more accurate to speak of likely ancestors than to name a definite cross.

The breed name was accepted around 1870, and the Yorkshire Terrier was recognised as a breed in 1886. During the later 1800s, it moved from the small terriers of working communities to a modern companion and show dog. The rat-catching story has a reasonable basis in the terrier background and the breed standard’s description of hunting instinct, but not every early dog necessarily worked in a mine or factory.

The elegant coat has since received great attention, but the breed’s alert expression, initiative and interest in movement remain important to the breed as a whole.

## Living with the Breed

The Yorkshire Terrier can live well in a flat or a house when it receives activity, calmness training and regular care. The size of the home matters less than whether the household can manage noise, provide time outdoors and create a secure daily rhythm.

Time alone needs to be introduced gradually from very short periods and adapted to the dog’s response. The Swedish Board of Agriculture advises that dogs should be taken outside at least every six hours during the day, but this does not mean that a dog can cope with six hours alone. Puppies and older dogs need more frequent outings, and a dog showing distress needs a different arrangement regardless of what the clock says.

The breed best suits someone who wants a small but active dog and accepts three recurring parts of everyday life: coat, teeth and training. A family with young children or large dogs also needs clear safety routines. Cold and wet weather may require protection, particularly when the coat is clipped short or the dog is standing still.

Before buying a puppy, it is sensible to:

- meet the dam and ask how the parents and adult relatives behave in everyday life
- request the actual weights of the parents and adult relatives and reject promises of a particular “teacup” size
- review documented dental, bite and patella history as well as current breeding recommendations
- decide whether to maintain a long coat or keep the dog clipped, and learn that routine before purchase
- arrange toilet outings, alone-time training and a dog sitter before the puppy comes home.

In the right household, the Yorkshire Terrier is a small, engaged everyday companion with a distinct terrier character. It is easy to take along, but it should be treated as an active dog, not an accessory.

The coat should be long and silky without curls; a slight wave is permitted. There is feathering on the ears, legs, feet and tail. The four colours are:

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was bred for companionship and is generally open, affectionate and sociable. The breed standard describes a happy, friendly dog without aggression or nervousness, but this is a breeding ideal, not a guarantee for every individual.

Results from Swedish BPH behaviour assessments provide a more nuanced picture. In an analysis of 192 Swedish-bred Cavaliers, the breed was mainly confident and did not generally react aggressively in social encounters. The average dog was not considered vocal either, although some dogs barked or whined in situations where this was not expected. There is genuine variation behind the breed description. If possible, meet the puppy's mother, ask how both parents behave in daily life and find out whether fear, stress or resource guarding occurs in close relatives.

The breed often fits well into family life and is generally sociable with other dogs. The same safety rules that apply to every dog still apply around young children: an adult should be present, and the dog needs a quiet resting place where it will not be disturbed. Children should learn not to carry the dog, pull its ears or disturb it while it is eating or sleeping. Living with a cat depends on the individual dog, previous experience and a calm introduction; the breed name offers no guarantee.

## Training & Exercise

A Cavalier needs to move and use its brain every day, but the right amount depends on age, health, fitness and recovery rather than a fixed number of minutes. A healthy adult can combine walks and off-lead movement in a secure place with scent games, play and short training sessions. Many enjoy obedience, rally obedience or agility at a level suited to the individual.

Short, positive sessions make it easier to maintain focus. Start early with engagement, walking together and recall, and reward the dog for choosing you despite scents and other distractions. Even a companion dog with spaniel ancestry can become absorbed by something interesting outdoors, so use a long line until recall is reliable in that particular environment.

Puppies need to explore, play and rest at their own pace. Avoid generic five-minute rules and instead build activity gradually without pushing a tired puppy. A dog with a heart murmur, heart disease, pain or neurological signs needs an individual plan from a veterinary surgeon.

## Health

Heart health is the most important breed-specific check for a puppy buyer in Sweden. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is particularly predisposed to myxomatous mitral valve disease, or MMVD. The valve between the left atrium and ventricle changes so that blood may leak backwards and produce a heart murmur. A dog can have the disease without visible signs for a long time, while others later develop heart failure.

The breed is covered by a level 3 heart screening programme. To meet the registration rules for the offspring, both parents must have an official certificate showing no heart murmur. The certificate must be no more than 12 months old at the time of mating, and the minimum age for an official heart certificate is three years. This is a minimum standard, not proof that a mating is free from risk. Ask for the parents' registration numbers, check the results in the Swedish Kennel Club's Hunddata or Avelsdata services, and consider how long older close relatives remained free of murmurs. The breed club recommends annual heart examinations from the age of three until a murmur is detected, including for dogs no longer used for breeding.

Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia, CM/SM, are another important health concern. When the skull is too small in relation to the brain, the flow of cerebrospinal fluid may be disrupted and a fluid-filled cavity can form within the spinal cord. Some dogs with mild findings show no clear signs. Others experience pain, become sensitive around the head or neck, are reluctant to move, scratch at the air near the neck, or show weakness and poorer coordination. A veterinary surgeon should assess such signs. MRI can be used in breeding selection, but it is a breed-club recommendation and should not be confused with the mandatory heart programme. Ask the breeder about clinical signs and MRI results in the parents and close relatives.

The Swedish breed club also recommends eye examinations and patellar luxation checks for breeding dogs once they are at least one year old. The distinction matters here too: these are recommended checks, not the same registration requirement as the heart certificate. A buyer therefore needs to distinguish between formal requirements, breed-club recommendations and the combined results seen across the family.

## History & Origins

The modern Cavalier King Charles Spaniel originated in Great Britain and is closely associated with the small spaniels seen in European paintings over several centuries. The dogs gained their royal name through their connection with the House of Stuart and Charles II in particular.

As the short-muzzled type became fashionable, the King Charles Spaniel changed. In 1926, the American Roswell Eldridge offered prizes at Crufts for dogs resembling the older type, with a longer muzzle and flatter skull. A British breed club was founded in 1928, and in 1945 The Kennel Club recognised the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as a separate breed.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the King Charles Spaniel are therefore not two names for the same dog. They are separate breeds with a shared background, and the Cavalier was developed to recapture more of the older spaniel type.

## Living with the Breed

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can live well in either a flat or a house if it receives company, walks, mental activity and undisturbed rest. The size of the home is no substitute for a suitable daily routine. The breed can also suit a first-time owner who is prepared to train, care for the coat and take health screening seriously; its small size does not make it automatically low-maintenance.

Time alone should be introduced gradually, once the puppy feels secure at home. Step away for very short periods and increase the duration only when the dog can relax. Whining, persistent barking, destructive behaviour, refusing food or toileting indoors can be signs of distress. Individual dogs cope with different amounts of time alone, so arrange a dog sitter or another solution if daily life requires more separation than your dog can comfortably manage.

Three checks are particularly valuable before buying a puppy:

1. Check the parents' current heart certificates and the results of older relatives in the Swedish Kennel Club's public records.
2. Ask separately about CM/SM signs and MRI, as well as eye and patella examinations; do not confuse these recommendations with the heart programme requirements.
3. Assess the parents' everyday temperament and how the puppies have been introduced to people, handling and a home environment.

These checks provide a more realistic picture than relying on the breed's friendly reputation alone. A carefully chosen Cavalier can be an engaged and very close companion, but it needs an owner who takes both its social needs and documented health risks seriously.

## Appearance & Coat

The Bostonterrier should be compact, well balanced and free-moving, without exaggeration in any feature. The head is short, but under the breed standard the muzzle must be no longer than one third of the length of the skull. Accepted colours are brindle, seal or black with white markings. The white markings are an important part of the breed's appearance, but colour and symmetry say nothing about health. Function matters more: the dog should be able to breathe freely, move without restriction and close its eyelids properly.

The short, close coat generally needs little work. Brush and bathe as required, and check the nails, teeth, ears and eyes regularly.

## Temperament & Personality

The Bostonterrier should be friendly, lively and intelligent, and many individuals actively seek human company and want to be involved in daily life. Even so, this does not guarantee that every dog will be comfortable with children, unfamiliar dogs or new environments.

Genetics, early experience, health and training all shape the individual dog. Ask the breeder how the parents behave in ordinary life: how they recover after something unexpected, greet people, cope with other dogs and settle at home. If possible, meet the dam and watch her in a normal situation, rather than only when the puppies are excited.

The breed can be both playful and focused. Reward-based training with clear breaks is usually more suitable than harsh corrections or long, repetitive sessions. Teach calm behaviour, comfortable handling around the eyes and paws, recall, and the ability to wait without becoming overexcited from an early age.

## Training & Exercise

A Bostonterrier needs daily movement and mental activity, but there is no safe number of minutes that suits every dog. Combine walks with scent work, short training sessions, play and quiet recovery. A healthy dog with good respiratory function may enjoy a range of dog sports, while a dog that develops noisy or laboured breathing needs a veterinary assessment and adapted activity.

Judge exercise by how the dog breathes and recovers, not by how keen it is to carry on. Stop and move the dog to a cool place if breathing becomes clearly noisy or laboured, if it slows down, struggles to recover or seems unusually hot. Bluish mucous membranes, weakness, collapse or marked breathing difficulty require emergency veterinary care.

Short-muzzled dogs are particularly sensitive to heat because panting is less effective at cooling them. Exercise during the cooler parts of the day, offer water and avoid strenuous activity in hot or humid weather. Excess weight places more strain on the airways and joints, so monitor body condition rather than relying only on the number on the scales.

## Health

The main health checks for a Bostonterrier concern respiratory function, eye health, patella status and early-onset juvenile cataract. Ask for actual examination results for both parents; an energetic impression or quiet breathing during a brief meeting is not a substitute for documentation.

BOAS is an umbrella term for breathing problems that can occur when a short muzzle and the soft tissues in the nose and throat restrict airflow. Snoring should therefore not automatically be dismissed as a harmless breed trait. Look out for breathing noise at rest, laboured inhalation, poor stamina, prolonged recovery, disturbed sleep, heat intolerance or fainting.

The RFG Scheme is a standardised veterinary assessment of respiratory function. The dog is assessed before and after three minutes of brisk movement and receives a grade from 0 to 3. Grade 0 means that the dog is currently clinically unaffected; grades 2 and 3 indicate clinical impairment. Results from dogs aged at least 24 months are registered centrally, while results from younger dogs are recorded as preliminary.

Since May 2026, RFG results for Bostonterriers can be registered centrally by the Swedish Kennel Club, but the assessment is not currently mandatory before breeding for this breed. This should not be confused with the Swedish Kennel Club's general breeding recommendation, which gives first preference to grade 0, or with the breed club's conditions for listing a litter through its puppy referral service.

The eyes are relatively large and exposed. Contact a vet promptly if the dog suddenly squints, keeps one eye closed, rubs it with a paw, or develops a red, watery or cloudy eye; eye pain is treated as an emergency. Early-onset juvenile cataract is a recessively inherited disease affecting both eyes and can cause blindness early in life. A DNA test can show whether a dog is clear, carries one copy of the disease variant or has inherited it from both parents. Mating two carriers can produce genetically affected puppies and should therefore be avoided.

Patellar luxation, in which the kneecap can slip out of position, also occurs in the breed. When a litter is to be included in its puppy referral service, Svenska Bostonterrierklubben asks for details of the parents' latest eye examination, patella results and DNA test or evidence of clear-by-parentage status for juvenile cataract. This is valuable information for a buyer, but it should not be described as a binding registration requirement for every litter.

## History & Origins

The Bostonterrier was developed in and around Boston, Massachusetts, during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Purposeful breeding took shape roughly between 1870 and 1890, but the earliest crosses are not fully documented. The breed can therefore be described as having been developed from the bulldog and terrier types of the time, but no exact mixture can be stated with certainty.

The American Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1893. Over time, it developed from heavier predecessors into the smaller, elegant companion described by today's breed standard. The Bostonterrier is now an internationally recognised breed with the United States as its country of origin.

## Living with the Breed

A Bostonterrier can live successfully in a flat or a house, but the size of the home does not decide whether daily life will work. The dog needs physical and mental activity every day, an undisturbed place to rest, and practice settling when nothing is happening. Barking and sensitivity to noise vary between individuals; if quiet living matters, ask how the parents behave at home.

Being left alone must be taught gradually. A young puppy cannot be left alone, and adult dogs also vary greatly in what they can manage without distress. Start with very short, calm separations and increase the time only while the dog can settle. For dogs kept in Sweden, the Swedish Board of Agriculture states that dogs must receive physical and mental activity every day and should be taken out at least every six hours during the daytime; puppies and older dogs need more frequent outings.

With children, adult supervision and a protected resting place matter more than the breed's reputation as a family dog. Children should not lift the dog, pull its ears or approach it while it is eating or sleeping. Introductions to cats and other dogs should be calm and controlled. Previous experience and the individual dog's behaviour carry more weight than the breed name.

Before buying, ask the breeder to show:

- both parents' RFG results and their ages when assessed;
- the latest eye examination and patella results;
- registered DNA status for early-onset juvenile cataract and how it informed the mating;
- how close relatives fare in terms of breathing, eyes, knees and everyday temperament;
- how the puppies are introduced to handling, rest, different surfaces, people and ordinary household sounds.

This provides a better basis for a decision than promises that the breed is always easy, quiet or problem-free.

The Medium Poodle is one of the four recognised Poodle sizes, sitting between the Miniature and Standard varieties. It is an attentive, highly trainable companion dog with a coat that demands considerable care.

- **Size:** Height at the withers must be over 35 and no more than 45 centimetres. The breed standard gives no official weight, so assess an adult by its build and body condition rather than a generic weight range.
- **Size variety:** A Poodle that has not yet had its final measurement may change size variety after an official measurement. In Sweden, final measurement is available from 15 months of age.
- **Temperament:** The breed ideal is a positive, sociable and quick-learning dog, but social confidence, activity levels and responses to noise vary between individuals and family lines.
- **Activity:** A Medium Poodle needs physical exercise and mental engagement every day. A fixed number of minutes will not suit every dog.
- **Coat:** The coat may be curly or corded and often sheds very little, but it requires thorough combing, bathing, drying and clipping.
- **Health checks for breeding:** Before mating, both parents must have a valid official prcd-PRA result, either from a DNA test or through valid recorded status as hereditarily clear.

## Appearance & Coat

The Medium Poodle is harmoniously built, with a body that is slightly longer than its height at the withers. It should look alert and active without appearing heavy or low to the ground. Height is what distinguishes it from the Miniature and Standard Poodle.

The dense coat may be curly or form cords. It keeps growing and needs clipping, but the interval depends on coat length, style, daily life and how readily that particular coat mats. A short, practical trim will often reduce the workload, but it does not remove the need for grooming.

Comb all the way down to the skin, paying particular attention behind the ears, beneath a harness or collar, in the armpits and around the legs. Deal with small tangles before they tighten, and check the skin, ears and claws at the same time. Teach a puppy to stand still and accept touch in short, calm, rewarded sessions. This makes grooming at home and visits to a professional groomer easier.

Avoid a rigid timetable for bathing and clipping. Instead, check whether a comb passes through the entire coat, the skin stays clean and dry, and the dog can move freely. The dense coat needs to be dried thoroughly after bathing or swimming. Ask a vet to assess redness, an unpleasant smell or recurring skin or ear trouble rather than routinely plucking hair or using strong products.

Since the new breed standard took effect in 2024, the Swedish Kennel Club has registered 16 colour varieties, including solid and multicoloured dogs. This does not make merle an approved breeding colour. Under the Swedish registration rules, offspring from a merle-carrying parent cannot be registered, and such a mating also results in breeding restrictions.

Medium Poodles often release very little hair around the home because loose hairs can remain in the curls until the coat is combed. It is nevertheless misleading to call the breed non-shedding or allergy friendly. No dog breed is allergen-free, and an allergic person may react differently to different dogs. Anyone with allergies should therefore investigate their own reaction before buying, rather than relying on the breed name.

## Temperament & Personality

The breed ideal describes the Medium Poodle as friendly, sociable, lively and easy to train. Many people are drawn to its combination of willingness to work with a handler and practical medium size. The ideal is not a guarantee that every dog will be confident with children, strangers, other dogs or unfamiliar environments.

Sweden's Behaviour and Personality Assessment for Dogs (BPH) provides better evidence than claims that the breed is always easy. In the Swedish Poodle Club's Medium Poodle report from February 2026, 565 dogs had started a BPH. It is not a pass-or-fail test and does not tell you everything about an individual. It does, however, show responses to contact, play, surprises, noise and a person approaching in an unusual way.

Ask the breeder to put results in context. How do the parents and close relatives behave in everyday life? Do they seek contact without becoming intrusive? Can they settle, cope with sudden noises and recover after an unexpected event? Have several relatives been assessed, or is the opinion based on one dog? Questions like these say more than labels such as “clever”, “good with children” or “perfect for a first-time owner”.

A Medium Poodle may be quick to notice movement and noise, but barking tendency varies. Look at the parents' responses to sound and teach the dog to leave a window or door and settle in a quiet place. Activity combined with help to wind down gives a dog better prospects in a home where neighbouring sounds carry easily.

## Training & Exercise

A Medium Poodle needs to use both body and mind every day, but that need cannot be reduced to a set number of walking minutes. Age, health, fitness, surroundings and the individual dog's ability to settle determine a sensible level. A good daily routine includes walks with time to sniff, short training sessions and a task that involves thinking or searching.

Reward-based training suits the breed's willingness to cooperate and makes learning clear without causing fear. Start with attention, recall, staying with you, handling and resting in a chosen place. Increase difficulty gradually and use something the dog values as the reward: food, play, contact or permission to continue investigating something.

Scent work, tracking, retrieving, tricks, obedience, rally and agility are possible activities, not requirements. Vary physical exercise, problem-solving and recovery. A puppy needs shorter, simpler sessions, while a healthy adult can gradually be prepared for longer outings or more demanding sport.

Judge the balance of the daily routine, not just the amount of activity. If the dog can concentrate, recover and rest afterwards, the load is often better judged than when it remains constantly over-excited. Restlessness can mean the dog needs a task, but it can also mean it needs help to slow down. Give calm, sleep and settle training as much deliberate space as new tricks.

## Health

The formal health requirement when breeding Medium Poodles in Sweden concerns prcd-PRA, an inherited form of progressive retinal atrophy. Before mating, both parents must have official status through a DNA test or a valid hereditary-clear registration. A carrier may only be mated to a dog that is tested clear or hereditarily clear. A genetically affected dog must not be used for breeding.

A prcd-PRA result applies only to this genetic variant. It does not exclude other forms of PRA or other eye problems. The Swedish Poodle Club therefore also recommends repeat eye examinations for breeding dogs. The club also wants more Medium Poodles to be hip-scored and recommends that a dog with grade C hips be used sparingly and only with a hip-clear mate. These are recommendations, rather than the binding prcd-PRA requirement.

Ask to see dated official results and verify the dogs' identities rather than simply accepting that a litter is “health tested”. Ask about illness, mobility problems, eye trouble and temperament in the parents, full siblings, previous offspring and older relatives. One clear test does not sum up the health of an entire family.

Before buying a puppy, ask the breeder to explain:

- the prcd-PRA status of both parents and why the mating complies with the rules
- when the parents last had an eye examination and what hip results are available
- which other official results, such as BPH, exist for the parents and their close relatives
- which health problems have actually occurred in the family, even where no DNA test exists

Because the breed standard gives no ideal weight, assess an adult's body condition with both hands and eyes. You should be able to feel the ribs and see a waist that makes sense for the dog's build. Rapid weight change, lameness, a change in vision or recurring skin and ear problems are reasons to consult a vet.

## History & Origins

The FCI records France as the Poodle's country of origin. In the standard's historical note, the breed's French name, *caniche*, is linked to the French word for a female duck, and Poodles were used in wildfowling. The standard also describes the breed as descending from the Barbet, an older French water dog. That is the documented core; theories proposing one precise route of development across Europe should be treated with caution.

The Poodle developed into four sizes that share the same basic type. In Sweden, Poodles were divided into large and small varieties in 1932. The smaller variety was named the Medium Poodle in 1952, before Miniature and later Toy Poodles became further sizes. The Medium Poodle is therefore not a cross or a modern mixed breed, but a recognised size variety within the Poodle breed.

The breed's water-working past may inspire retrieving and swimming for dogs that enjoy them. It does not mean every Medium Poodle automatically likes water or must be trained for hunting. The modern breed is classified as a companion dog, and the individual dog's interest should guide the activity.

## Living with the Breed

Living with a Medium Poodle combines close companionship, daily activity and regular coat care that cannot be skipped. The breed can live in a flat or a house, but the size of the home matters less than the dog's ability to settle, cope with noise and have its needs met outside.

In a family with children, an adult must take responsibility for their interactions. Children should learn not to disturb the dog while it eats or rests, and the dog needs a place of its own where it will be left alone. Choose a dog and breeder based on evidence of sound temperament, not on the assumption that medium size automatically makes a dog sturdy or safe with children.

Time alone must be taught in small steps once the dog feels secure. Begin with very short periods and increase them only when the dog remains calm. Do not plan for a puppy or untrained adult to cope immediately with a full working day alone. Working hours, toilet breaks and help when needed must be arranged before the dog comes home.

The same individual approach applies to other animals. When introducing a cat, give the cat a safe escape area, prevent the dog from chasing and keep meetings short and controlled. Do not leave them alone together until both are relaxed and their interactions have remained stable over time. Living with other dogs or small animals depends on experience, chase and play drive, and the way introductions are managed, not just on breed.

Before buying, make sure you can provide three things throughout the dog's life: time for training and company, a plan for coat care, and the cost of professional clipping or your own equipment. Visit adult relatives if possible, ask to see how they settle and accept handling, and check the official health results. This lets you choose on evidence from the dogs themselves and your own routine, rather than an idealised image of the Medium Poodle.

## Quick Facts

The Danish Swedish Farmdog is a small but sturdy and active farm and companion dog from Denmark and Sweden. The FCI places the breed in Group 2 as a pinscher-type dog. It is therefore not a terrier, although it was previously called the Scanian Terrier.

- **Height at the withers:** 34–37 cm for males and 32–35 cm for females, with a permitted variation of 2 cm either way.
- **Original purpose:** to raise the alarm, catch rats and live closely with the people on the farm.
- **Temperament according to the breed standard:** alert, lively and attentive.
- **Coat:** short, harsh and smooth, with white as the dominant colour.
- **Best suited to:** a person or family who wants to teach everyday skills, provide both physical activity and scent work, and help the dog to settle.

The breed standard gives no official weight. Figures found on different websites should therefore be treated as guidelines, not as a range into which every adult Danish Swedish Farmdog must fit. When choosing a puppy, the parents’ size, body condition and soundness are more useful than a single weight range.

## Appearance & Coat

The Danish Swedish Farmdog should be small, compact and substantial, not fine or elegant. The body is slightly rectangular: the ratio of height at the withers to body length is 9:10. The breed matures physically at a late stage, and full muscle mass and body substance may not develop until the dog is three to four years old.

The head is relatively small and triangular. The ears may be rose-shaped or folded forwards; pricked ears are not part of the breed ideal. The tail may be naturally long or a congenital bobtail of varying length. A congenital bobtail is a natural variation and should not be confused with a docked tail.

The coat is harsh, short and smooth and has no undercoat. White should predominate, with patches of one or more colours: black, tan, yellow, liver, agouti or various shades of fawn. Patches should also be present on the head, and flecking in the white is permitted. Appearance can therefore vary considerably without the dogs belonging to different varieties of the breed.

The coat needs little care, although shedding can be noticeable. Brush out loose hair as required, particularly during periods of heavier shedding, and bathe the dog when it is actually dirty. Check the skin, ears, paws and claws at the same time. Introduce the puppy gradually to tooth brushing and other handling. Calm, reward-based handling practice makes both routine care and veterinary visits easier.

## Temperament & Personality

The Danish Swedish Farmdog is usually quick, curious and people-oriented, but the breed name is no guarantee of an easy-going family dog. The standard describes the breed as alert, lively and attentive. In daily life, this often means being ready to join in, reacting to movement and letting people know when something is happening nearby.

The farm watchdog role is still apparent in many individuals. Many will bark to alert when someone arrives, but how readily barking starts and how quickly the dog becomes quiet varies. In a home where sound carries easily, it is sensible to find out how the parents and adult relatives react to doors, communal stairwells and visitors. This is more informative than assuming that the breed is always quiet or always vocal.

In the Swedish Kennel Club’s older BPH behavioural assessment summary, the breed appears mainly confident and relatively energetic. At the same time, curiosity, playfulness and interest in unfamiliar people vary clearly. BPH describes a dog’s reactions; it is not a test that the dog passes or fails. Read the individual dog’s assessment record and ask how the parents behave in everyday life.

The breed’s background as a rat catcher makes interest in small, fast-moving animals relevant. This does not mean that every Farmdog chases everything it sees, but a prospective owner should expect to teach interruption cues and recall. Rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets need secure areas that the dog cannot access.

## Training & Exercise

The Danish Swedish Farmdog needs regular physical and mental activity, but there is no correct hourly rule that suits every dog. Age, health, intensity, environment and recovery determine what a good day looks like. An adult dog can have a mixture of walks, free movement in a safe place, scent work, play and short sessions of everyday training. Puppies need gradually increasing experiences and plenty of rest, not a miniature version of an adult programme.

Watch the dog’s behaviour rather than the clock. An appropriate amount leaves a dog able to settle at home, recover after activity and still move freely the next day. Persistent restlessness may mean that daily life lacks meaningful tasks, but more high-speed activity is not always the answer. Sometimes the dog needs more scent work, clearer routines or help to settle.

Prioritise skills that help a quick and attentive dog function in daily life:

- recall and voluntary check-ins when wildlife or other distractions appear
- being able to stop chasing, digging and intense play
- calm behaviour at doors, windows and when visitors arrive
- being able to rest while people move around the home
- loose-lead walking and responsiveness in busy environments
- comfortable handling of paws, mouth, ears and body

Train progressively with positive, reward-based methods and adjust the difficulty to the individual. The breed often learns quickly, which also means that barking, pulling or overexcitement can become established if it repeatedly leads to what the dog wants. Agility, rally obedience, tracking, nosework and other dog sports may suit the breed, but no particular activity is essential. What matters is a sustainable combination of cooperation, scent work, movement and recovery.

## Health

The Danish Swedish Farmdog is generally regarded as a healthy breed, but the description “healthy breed” is no substitute for checking the specific litter. Ask for registered results, dates and information about close relatives. The name of a test or a statement that the parents are health tested says too little without the actual results.

Hip dysplasia, HD, is an area in which old and current information is easily confused. The breed currently has a Swedish Kennel Club health programme at Level 1. This means that HD results can be recorded centrally, but radiography is not required for the puppies to be registered. According to the breed club, dogs with HD grade D or E or with clinical symptoms should not be used for breeding. An official result and, where available, an HD index still provide useful information about the hips specifically; they are not a certificate of the dog’s overall health.

For patellar luxation, the breed club’s current recommendations state that a dog affected by the condition or operated on for it should not be used for breeding. The recommendation does not, however, mean that all parents must have an official patella result. Ask both about examinations and about knee problems in the parents, siblings and previous offspring.

Primary lens luxation, PLL, is a serious eye disease associated with a mutation in the ADAMTS17 gene, and a validated DNA test is available for the breed. The breed club particularly recommends testing where there are carriers or untested close relatives in the line without a DNA-tested clear dog in between. According to the recommendation, a carrier may only be mated to a DNA-tested clear dog or one that is clear by descent, also known as hereditarily clear. A clear PLL result applies to this mutation; it does not rule out other eye problems or other diseases.

Before buying, it is reasonable to check:

- the parents’ identities and actual HD results, if they have been radiographed
- any patella examinations and the known family history
- PLL status and how the result fits with that of the other parent
- diseases, lameness, dental problems and temperament in close relatives
- that the breeder can explain both the strengths and uncertainties of the mating

## History & Origins

The Danish Swedish Farmdog is an old Scandinavian farm dog type but a comparatively recently recognised breed. Similar dogs lived on farms in Denmark and southern Sweden for a long time, where they controlled rats, raised the alarm when someone arrived and served as companions. Exactly how the type developed is not known. Links with pinschers and British white hunting terriers have been discussed, but should not be presented as a certain pedigree.

Before recognition, names including Scanian Terrier were used. At a Swedish survey in 1986, 107 dogs were brought together, contributing to the conclusion that the type was sufficiently consistent while also retaining useful genetic variation. Sweden and Denmark jointly recognised the breed in 1987 under the name Danish Swedish Farmdog.

The FCI granted the breed provisional international recognition in 2008 and definitive recognition in 2019. It was placed in Group 2 as a pinscher-type dog, not in the terrier group. Most are companion dogs today, but the urge to alert, interest in small rodents and strong desire to work make the breed’s history relevant even in a modern home.

## Living with the Breed

The Danish Swedish Farmdog is best suited to a home where companionship, activity and everyday training are a natural part of life. It can suit a first-time owner, but its compact size does not make the breed undemanding. The owner needs to appreciate a quick dog, be able to prevent chasing and alert barking, and be prepared to train calmness as carefully as energetic activities.

Interactions with children should always be supervised by an adult. The dog needs a resting place where it will not be disturbed, and children should not bother it when it is eating, sleeping or trying to move away. Assess the parents’ behaviour and the individual dog’s ability to break off play; the phrase “child-friendly breed” is not a guarantee of safety.

A Farmdog can live with a cat, but the outcome depends on the individuals and the introduction. Prevent the dog from chasing the cat, give the cat high places and clear escape routes, and keep the first meetings short and controlled. Small animals such as rabbits and rodents should be kept physically separate even if the dog appears calm under supervision.

Flat living can work if the dog gets outside, has opportunities to use its nose and learns not to alert at every sound in the building. A garden does not replace activity, and a large home does not solve being left alone. Begin alone-time training with very short periods when the dog is secure and calm, increase the time only when it can genuinely relax, and arrange other care if daily life requires longer absences than the dog can manage.

If possible, meet both parents or other adult relatives before deciding. Observe how they greet people, recover after a surprise, react to small animals and sounds, and settle after activity. That information, together with verifiable health data and a breeder who knows their lines, says more about daily life than general promises that the breed suits everyone.
