## Quick facts

The Yakutian Laika, known in Swedish as jakutskaja lajka, comes from Yakutia in northeastern Russia. The breed has a long history as a sled dog and hunting dog and is described as lively, friendly, and sociable. It needs regular opportunities to work and has a strong hunting instinct. An active, knowledgeable owner who enjoys training and spending time outdoors with their dog is best placed to meet its needs.

- **Size:** males stand 55–59 cm at the shoulder and females 53–57 cm. The FCI breed standard does not specify a weight range.
- **Activity level:** very high. The breed needs plenty of exercise and work and is particularly well suited to pulling activities.
- **Grooming:** a thick double coat that needs regular brushing, with extra attention when the undercoat sheds. Outside shedding periods, the coat is relatively easy to maintain.
- **Life expectancy:** the AKC gives approximately 10–12 years as a general breed estimate. Individual lifespans vary.
- **Best suited to:** an active, committed owner who can provide regular work, mental stimulation, and close companionship, and who can manage a dog with a strong hunting instinct.

Ask the breeder how their adult dogs perform at work, behave around other dogs, and fit into an ordinary home. Also ask what documented joint, hearing, and eye examinations are available. Good looks or a friendly breed description need to be backed up by knowledge of the individual dog and the proposed pairing.

## Appearance and coat

The Yakutian Laika is a medium-sized, strong, well-muscled dog with moderately long legs. Its body is slightly longer than its height at the shoulder and should give a compact, functional impression. The head is wedge-shaped, and the triangular ears are either erect or tipped over at the ends. The heavily coated tail is set high and may be carried in a curve over the back.

Males stand 55–59 cm at the shoulder and females 53–57 cm. The almond-shaped eyes may be dark brown, blue, or different colors; blue sections within a brown iris are also permitted. The coat is white with patches of various colors, or solid white. Neither a particular eye color nor a specific pattern of markings tells you how a dog behaves or how healthy it is.

The coat consists of straight, coarser guard hairs and a dense, well-developed undercoat. The hair is shorter on the head and the fronts of the legs, with more abundant hair around the neck, behind the legs, and on the tail. Brush the coat thoroughly on a regular basis, increasing the frequency during shedding. Ask the breeder to demonstrate tools and techniques that remove loose undercoat without making grooming uncomfortable for the dog.

Get your puppy used to being examined and groomed from an early age. Start with short sessions in which you feel over its body, lift a paw, and look inside its ears, rewarding calm cooperation. At the same time, make a habit of checking the skin, nails, and paw pads. With an active dog, it is helpful to spot chafing, wounds, and other changes before the next training session or outing.

## Temperament and personality

The breed standard describes a brave, lively, people-oriented, friendly, and sociable dog. It developed through close cooperation with people and may enjoy both shared activities and companionship at home. The AKC highlights its affectionate nature and versatility. Even so, an individual dog's confidence and outgoing nature need to be assessed on their own merits, ideally with the help of meetings with adult relatives.

Its background as a sled dog means that cooperation with other dogs has been important. Many enjoy canine company, but introductions still need to be controlled and take account of the individuals that will be living together. Ask the breeder how their dogs behave in different groups and when meeting other dogs. Sociability does not replace training or the need to give a dog peace and its own space.

A strong interest in hunting is a clear feature of the breed. A dog that is affectionate and responsive at home may become intensely focused on scents and movement outdoors. Build engagement and everyday routines early, and let your puppy experience new environments at a pace it can handle. Socialization should provide positive experiences with people and animals without involving unrestricted greetings or play in every situation.

## Training and exercise

Plan daily life around the dog's need to work. The Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) describes the breed as particularly suited to regular sled work, and sled dog sports offer a natural outlet for its abilities. Walks, hiking, and other shared activities can complement training. Ask the breeder or an experienced handler to show you how to introduce a young dog to a harness and pulling work, and how to develop the training as the dog matures.

Physical exercise needs to be combined with tasks that engage the dog's mind. Everyday obedience, search exercises, and learning new skills can provide variety, and the AKC mentions agility among the possible activities. Adapt the workload and difficulty to the individual dog's age, health, and fitness. The dense coat and high activity needs also mean that summer training must be planned around the temperature and opportunities to cool down.

Use clear cues and rewards the dog values. Start in quiet environments and gradually increase distractions, building a thoughtful foundation for engagement and recall. Its strong hunting instinct means you need to be able to maintain physical control when the surroundings require it. A successful training session without wildlife distractions does not tell you how the dog will react when an animal runs past.

## Health

The SKK emphasizes that the number of registered dogs in Sweden is too small to assess the breed's health reliably. This makes it especially important to examine the available information carefully before buying a puppy. Ask for documented examination results and information about parents, siblings, and previous offspring. A dog appearing lively, or the breed having a long working history, is no substitute for information about the health of that particular family.

Hips and elbows are discussed in health materials from the Russian national breed club, which cover X-ray examinations as part of breeding selection. Ask the breeder to show you the parents' official joint assessment results and explain how these were considered when planning the pairing. Recommendations from foreign breed clubs are not automatically Swedish registration requirements. Check the current requirements with the SKK and ask what documentation supports each claim about completed health checks.

Hearing is another topic to discuss. Deafness has been reported in the breed, and the breed club's materials cover hearing checks and BAER testing. A BAER test objectively assesses hearing function and can distinguish between hearing in one ear and hearing in both. Ask for the results for the dog that was tested. Do not judge hearing by blue eyes, coat color, or responses to sounds in everyday situations alone.

The breed club's materials also discuss clinical eye examinations and the limitations of genetic tests. Ask exactly what an eye examination certificate or DNA result covers and whether the test is relevant to the breed. A long list of tests is not the same as a comprehensive health assessment. Results, dates, and the dog's identity should be verifiable, and a veterinarian's assessment should guide decisions when vision or hearing problems are suspected.

## History and origins

The Yakutian Laika comes from Yakutia in northeastern Siberia, where dogs have long helped Indigenous people with transport and hunting. Breed sources describe how they also performed other everyday tasks, including helping with reindeer herding and transporting goods. Written records of the area's dogs date back to the 17th century, and a specific description of the dog type was published in 1843. Its history is closely tied to life and work in a harsh climate.

Formal organization around the modern breed is much more recent. Preservation efforts gained momentum during the 1990s, and the Russian kennel organization published a breed standard in 2005, based on an older sled dog standard. According to the SKK, the first individual was registered in Sweden in 2019. This combination of an old working dog type and relatively recent international breed organization makes documentation of working ability, health, and temperament particularly valuable as the breed becomes established in more countries.

## Living with the breed

The Yakutian Laika suits a lifestyle in which the dog can be involved and the owner wants to devote time to exercise and training. Plan for both working days and time off, and consider what activities you will offer throughout the seasons. The dog needs a balanced combination of activity, social contact, and rest. Ask the breeder to describe a typical week with an adult dog and compare it with your own life.

The breed is often described as affectionate toward its family, but children and dogs must always get to know each other safely. The dog's energy and size can be a lot for a small child to handle. Adults are responsible for managing interactions and should be present whenever young children are with the dog. Teach children to respect the dog's rest, food, and signals that it wants space.

Canine company may be welcome, but relationships with cats and other smaller animals need to be assessed with particular care because of the breed's hunting instinct. The AKC stresses that these encounters require supervision even with a sociable dog. Introduce the animals calmly and under control, and let previous experience and actual behavior guide how you proceed. Do not assume that a dog that gets along with a cat at home is also safe around unfamiliar cats outdoors.

Your living arrangements need to allow you to meet the dog's exercise and working needs every day. If you live in a building where sound carries easily, it is also wise to ask how vocal the dogs are. In a breed interview published by the Canadian Kennel Club, the Yakutian Laika is described as a dog that may use several different vocalizations, including howling. This is an account based on experience, not a measure of how vocal every individual will be.

Introduce time alone gradually, starting with very short periods when the dog feels secure. Build up according to its response, and arrange companionship or other supervision when needed. An interest in other dogs does not mean that just any canine companion will be a good match, or that human contact can be replaced entirely. The dog's social needs must also be met while you are working or occupied with other things.

Before buying, focus above all on three things: how you will meet the dog's need to work, how the breeder monitors health, and how the adult dogs behave in an ordinary home. Ideally, meet more than one individual and ask about both strengths and challenges. When the breed's drive to work and hunting instinct suit the household's circumstances, it can become an enthusiastic companion for an active life together.

## Quick facts

The East Siberian Laika, known in Swedish as östsibirisk lajka, is a versatile hunting dog from Russia. It combines a strong hunting drive with independence and a substantial need for work. The breed is primarily used for off-leash hunting and suits an owner with access to hunting grounds who wants to build a working partnership both in the field and at home.

- **Size:** males stand 57–64 cm at the withers and females 53–60 cm. The breed is powerfully built with well-developed muscles.
- **Activity level:** very high. It needs extensive physical and mental stimulation, along with opportunities to use its hunting abilities.
- **Grooming:** an easy-care double coat that needs brushing during shedding and bathing as required. The dense undercoat means recurring periods of more intensive grooming.
- **Life expectancy:** the kennel club and breed club sources reviewed do not provide a reliable breed-specific range. Ask the breeder about the lifespan and causes of death of older relatives.
- **Best suited to:** an active hunter with time for introducing the dog to hunting, fitness training and everyday obedience, who wants to live with an independent working dog.

Start your search for a puppy by describing the type of hunting you do and what the dog’s daily life will look like between hunting days. Ask the breeder to explain the parents’ working styles, hunting trial results and health screening results. A dog that suits one hunter or hunting ground may not be right for another, even when both are looking for the same breed.

## Appearance and coat

The East Siberian Laika is a strong, muscular spitz-type dog with substantial bone and a body slightly longer than it is tall. It has a broad, wedge-shaped head, erect ears and a tail carried curled or sickle-shaped over the back. Its expression should be friendly and alert, with oval, slightly slanted eyes in shades of brown.

Males stand 57–64 cm at the withers and females 53–60 cm. The FCI standard lists black and tan, black, black and white, white, and white with patches among the typical colours. Appearance varies within the breed, where hunting ability has long played a major role in breeding decisions. Its build and movement should enable it to work effectively across the terrain.

The coat consists of straight, coarse guard hairs over a soft, dense undercoat. Hair is more abundant around the neck and shoulders, while the head, ears and fronts of the legs have shorter hair. Brush out loose hair during shedding and bathe the dog when needed. Ask the breeder to show you how to work through the undercoat with suitable tools without pulling on the skin.

Make a physical check a routine part of finishing a woodland outing. Run your hands over the skin and legs, examine the paw pads and check that nothing is caught between the toes. Keep an eye on the nails, ears and mouth as well. Calm handling from an early age makes care easier and helps you spot ticks, wounds or other changes before they become bigger problems.

## Temperament and personality

The breed standard describes an even-tempered, balanced dog that is friendly and trusting towards people. At the same time, it has a strong hunting drive and works independently in the forest. These traits can coexist in the same dog: one that enjoys family company may work a long way from its handler when searching for game. Assess both everyday behaviour and working style before buying a puppy.

Courage, energy and the ability to handle demanding hunting situations are important parts of the breed’s background. The Swedish Laika Club also highlights willingness to cooperate as an important quality. For owners, this means building the relationship through shared experiences and clear training. Independence when hunting does not make everyday obedience any less important, and the dog’s desire to work needs a carefully planned outlet.

Try to meet adult dogs and ask how they behave with visitors, when encountering other dogs and during handling. The UKC notes that conflicts with other dogs, particularly those of the same sex, can occur; each dog needs to be assessed individually. Give your puppy positive experiences in different environments and calm encounters, without expecting it to want to greet or play with everyone.

## Training and exercise

The East Siberian Laika needs a daily routine built around its role as a hunting dog. The Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) stresses that the breed is not suitable solely as a companion and that its owner should have access to hunting grounds. Ordinary walks and occasional outings therefore do not meet the full range of its needs. Plan for an introduction to hunting, regular work and physical conditioning, including during periods when you are not hunting.

Build a foundation of engagement, recall, lead walking, handling and the ability to wait calmly. Use rewards the dog values, and begin training in situations where it has a good chance of succeeding. Then gradually increase distractions. Its hunting drive means you must be able to keep it secure wherever it should not be searching for game; a reliable recall at home needs to be developed further in much more challenging environments.

Woodland walks, tracking and gradually developed fitness training can complement hunting. The breed is also used for pulling and carrying packs, but the workload needs to suit the dog’s age, health and training experience. Seek advice from the breeder or an experienced handler when planning a young dog’s development. Balance activity with recovery and adjust sessions to the weather and temperature, particularly when the dog is working hard.

## Health

The SKK describes the breed as generally healthy but notes that hip dysplasia (HD) occurs. For puppies to be registered in Sweden, both parents must have an official hip assessment before mating. The breed is also subject to specific rules on breeding from dogs affected by HD. Ask for registration numbers and check results in the SKK database, along with information about siblings and previous offspring.

Elbow dysplasia (ED) is addressed in the Swedish Laika Club’s breeding strategy. It recommends litters from parents that have been X-rayed before mating with a result of ED 0, meaning no detectable changes. Distinguish between the club’s recommendations and the SKK’s registration rules, and ask the breeder to explain how the proposed pairing has been assessed. Good results do not remove the need for follow-up as the dog grows and begins working.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is another issue to discuss. The breed club and specialist club have reported glaucoma in the East Siberian Laika, and the disease can cause pain and loss of vision. Ask about eye problems in the family, which clinical examinations have been carried out and what DNA results are available. A general assurance that the line is healthy is less informative than documented results and a clear medical history.

POAG test results require careful interpretation. The breed club provides information about testing for a variant in ADAMTS10, but in May 2026 the SKK requested further scientific evidence to validate the test specifically for this breed. A DNA result alone should therefore not be treated as equivalent to a clinical eye diagnosis. Check the latest guidance from the SKK and the breed club, and have any suspected eye problems assessed by a veterinarian.

## History and origins

The East Siberian Laika developed from local hunting dogs in central and eastern Siberia, where forests and mountains placed considerable demands on their work. The FCI describes Tungus, Yakut, pre-Baikal and Amur-related Laika types among its ancestors. The dogs were used to hunt various kinds of game, and the breed’s versatility as a hunting dog remains an important part of its identity.

The breed gained separate breed status in 1947 and a provisional standard in 1949. The FCI recognised it in 1980; the historical summary in the standard also states that a definitive standard was approved in 1981. The first East Siberian Laika was imported into Sweden in 1978. There, work with game including moose, wild boar and predators has become particularly important, and hunting trials are used to document qualities worth preserving.

## Living with the breed

The most important consideration before buying is whether hunting and everyday life will fit together. Think through how often the dog will work, how you will maintain its fitness and who will look after it when you are busy. Talk to the breeder about both the hunting season and the rest of the year. Access to woodland is valuable, but it needs to be combined with a concrete plan for the dog’s work.

An East Siberian Laika may enjoy close family contact while also having a strong desire to work. Children and dogs should get to know each other under adult supervision, and an adult should be present whenever young children interact with the dog. Provide a resting place where the dog can be left undisturbed, and teach children to respect its meals, rest and signals that it wants space. Ask how the parents behave at home.

Other dogs and smaller pets require carefully managed introductions. The breed was developed to hunt different kinds of game, so do not assume that friendliness towards people means cats or small animals will be safe around it. Use distance and separation where necessary, and let the dog’s actual behaviour guide your decisions. Also ask the breeder about relationships between adult dogs and how any conflicts are handled.

Your home’s location needs to work for both training and the surrounding community. Barking is a working tool for a hunting dog that holds game at bay, but barking during a hunt does not tell you exactly how vocal an individual will be at home. If sound carries easily in your home, it is wise to ask about everyday barking and establish calm routines around noises and visitors. A garden provides space but does not replace working alongside the handler.

Introduce time alone in small steps once the puppy feels secure at home. Begin with short periods and increase them according to the dog’s response, while arranging care when it needs company. Independence when hunting shows how a dog works with game; it does not tell you how long it can cope with being alone. Assess that part of daily life separately.

Above all, choose a breeder who can explain their breeding goals and show how health, temperament and hunting ability are monitored. Read the parents’ results and discuss what they mean for the type of hunting you want to do. When the breed’s qualities suit the owner’s experience, hunting grounds and daily life, there is a strong foundation for a lasting partnership with a willing and versatile hunting companion.

## Quick Facts

The Chow Chow is a Chinese spitz breed with a calm, independent manner, a blue-black tongue and two coat varieties. It is seldom a dog that tries to please everyone, but it can become deeply loyal to its family. Above all, a prospective owner should value a dog with a mind of its own and be prepared to teach handling, everyday manners and social confidence without harsh methods.

- **Breed classification:** FCI number 205, Group 5, Asian Spitz and related breeds
- **Origin:** China, with Great Britain as the breed's patron country under the FCI
- **Original use:** guarding and hunting; now kept mainly as a companion
- **Height at the withers:** 48–56 cm for males and 46–51 cm for females
- **Coat:** rough or smooth, both dense
- **Typical temperament:** calm, loyal, independent and reserved

The breed standard does not give an official weight range. Body condition, build and unrestricted movement therefore tell you more than a single number on the scales. A large UK study found a median lifespan of 12.1 years, but that is a population result, not a prediction for one particular dog.

## Appearance & Coat

A Chow Chow should be compact and balanced, not excessively heavy or immobile. The broad skull, small ears, ruff and high-set tail create the characteristic lion-like outline. The tongue should be blue-black. The eyes should be clean and clearly visible; the characteristic scowl must not be produced by loose, wrinkled skin that interferes with the eyes.

The breed's short, pendulum-like stride is distinctive, but a healthy Chow Chow should still move freely and soundly, with good endurance. Stiff or laboured movement, or hind legs that buckle or overextend, should not be dismissed as “normal for the breed”. When visiting a breeder, watch both the parents and the puppy move at an easy pace if possible.

The rough-coated variety has a dense, straight, stand-off outer coat with a soft undercoat and a pronounced ruff. The smooth-coated variety has a shorter, upright, dense coat without feathering. Accepted colours are self-coloured black, red, blue, fawn, cream or white, often with lighter shading but without patches of another colour.

Brush the coat regularly, working right down to the skin. Once a week is often enough outside the moulting periods, while loose undercoat may need more frequent attention during a moult. Check particularly behind the ears, through the ruff, under the forelegs and around the breeches. Teach the puppy early to stand calmly for brushing and to have its feet, skin and ears examined.

Under the breed standard, clipping or trimming that alters the natural outline is not permitted, apart from tidying the feet. This is a rule about how the breed should be presented, not a ban on a vet clipping the coat when an examination or treatment requires it. Medical needs should be guided by the dog's welfare and veterinary advice.

## Temperament & Personality

A typical Chow Chow is calm, loyal and independent, and often neutral or aloof with strangers. Reserve means that the dog may keep its distance without losing control. Persistent attempts to escape, an inability to recover after a fright or threatening lunges should not be dismissed as normal reserve.

The breed does not always seek contact and often prefers to choose when to interact. Clear routines and respectful handling therefore matter. Do not crowd an unsure dog, and do not let unfamiliar people lean over it or reach for its face. Instead, reward calm curiosity and make sure the dog can move away. Seek help from a suitably qualified trainer or behaviourist if fear or threatening behaviour becomes a recurring pattern.

Historical hunting use does not tell you how strong an individual Chow Chow's prey drive will be today. The same applies to relationships with other dogs, cats and small animals. Calm, carefully managed introductions and the individual dog's previous experience are more useful than a fixed breed rule. Use a lead or a gate at the first meetings and end the interaction before either animal feels trapped.

## Training & Exercise

A Chow Chow needs daily walks, opportunities to explore and regular mental activity, but there is no well-founded number of minutes that suits every dog. Adjust activity to age, health, fitness, weather and recovery. A suitable level allows the dog to move willingly, settle afterwards and avoid laboured breathing or lingering stiffness.

Independence does not mean an unwillingness to learn. Training works best when the reward matters to that particular dog and the task is easy to understand. Use food, play, scent work or permission to investigate something interesting. Reward-based training should be the default; lead jerks, intimidation and physical dominance can damage both welfare and trust.

Prioritise skills that make everyday life safer:

- practise recall in a secure area and use a long line wherever off-lead exercise would not be safe
- reward walking on a loose lead before the dog has a chance to pull hard
- break handling into small steps: one paw, a brief brush or a quick eye check at a time
- teach the dog to stand willingly and make sure a release cue really ends the exercise

Vary ordinary walks with search games, scent trails and short problem-solving tasks. Heavy physical exertion is not an aim in itself. Stop the activity and investigate the cause if the dog's movement changes, it begins to lag behind or its breathing becomes noisy.

## Health

The main health priorities in the Chow Chow concern the eyes, breathing, skin and musculoskeletal system. Inward-turning eyelids, known as entropion, can irritate the cornea and cause pain. Excess facial skin must not make the eye openings small or cause watery, narrowed or irritated eyes. Knee and cruciate-ligament injuries, as well as hip and elbow dysplasia, are also addressed in the breed's health work. Skin disorders and breathing difficulties are other areas to monitor.

When choosing a puppy, look at function as well as certificates. Check that the dogs can move freely, have open, comfortable eyes and breathe quietly and without effort both at rest and after light activity. Ask about eye, skin, knee and breathing problems in close relatives, and request the parents' official hip (HD) and elbow (ED) results. The Swedish Kennel Club calculates both HD and ED indices for the Chow Chow, so the combined results across the family are more informative than one letter or number.

The Swedish Kennel Club's 2026 registration rules do not set a breed-specific compulsory requirement for HD, ED or eye results in the Chow Chow. That does not make those issues unimportant. It means buyers need to distinguish a formal registration condition from voluntary health information that supports a considered breeding and purchasing decision. Ask the breeder which examinations were carried out, why they were chosen and how results across the family influenced the mating.

The Chow Chow is among the breeds with an increased risk of heatstroke, and its dense coat can make cooling more difficult. There is no single safe temperature for every dog. Exercise during cooler parts of the day, provide shade and water, and watch the dog's breathing. Heavy panting at rest, lethargy, drooling, confusion, an unsteady gait or collapse are warning signs. If heatstroke is suspected, begin cooling the dog with water and contact a vet immediately.

The UK lifespan study included 940 Chow Chows and found a median of 12.1 years, with a 95% confidence interval of 11.7–12.5 years. The result describes the UK population studied and cannot predict the lifespan of an individual dog in Sweden.

## History & Origins

The Chow Chow has documented roots in China and is described in the FCI breed standard as having been known there for more than 2,000 years. Dogs of this type were used for guarding and hunting, among other roles.

Dogs of the type began to attract attention outside China around 1800. Great Britain then played a major part in describing and developing the modern breed. British breeding became established in the late nineteenth century, and the Chow Chow attracted particular attention at Crufts in 1925. This is why the FCI records China as the country of origin and Great Britain as the patron country.

## Living with the Breed

A Chow Chow can live in either a flat or a house if daily life provides enough activity, rest and care. A calm indoor manner does not guarantee that the dog will thrive without walks, training or company. Plan for coat care, a cool place on warm days and a secure resting area where the dog will not be disturbed.

Adults must always manage interactions in a family with children. Young children and dogs must not be left alone together, and the dog needs a resting place that the children respect. Teach children not to hug, climb on or disturb the dog while it is eating or sleeping. Assess the individual dog's confidence instead of assuming that the breed name guarantees a particular response.

Independence does not mean that the breed automatically copes well with being left alone. Begin once the dog feels secure at home, leave for a very short time and increase the duration only while it remains relaxed. Some trained adult dogs manage a few hours, while others become worried much sooner. A camera can help you see whether the dog rests or shows signs of stress when no one is there.

The Chow Chow can be a good fit for a home that values quiet companionship, clear boundaries and a dog that is not always motivated by praise. The practical question is not whether the owner has had a dog before, but whether daily life allows for patient, reward-based training, regular coat and health checks, and respect for the dog's need for both social security and personal space.

## Quick Facts

The Maltese is a small companion dog suited to someone who wants a close, alert companion and has plenty of time for coat care. The breed may enjoy long walks and play as much as quiet time on a lap. Its small size does not mean that it simply wants to be carried, although it does call for gentle handling.

- **Origin and home country:** the central Mediterranean and Italy
- **Breed group:** Group 9, companion and toy dogs
- **Size:** males 21–25 cm and females 20–23 cm at the withers
- **Weight:** 3–4 kg under the breed standard
- **Coat:** long, straight, white and silky, with no undercoat
- **A good match for:** someone seeking a lively little companion who is ready for regular coat, dental and general care

A Maltese can suit a first-time owner, but a newcomer must still be prepared to learn about grooming and work on time alone, house training and everyday manners from the outset. Before choosing the breed, ask yourself whether you genuinely want to care for its coat almost every day for many years.

## Appearance & Coat

The Maltese is a small, elegant dog whose body is longer than it is tall. A full show coat falls long and straight down the body. The breed standard describes a dense, glossy, silky coat without an undercoat. It should be pure white, although a slight ivory shade is permitted.

A long Maltese coat needs combing and brushing every day, or at least every other day, to stop small tangles developing into mats. The white coat also needs regular bathing, but the right interval depends on coat length, daily life and how dirty the dog gets. Work through the coat methodically down to the skin, paying particular attention to areas where friction readily causes knots.

Many pet Maltese are clipped shorter than the show ideal. A shorter coat may make grooming quicker, but it does not remove the need to check the skin, eyes, ears, nails and teeth. Ask the breeder to demonstrate how the individual dog's coat should be combed, washed and dried. Gradually teach the puppy to stand still, accept handling and allow its paws, mouth and face to be examined. This makes routine care less stressful for both dog and owner.

The Maltese is sometimes described as allergy-friendly because it has no undercoat. That is misleading: no dog is free of allergens, which are found mainly in the skin and saliva. Reactions also differ between individual dogs, including those of the same breed. Anyone with an allergy should therefore seek advice about their own circumstances from a healthcare professional rather than relying on a breed name or coat type.

## Temperament & Personality

The breed ideal is a lively, affectionate, calm and intelligent companion. Many Maltese pay close attention to their owner, enjoy learning small tasks and readily alternate between activity and quiet company. They are engaged companions, not ornaments without needs of their own.

A breed description cannot guarantee how an individual dog will react to strangers, other dogs or unfamiliar places. A Swedish breed-club owner survey covered 247 dogs and recorded varied social responses. Only 13 Maltese had completed Sweden's official Behaviour and Personality Assessment during the period reported, too few to draw firm conclusions about the breed as a whole.

Do not assume that every Maltese will be quiet, welcoming to everyone or automatically easy around other animals. Ask the breeder how the puppy's parents behave in daily life: with visitors, when meeting other dogs, when handled, around noise and when resting. Calm exposure to different people and settings, together with clear routines, is more useful than broad labels such as ‘barky’ or ‘always friendly’.

## Training & Exercise

The Maltese needs physical activity and mental engagement every day, but the same number of minutes will not suit every dog. A healthy adult may enjoy longer walks, scent games, trick training and play. Adjust pace and distance to age, fitness, weather and recovery. Build a puppy's exercise up gradually. If a dog becomes stiff, lame or unusually tired, reduce the load; persistent signs should be assessed by a vet.

When teaching something new, finish while the dog is still able to concentrate rather than following a fixed session length. Reward the behaviour you want and practise useful everyday skills: recall, walking on a lead, relaxing in a designated place, accepting handling and settling after alerting you to something.

House training is a learning process, not a test of the breed's intelligence or stubbornness. Take the puppy out frequently, especially after sleep, food and play, and reward success. Time alone must also be introduced gradually once the puppy feels secure at home. A young puppy cannot be left alone, and an adult dog's ability will depend on its training and temperament. Start with very brief, uneventful separations and increase them only while the dog remains relaxed.

## Health

The Maltese is generally described as a healthy breed, although patellar luxation and umbilical hernia can occur. Patellar luxation means that the kneecap can move out of its normal position; lameness or a recurring skipping step warrants veterinary assessment.

The Swedish breed club's breeding strategy records 40 registered patella examinations in 2012–2021. This is a small, selected sample and does not show how common the condition is across all Maltese. Instead, ask the breeder to show any official patella results for the parents and discuss knee problems or umbilical hernias among close relatives. The Maltese has no breed-specific compulsory health examination under the Swedish Kennel Club's special registration rules for 2026. A voluntary result can still provide useful information; voluntary does not mean unimportant.

Watery eyes and staining beneath them, often called tear staining, were reported for many dogs in the breed club's owner survey. The survey report describes the staining as cosmetic while noting that its cause has not been established. The colour alone is therefore not a diagnosis. Keep the area clean and dry, but seek veterinary advice if the eye becomes red, the dog squints or rubs it, or there is discharge or another clear new change.

Check the eyes, movement, skin and mouth regularly. Introduce tooth brushing while the dog is young, keeping all handling calm and predictable. A long list of possible small-dog conditions is less informative than documented results, the dog's own signs and what is actually known about the health of close relatives.

## History & Origins

The Maltese name does not prove that the breed comes from the island of Malta. The official standard gives the central Mediterranean as its place of origin and Italy as its home country. It links the name to a Semitic word for harbour or refuge, found in several place names around the Mediterranean.

Ancestors of the breed lived in ports and coastal towns, where they hunted rats and mice in warehouses and ships' holds. Small dogs called *canes melitenses* were mentioned in Aristotle's time. Similar dogs later became valued companions in ancient Rome and appear beside fashionable figures in Renaissance paintings. The breed's history therefore includes both practical work in ports and a long role as a companion.

The first documented Maltese in Sweden was a female imported from England in 1910 and shown in Stockholm in 1911. Today's breed is primarily a companion dog, although individual dogs may also enjoy activities such as obedience, tracking or agility at a suitable level.

## Living with the Breed

A Maltese can live happily in a flat if given walks, mental activity, company and training around everyday sounds. A compact home does not lessen these daily needs, and a small dog should not spend its day being carried. It needs opportunities to walk, sniff, choose where to rest and use its body safely.

Adult supervision matters around children. At only 3–4 kg, the dog is safer when play takes place at floor level, lifting is gentle and it has a bed where it will not be disturbed. Children should leave the dog alone while it is eating or sleeping. Whether a Maltese gets along with other dogs, cats or small pets depends on the individual, previous experience and careful introductions; breed alone cannot provide a guarantee.

Make an honest assessment of daily life before buying:

- Can someone groom the dog almost every day and start tooth brushing and handling practice straight away?
- How do the parents behave with visitors, other dogs, rest and brief separations?
- Are official patella results available, and what does the breeder know about knees, umbilical hernias and eye problems in the family?
- Can you see the registration documents and meet the mother in her usual surroundings?
- Can you arrange care while the puppy is still too young to be left alone?

The Maltese is best suited to someone who appreciates its blend of affection, liveliness and willingness to learn, while accepting the extensive care and individual variation behind its elegant white appearance.

Maltese

The Maltese is a small, sturdy companion dog with a long, white silky coat and expressive dark eyes. Affectionate and people oriented, it adapts well to apartments with daily walks. It needs regular grooming, dental care and gentle training, and often enjoys a long, active life.

## Quick Facts

The Welsh Corgi Pembroke is a small but powerful herding and cattle dog that is now kept mainly as an active companion. It is best suited to someone who wants to combine walks with everyday training, scent work or other forms of mental activity.

- Height at the withers: approximately 25–30 centimetres
- Breed-standard weight: 10–12 kilograms for males and 9–11 kilograms for females
- Country of origin: Great Britain, with the breed’s working history rooted in Wales
- Coat: a medium-length double coat that sheds, particularly during heavier seasonal moults
- Temperament: the ideal is a bold, alert and friendly dog, but individuals vary considerably
- Lifespan: the Swedish breed club describes many dogs as reaching 12–14 years, although health and longevity vary

The Pembroke and the Welsh Corgi Cardigan are two separate breeds, not varieties of the same breed. They differ in features such as size, colour and tail. Do not choose between them on the strength of simplistic claims that one is always calmer or more sociable.

## Appearance & Coat

The Welsh Corgi Pembroke should be low-set, strong and sturdily built without appearing heavy or restricted. The body is medium in length, the chest is broad and deep, and the ears are upright. Despite its short legs, a healthy Pembroke should move freely and actively.

The breed standard gives an approximate height of 25–30 centimetres, a weight of 10–12 kilograms for males and 9–11 kilograms for females. These figures are guidelines, not the correct target weight for every dog. Body condition and muscle mass must also be considered.

The coat has straight, medium-length outer hair and a dense undercoat. Permitted colours are red, sable, fawn, and black and tan. They may appear with or without white on the legs, chest and neck; a small amount of white on the head and muzzle is also allowed.

Older descriptions can give the impression that every Pembroke has a short tail. In fact, puppies may be born with a full tail or a natural bobtail of varying length. Tail docking is prohibited in Sweden unless it is medically necessary. A docked dog is therefore not Swedish-bred, so its origin and import documents should be checked carefully.

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan is generally a little taller, has a long, fox-like tail and comes in a wider range of permitted colours. Colour or personality cannot identify the breed reliably; the pedigree establishes which breed the dog belongs to.

The coat does not require trimming. Brush it regularly and brush through the undercoat when shedding increases. This removes loose hair and makes changes in the skin easier to spot. Bathe the dog when it is dirty rather than to a fixed timetable. Calmly accustom the puppy to brushing, nail care and tooth brushing.

## Temperament & Personality

The breed ideal is a bold, workmanlike, outgoing and friendly dog. However, the Swedish Kennel Club’s current BPH behaviour analysis shows considerable variation among the dogs assessed. Some greet strangers enthusiastically, while others show much less interest. A breed description therefore cannot predict exactly how any particular puppy will develop.

The Pembroke’s background as a farm and cattle dog is often reflected in watchfulness, quick reactions and an ability to make its own decisions. Many enjoy working with their owner, but some need more practice to choose the handler over events in their surroundings. This can make the breed rewarding to train, although everyday cooperation should not be taken for granted.

The Swedish Kennel Club highlights possible tendencies to guard, bark and nip at heels. The last of these is linked to the breed’s historical work close to the hind legs of cattle, but herding behaviour is not identical in every dog. Nipping at running children, feet or trouser legs should still be stopped early. Reward calm contact, attentiveness and choosing an appropriate task instead.

Vocal behaviour also varies. A Pembroke may react to sounds at the door, movement outside a window or anticipation, but the breed name alone does not determine whether barking will become a problem. Ask how the puppy’s parents and close relatives behave at home. Establish calm routines around the door, visitors and rest from the outset.

For a family with children, the right individual and a well-managed routine matter more than the label “family dog”. Dogs and young children should always have an adult present, and the dog needs a resting place where it will be left undisturbed.

## Training & Exercise

The Welsh Corgi Pembroke needs physical exercise and mental activity every day, but a fixed number of minutes or miles will not suit every dog. Age, health, fitness and what the walk involves all matter more than a standard timetable.

A good daily routine includes walks with time to sniff, short training sessions and a task that requires concentration, such as searching for food, tracking or learning practical skills. Balance calm activities with movement and planned rest. A dog that runs a great deal but never learns to settle may still find it difficult to relax.

Start early with recall, loose-lead walking, impulse control and a calm cue that interrupts barking or nipping. Reward-based training makes the desired choice clear to the dog. Keep sessions focused and finish while the dog is still engaged rather than repeating the same exercise until interest fades.

The breed may enjoy obedience, rally, tracking, scent work and agility. Choose an activity to suit the individual dog’s body and motivation. Not every Pembroke has herding ability simply because the breed historically worked cattle; these qualities must be assessed in the individual.

Short legs are not a reason to treat a healthy adult dog as fragile. Build fitness and muscle gradually and provide good grip on slippery floors. Adjust exercise for puppies, older dogs and dogs recovering from injury. Sudden pain, reluctance to move, lameness or weakness calls for veterinary assessment, not blanket advice about stairs or ramps.

## Health

The Swedish breeding strategy describes the Welsh Corgi Pembroke as a generally healthy breed, but buyers should still check hips, eyes and documented health in the family. It is important to distinguish between registration requirements, breed-club advice and DNA tests that happen to be available.

Since January 2025, the Swedish Kennel Club has required both parents to have an official hip status before mating if their puppies are to be registered. Ask to see the results and how the breeder evaluated the proposed pairing; “X-rayed” does not mean that the result was clear.

Svenska Welsh Corgi Klubben, the Swedish breed club, also recommends that breeding dogs have an eye examination before mating. Ask for current results for both parents and about eye findings in close relatives. The club also monitors lameness and premature closure of the ulna, known as short ulna, which can cause the front leg to develop abnormally. A young dog with an increasingly turned-out foot, a curved foreleg or lameness should be examined promptly by a vet.

DNA tests for degenerative myelopathy, or DM, and von Willebrand disease type 1 are available for the breed, but their results must be interpreted correctly. The current Swedish breeding strategy describes the DM test as a risk test and does not recommend routine testing, because it does not give the complete clinical picture and the disease has not been documented as a major problem among Swedish dogs. For vWD type 1, the breed club withdrew its previous routine-testing advice after a review with the Swedish Kennel Club’s DNA group. A laboratory result does not in itself prove that a dog is ill or will become ill. Ask the breeder why a test was performed and how its result was balanced against other aspects of health and genetic diversity.

Keep the dog at a healthy body condition throughout life. A clear waist should be visible from above, and the ribs should be easy to feel with light pressure. Weigh the dog regularly, but do not let the figures in the breed standard replace a proper body-condition assessment. Consult a vet if weight changes without a clear reason or the dog needs a structured weight-loss programme.

## History & Origins

The Welsh Corgi Pembroke developed in Wales as a farm and herding dog, but its earliest origins have not been conclusively established. Theories involving Flemish weavers, Nordic spitz-type dogs and a relationship with the Swedish Vallhund should be treated as theories rather than settled history.

Its documented work on Welsh farms explains the breed more clearly. Pembrokes helped move cattle to and from barns, guarded farms and performed several other duties. As heelers, they drove cattle while working close to the animals’ hind legs. The task demanded alertness, mobility and determination, as well as both independence and cooperation.

Pembrokes and Cardigans developed their own distinctive features in Wales but were long treated collectively as Welsh Corgis. They were separated into two breeds in 1934. The FCI lists the Welsh Corgi Pembroke as breed number 39 in Group 1 for sheepdogs and cattle dogs.

In Sweden, Pembrokes live almost entirely as companion dogs, although some still herd. Their working heritage is more often expressed through dog sports, scent work and an everyday life in which they solve tasks with their owner.

## Living with the Breed

A Welsh Corgi Pembroke can live in a flat, terraced house or detached home if its routine provides enough activity, rest and companionship. Its low height does not make it inactive, and a garden cannot replace walks or training. In a flat, it is particularly important to work early on calm responses to sounds in shared areas, movement outside windows and activity at the door.

Time alone must be introduced gradually. Begin with very brief periods and increase them only while the dog remains relaxed. Puppies and anxious dogs need particular care. Dogs also need to be taken out regularly during the day, so anyone working long hours must plan for company and daytime walks.

The breed can live with other dogs or cats, but compatibility depends on the individuals and the introduction. Give a cat dog-free places and a clear escape route, keep early meetings controlled and prevent chasing. Small pets should be protected from stress and physical contact. Previous experience with another species is useful information, but it cannot guarantee the next relationship.

The Pembroke can suit a first-time owner who enjoys training and can be consistent without using harsh methods. It is less suitable for someone who wants a dog content with very short walks, that sheds little, or that will automatically be quiet and compliant.

The breed has grown markedly in Sweden. Careful checks become even more important as a breed gains popularity. Meet the breeder and the puppy’s mother, and verify registration, microchip details, the veterinary examination certificate and official health results. If the dog is imported or has a docked tail, its origin and import documents should be clear. A sound decision rests on records, open answers and how the dogs actually behave, not photographs or promises of a particular temperament.

## Quick Facts

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small British terrier kept primarily as a companion, but it should still be alert, intelligent and spirited, with an even temperament.

- The breed is recognised by the FCI as British terrier number 86, in Group 3 and the Toy Terrier section.
- The breed standard sets a maximum weight of 3.2 kg but no minimum weight or height at the withers. In practice, many dogs are heavier than the standard maximum.
- “Teacup” is not an official Yorkshire Terrier size category. The label therefore cannot guarantee a dog’s adult size or health.
- The coat should be straight, glossy, fine and silky. A long coat requires considerable care; clipping it short reduces the work but does not make it maintenance-free.
- The clearest documented health priorities are the teeth, retained deciduous teeth and patellar luxation, or slipping kneecaps.

## Appearance & Coat

The Yorkshire Terrier should be compact, neat and well proportioned, with an upright carriage and free movement. It may be very small, but it should not look fragile or exaggeratedly miniaturised.

The 3.2 kg maximum describes the show standard’s ideal, not a promise for every adult dog. The standard gives no height at the withers. SKK reports that most dogs are around 20–25 cm and that many weigh more than the standard maximum; even puppies in the same litter can reach different adult sizes. A puppy buyer should therefore ask for the actual weights of the parents and adult relatives rather than rely on terms such as “mini” or “teacup”.

The standard adult coat is dark steel blue over the body and clear golden tan on areas including the head and chest. The hair should be straight and glossy with a fine, silky texture, not woolly. Puppies are born black and tan, and the steel-blue adult colour develops gradually. The pace at which colour and texture mature varies, so a puppy coat cannot show exactly what the adult dog will look like.

A long coat needs frequent, thorough combing all the way to the skin, particularly where the hair is exposed to friction. Many companion dogs are clipped short for an easier routine. This makes bathing, drying and detangling less time-consuming, but the dog still needs brushing and must learn to accept handling around the face, ears, feet and nails. The coat has no undercoat, which can also mean that the dog needs protection in cold, wet weather.

The Yorkshire Terrier is sometimes described as suitable for people with allergies because it sheds little visible hair. That is misleading as a guarantee: no dog is allergen-free, and dog allergens come from sources including saliva and skin cells. Anyone who has or suspects an animal allergy should seek medical advice before getting a dog.

A tricoloured Biewer Terrier is not a special Yorkshire Terrier colour. In Sweden and the other Nordic countries, the Biewer Terrier is treated as a separate breed, despite its close historical relationship with the Yorkshire Terrier. It is not, however, recognised by the FCI.

## Temperament & Personality

The Yorkshire Terrier is generally attentive, curious and ready to act, rather than a passive lapdog. The breed standard emphasises intelligence, spirit and an even disposition, but sociability, barking and interest in chasing vary between dogs and are influenced by upbringing and training.

Its quick response to sounds and movement can make the breed inclined to sound the alarm. That does not mean every dog barks excessively. A dog that is allowed to investigate its surroundings calmly, rewarded for quiet behaviour and taught to settle is better equipped to handle sounds at the door and movement outside a window. Simply interrupting barking without changing its cause rarely creates a sustainable routine.

The terrier background may show as an interest in toys, scents and small animals. Recall and the ability to disengage from something exciting therefore need training, even with a dog that is easy to pick up. Living with a cat or another dog depends more on the individual, the introduction and daily routines than on a simple yes-or-no verdict for the breed.

With children, the small body is the most important practical consideration. A child must be able to let the dog move away, play at floor level and refrain from carrying or chasing it. Contact with young children should be supervised. The same care is needed during play with much larger dogs, because friendly but physical play can still be too rough for a Yorkshire Terrier.

## Training & Exercise

The Yorkshire Terrier needs daily physical and mental activity, but there is no meaningful number of minutes that suits every dog. A good day includes several toilet outings, walks with time to sniff, play, simple problem-solving and training in which the dog can succeed.

Adapt the amount and intensity to age, fitness, weather and the individual. It is more useful to observe how the dog functions in everyday life and adjust one thing at a time than to chase a generic number of minutes.

Reward-based training suits the breed’s quick understanding. Prioritise engagement, recall, loose-lead skills, a calm resting place and an alternative behaviour when the dog wants to alert. Also practise grooming, showing the teeth and nail care in small steps. This makes everyday care safer and reduces the need to restrain the dog.

Socialisation does not mean that a puppy must greet everyone. It needs calm, positive experiences of people, dogs, surfaces, traffic and household sounds without being pressured. The breed may also enjoy scent work, rally obedience, tracking, tricks or agility adapted to its size. The particular activity matters less than giving the dog ways to use both body and mind.

## Health

The Yorkshire Terrier is relatively long-lived as a population, but the teeth and knee joints deserve particular attention. SKK highlights dental calculus, retained deciduous teeth and patellar luxation as issues to know about.

A British study published in 2025 reviewed the records of 3,308 Yorkshire Terriers attending general veterinary practices during 2016. Periodontal disease was the most common specific diagnosis and was recorded in 21.1 per cent during the study year. Retained deciduous teeth were recorded in 3.57 per cent, and the researchers also identified patellar luxation as a breed predisposition. The figures describe a British study group during a defined period, not the risk for a particular Swedish dog, but they make dental care a clear everyday priority.

Start getting the puppy accustomed to tooth brushing early. Daily tooth brushing is the best practical protection against plaque and calculus, but training should be built without force. Ask a veterinarian to check the transition to adult teeth if deciduous teeth remain as the permanent teeth erupt or if the dog appears to have a painful mouth.

Ask the breeder to explain what is known about teeth, bite and knee joints in the parents and close relatives. Ask whether the parents have been examined for patellar luxation and request documented results if available. A single test can reduce uncertainty but can never guarantee a healthy puppy.

There is no universal, permanent Yorkshire Terrier test package across all kennel clubs. Before buying or breeding, check the current Swedish registration rules and recommendations from SKK and the breed club rather than relying on an old list found online.

In the British study, the median age at death was 13.56 years, supporting the picture of a long-lived breed. This is a population measure, not a forecast for an individual. Body condition, oral health, movement, behavioural changes and regular veterinary care need attention throughout life.

## History & Origins

The Yorkshire Terrier developed in northern England during the 1800s and took shape in Yorkshire’s textile districts. From the 1850s, weavers and wool-mill workers bred very small, soft-coated terriers that retained the terrier’s interest in hunting and also became sought-after companion dogs.

The breed’s exact recipe is not securely documented. The old Black and Tan Terrier, together with the Maltese, Dandie Dinmont Terrier and Skye Terrier, are mentioned as probable contributors. It is therefore more accurate to speak of likely ancestors than to name a definite cross.

The breed name was accepted around 1870, and the Yorkshire Terrier was recognised as a breed in 1886. During the later 1800s, it moved from the small terriers of working communities to a modern companion and show dog. The rat-catching story has a reasonable basis in the terrier background and the breed standard’s description of hunting instinct, but not every early dog necessarily worked in a mine or factory.

The elegant coat has since received great attention, but the breed’s alert expression, initiative and interest in movement remain important to the breed as a whole.

## Living with the Breed

The Yorkshire Terrier can live well in a flat or a house when it receives activity, calmness training and regular care. The size of the home matters less than whether the household can manage noise, provide time outdoors and create a secure daily rhythm.

Time alone needs to be introduced gradually from very short periods and adapted to the dog’s response. The Swedish Board of Agriculture advises that dogs should be taken outside at least every six hours during the day, but this does not mean that a dog can cope with six hours alone. Puppies and older dogs need more frequent outings, and a dog showing distress needs a different arrangement regardless of what the clock says.

The breed best suits someone who wants a small but active dog and accepts three recurring parts of everyday life: coat, teeth and training. A family with young children or large dogs also needs clear safety routines. Cold and wet weather may require protection, particularly when the coat is clipped short or the dog is standing still.

Before buying a puppy, it is sensible to:

- meet the dam and ask how the parents and adult relatives behave in everyday life
- request the actual weights of the parents and adult relatives and reject promises of a particular “teacup” size
- review documented dental, bite and patella history as well as current breeding recommendations
- decide whether to maintain a long coat or keep the dog clipped, and learn that routine before purchase
- arrange toilet outings, alone-time training and a dog sitter before the puppy comes home.

In the right household, the Yorkshire Terrier is a small, engaged everyday companion with a distinct terrier character. It is easy to take along, but it should be treated as an active dog, not an accessory.

## Quick Facts

- The Bedlington Terrier is a British terrier with a pronounced prey drive behind its soft, lamb-like appearance.
- The breed stands around 41 cm and normally weighs 8–10 kg; bitches may be slightly shorter and dogs slightly taller.
- It is often lively outdoors and calm at home, but needs both daily exercise and activities that engage its mind.
- The coat sheds very little, but needs regular combing and clipping roughly every 6–8 weeks.
- Low shedding does not make the breed allergy-free.
- Copper toxicosis is the most important breed-specific health issue to check before buying a puppy.
- The breed can live in a flat or a house, provided it gets enough activity, gradual training for time alone and safe walks.

## Appearance & Coat

The Bedlington Terrier is an agile, muscular dog with an outline unlike that of most other terriers. Its body is slightly longer than it is tall, the loin is naturally arched and the underline distinctly tucked up. The head is pear- or wedge-shaped, with no defined stop, while the pale silky topknot accentuates the characteristic lamb-like look. Beneath that elegant exterior is a dog built for speed: the breed standard says it should be capable of galloping fast.

The height at the withers is around 41 cm and the weight 8–10 kg. A slight variation downwards for bitches and upwards for dogs is permitted. The colours are blue, liver or sandy, with or without tan markings. The coat should be thick, stand away from the skin and have a marked tendency to twist, particularly on the head and face. It must not feel harsh.

The coat leaves very little hair behind, but it is not low-maintenance. As a practical guide, it should be brushed and combed at least once a week and clipped roughly every 6–8 weeks. Mats may require more frequent attention, especially after woodland walks and in areas where the coat is exposed to friction. The traditional breed trim takes skill, so ask the breeder about a practical pet trim and for details of a groomer who knows the Bedlington Terrier.

The ears need close attention because dense hair growth and narrow ear canals have been noted within the breed. Check regularly for redness, unpleasant odour, itching or recurring trouble, and contact a vet if symptoms appear. Clipping and regular inspection make problems easier to spot, but do not replace a veterinary assessment.

Although the Bedlington Terrier sheds little, this does not make it hypoallergenic. Dog allergens come from sources including skin and saliva, and the amount varies between individuals. Anyone with a dog allergy therefore needs to assess the particular dog and their own reaction rather than relying on coat type alone.

## Temperament & Personality

The Bedlington Terrier combines a friendly, affectionate manner with a terrier’s courage and interest in pursuing prey. The breed ideal is a lively, alert and intelligent companion that is gentle when at rest but ready to act when something happens. This captures the breed’s range well: the same dog may lie quietly on the sofa and moments later want to sprint after something that moves.

Many individuals enjoy close contact with their family and settle well indoors once their needs have been met. Some can be a little reserved with strangers. Shyness and nervousness, however, are not part of the breed ideal. A puppy’s experiences, the parents’ temperament and the owner’s daily routine all influence how the adult dog develops, so meet the dam and, if possible, other relatives of the puppy.

Swedish behavioural assessments and owner surveys give a nuanced picture of how the breed behaves around other dogs. A small group assessed through BPH, the Swedish behavioural and personality assessment, showed low aggression overall, while an owner survey also mentioned individuals that struggled during dog encounters, particularly some males. The conclusion is not that the breed is aggressive or invariably easy, but that the individual dog and the way introductions are handled matter greatly. Choose calm encounters, reward attention to the handler and do not let cramped or chaotic situations shape socialisation.

The strong prey drive is documented in the breed standard and should be taken seriously. A Bedlington Terrier may react very quickly to wildlife, cats or other small animals. Some individuals can live happily with a familiar cat, but the breed name alone offers no guarantee. Always plan for safe management, and separate the dog from small pets whenever you cannot supervise them together.

## Training & Exercise

The Bedlington Terrier needs daily exercise, but a fixed number of minutes will not suit every individual. A good routine includes walks, opportunities to stretch out safely and a task that demands concentration. Age, health, fitness and what the dog did the previous day all affect what is appropriate. A contented dog should be able to settle at home, rather than simply becoming more highly aroused as walks grow longer.

The breed can enjoy agility, tracking, blood tracking, rally obedience or ordinary everyday training. The exact activity matters less than giving the dog a chance to use body and mind with its owner. Search games, balance work, short obedience sessions and controlled play provide variety without turning every day into a major training project.

Use rewards, clear criteria and short sessions. The Bedlington Terrier is intelligent and can learn quickly, but a terrier’s independence makes meaningless repetition less appealing. Reward the behaviour you want in everyday life: voluntarily checking in, waiting calmly at a door, walking with you on the lead and breaking off a chase during play. Harsh corrections risk damaging cooperation and are not needed to set clear boundaries.

Recall training should begin early, but a strong prey drive can override even a well-learned cue. Use a long line wherever the surroundings are not secure, and only allow the dog off lead where a failed recall cannot have serious consequences. The aim is not to prove that the dog always obeys; it is to build a long history of successful repetitions while keeping a line or secure enclosure as backup.

## Health

Copper toxicosis is the most important known breed-specific disease in the Bedlington Terrier. In the COMMD1-related form, an inherited change can cause copper to build up in the liver. Inheritance is autosomal recessive, which means that a dog must inherit the relevant variant from both parents to be genetically affected.

A COMMD1 test can return a result of clear, carrier or genetically affected. A carrier is not ill from the tested variant but can pass it on. A genetically affected dog has two copies and is at risk of developing the disease during its lifetime. A clear result applies to the deletion examined by the test; it does not rule out every other possible cause of liver disease or copper toxicosis.

The Scandinavian Bedlington Club requires the parent dogs to have been DNA tested through the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences before a litter can be listed by the club’s puppy referral service. The club also requires an eye examination for that service. These conditions are not the same as a special registration requirement imposed by the Swedish Kennel Club: its registration rules for 2026 contain no Bedlington-specific requirement for DNA testing or eye screening. The distinction matters when you assess what a breeder has actually done.

Ask to see documents rather than simply accepting that the dogs have been “tested”:

- identifiable COMMD1 results for both parents and an explanation of what the combination means,
- current eye examination results and how any findings influenced the breeding decision,
- information about recurring liver, eye, skin or ear problems among close relatives,
- the breeder’s plan for following the puppies’ health after they leave.

Skin and ears are among the matters monitored by the Swedish breed club. Older surveys have reported itching, ear infections, heavy hair growth in the ears and narrow ear canals, but a survey does not predict the risk for every puppy. Treat the information as a reason to ask questions and stay observant, not as a diagnosis. Recurring itching, head shaking, redness or weeping eyes should be assessed by a vet.

## History & Origins

The Bedlington Terrier was developed in Northumberland in northern England and is particularly associated with the mining town of Bedlington. It was previously known as the Rothbury Terrier. The early dogs needed to be fast, strong and versatile, and were used to hunt rabbits as well as other small quarry and vermin.

A breed association was formed in 1877, after the standard had begun to take shape in the later part of the 1800s. The journey from local working terrier to today’s more elegant show dog and companion is well documented, but accounts of precisely which other breeds contributed to its development are less certain. Its hunting background and working-terrier character are therefore a more reliable legacy than any single disputed cross.

The Bedlington Terrier reached Sweden in the early 1900s. Today it is kept there mainly as a companion and show dog, although its speed, courage and aptitude for dog sports still reflect its origins.

A Bedlington Terrier can live in a flat as well as a house. The size of the home matters less than the daily routine: the dog needs to go out, use its mind and have somewhere safe to run. A garden does not replace walks, and fencing must be reliable if wildlife or cats pass nearby.

With children, the same ground rules apply as with any other dog. An adult should always be present with young children, and the dog needs a resting place where it will be left alone. The Bedlington Terrier’s friendly breed ideal is not a guarantee against misunderstandings, and children must not climb on, disturb or try to pick up the dog.

Time alone must be introduced gradually after the puppy feels secure in its new home. A young puppy cannot be left alone, and adult dogs vary greatly in how readily they settle without company. Build the training in small steps and organise daily life around the dog in front of you, not around a fixed number claimed for the breed.

Budget time and money for regular grooming. Anyone who does not want to learn a practical pet trim will need to find a groomer experienced with the breed and book visits roughly every 6–8 weeks. Weekly combing, ear checks and calm handling practice should also become part of the routine from puppyhood.

The breed best suits someone who wants a close companion but also respects a terrier’s prey drive and independence. Before buying, meet adult dogs, examine the COMMD1 and eye results, ask how the coat is maintained and make a concrete plan for exercise, time alone and any small pets in the home. That makes it much easier to decide whether the soft exterior and decisive character fit the same household.

## Quick Facts

The German Spitz – Kleinspitz is a small, alert companion and watchdog that tends to stay close to its family and quickly notices what is happening around it. It is best suited to an owner who enjoys an active small dog, trains calmly and consistently, and can help it distinguish ordinary everyday sounds from events that genuinely require attention.

- **Country of origin:** Germany
- **Breed type:** One of five size varieties of German Spitz
- **Purpose:** Companion and watchdog
- **Height at the withers:** The ideal height is 27 cm, with a permitted variation of 3 cm either way
- **Weight:** The breed standard does not specify a fixed weight. As a practical guide, many Kleinspitz weigh around 5–8 kg, but suitable body condition and proportions matter more than a particular number
- **Coat:** Long, straight outer coat with a dense, soft undercoat
- **Typical traits:** Alert, lively, trainable and often reserved with strangers

The Kleinspitz is a distinct, recognised size variety, not a crossbreed. Its size limits are nevertheless close to those of the Mittelspitz and Pomeranian. In Sweden, certain matings between neighbouring varieties are permitted. Puppies are initially registered as the larger parent’s variety, and for dogs later measured at a show, the final size variety can be determined from 15 months of age. A prospective puppy buyer should therefore ask about both parents’ size and how the breeder handles variety registration.

## Appearance & Coat

The Kleinspitz should be compact and almost square, with a pointed muzzle, small upright ears and a high-set tail carried over the back. The abundant coat forms a distinct ruff around the neck and feathering on the hind legs. Beneath the coat, the body should remain well proportioned and movement should be flowing and springy.

The breed’s ideal height is 27 cm, and the permitted range is 24–30 cm. Rather than stipulating a set number of kilograms, the breed standard links weight to the dog’s size. Assess body condition by touch and with a vet when necessary; a full coat can conceal excess weight and can also make a slender dog look heavier than it is.

Accepted colours include white, black, brown, orange and wolf sable, as well as several clearly defined colour varieties, including cream, orange sable, black and tan, and parti-colour with a white ground. Merle is not included in the breed standard. Colour is a matter of appearance and should never take priority over health, temperament and a carefully considered mating.

The coat consists of a straight, harsher outer coat and a short, thick, cotton-like undercoat. Brush or comb right through to the skin about once a week and more often during shedding periods. Pay particular attention behind the ears, in the armpits and beneath a harness or collar. The coat should not routinely be shaped by extensive trimming. Bathe the dog when it is dirty rather than following a fixed timetable.

## Temperament & Personality

The Kleinspitz is usually lively, attentive and strongly oriented towards its people, but it is not automatically sociable with everyone it meets. The breed standard describes a dog with a natural wariness of strangers, without fearfulness or aggression. In everyday life, this may mean that the dog prefers to observe a visitor before seeking contact.

A tendency to bark is an important part of the breed decision. A Kleinspitz often reacts quickly to sounds, movement in a shared stairwell or someone arriving at the door. The goal need not be a completely silent dog, but one that can alert and then settle again. Reward calm behaviour, create distance from recurring triggers and avoid inadvertently reinforcing every alarm by rushing to the window with the dog.

BPH, a standardised behavioural assessment, still has only a small Kleinspitz sample whose owners chose to participate. On average, the group appeared relatively confident and showed few threatening or aggressive reactions, but it was not markedly sociable with strangers either. These findings describe the participating dogs, not every individual. The parents’ behaviour, early experiences and the breeder’s environment offer better guidance about an individual puppy than the breed name alone.

The breed is often described as having little hunting drive, but this is not a guarantee of reliable recall. Curiosity and excitement may still prompt a Kleinspitz to chase birds, wildlife or bicycles. Train recall in gradual stages and use a long line where the surroundings require it.

## Training & Exercise

The Kleinspitz needs daily physical activity and mental engagement, but exercise should be adapted to the individual dog’s age, health and experience rather than a universal number of minutes. Several walks, opportunities to sniff and short problem-solving sessions will often suit it better than one long, monotonous outing.

The breed is quick and trainable, which makes reward-based training effective but also exposes unclear rules. Work in small steps and reward the behaviour you want: four paws on the floor when greeting, attention before a door opens and quiet after an alert. Harsh corrections risk causing fear or more noise and have no place in modern dog training.

Scent work, tricks, balance exercises and everyday obedience can provide useful variety. A healthy adult Kleinspitz may also enjoy longer walks, but fitness should be built gradually. Puppies should be able to move freely in varied ways without forced distances or repetitive jumping. Its small body does not make the dog a fragile ornament, but it does need protection from falls, rough play and exertion for which it is not ready.

Accustom the dog early to brushing, tooth brushing, nail trimming and being examined. Short, positive handling sessions make recurring care easier and improve the chance of noticing changes in the skin, eyes, mouth or movement.

## Health

The Kleinspitz is generally regarded as a relatively healthy small breed, but a considered purchase requires more than a broad claim about healthy lines. Ask to see the official results for both parents and which problems have actually occurred among close relatives.

The Swedish breed club recommends that breeding dogs have normal kneecaps and eyes without recorded abnormalities. Patellar findings are recorded on a scale from 0 to 3, so the actual result must be considered; saying that a dog has been “patella checked” does not reveal what the examination found. An official eye examination must be carried out by an authorised veterinary ophthalmologist and provides a current picture of the dog’s eye status, not a lifelong guarantee.

Recommendations for knee and eye examinations should not be confused with a central health scheme or a separate registration requirement for the Kleinspitz. What matters to a puppy buyer is the actual results, the date of the examinations and how the breeder uses them in breeding decisions.

Be cautious about broad claims concerning DNA tests for PRA. A test that identifies a particular gene variant in another breed does not rule out every form of progressive retinal atrophy in the Kleinspitz. Eye examinations, family history and transparent reporting of findings therefore cannot be replaced by a vague statement that the dogs have been “DNA tested”.

Abnormal coat loss appears in descriptions of small German Spitz, but terms such as BSD or “black skin disease” are used as informal umbrella labels rather than a single confirmed diagnosis. A dog with abnormal hair loss needs veterinary investigation rather than a diagnosis based on its breed or appearance.

As with other dogs, weight management and dental care form part of preventive care. Introduce tooth brushing early and make it a calm daily routine.

## History & Origins

The modern breed origin of the German Spitz – Kleinspitz is in Germany, and it belongs to the FCI group for Spitz and primitive types. The FCI places the five German Spitz varieties under the same breed standard: Wolfspitz/Keeshond, Giant Spitz, Medium Spitz, Miniature Spitz and Pomeranian.

The German Spitz has historically been described as a watchdog and companion. The international breed standard received definitive recognition in 1957, although its wording and size rules have since been revised. Older accounts link German Spitz to very early European dog types, but these origin stories should be read as cynological tradition rather than proven ancestry for today’s Kleinspitz.

The shared standard explains why the boundaries between varieties still have practical importance in breeding and registration. A Kleinspitz is therefore not merely “a small Spitz” in an everyday sense, but the size variety that should fall within the measurements and overall appearance set out in the breed standard.

## Living with the Breed

The Kleinspitz can live successfully in either a flat or a house if it receives activity, rest and help managing sounds. The size of the home matters less than the way daily life is organised. In a flat with poor sound insulation, however, a prospective owner should take the breed’s quick alarm response seriously and plan calmness training from the outset.

With children, the breed can become an engaged family dog, but adults must always take responsibility for the interaction. The dog needs an undisturbed resting place, and children must learn not to disturb it while it is eating or sleeping. Because the Kleinspitz is small, extra care is needed when lifting it and during lively play. No dog, regardless of breed, should be left alone with young children.

Compatibility with a cat or another dog depends more on the individuals and the introduction than on the breed name. Initial meetings should be calm and gradual, with opportunities for distance and separate resources. Previous experience of the other species is helpful but does not guarantee that every combination will work.

Time alone needs to be introduced gradually once the dog feels secure in its new home. A young puppy cannot be left alone, and adult dogs vary greatly in what they can cope with without stress. Increase the duration in small steps and reduce it again if the dog begins to bark persistently, pace, destroy things or show other signs of distress.

The Kleinspitz is therefore best suited to someone who wants a small but active dog, can live with regular coat care and is prepared to work on noise, social confidence and everyday skills. It is a poorer choice for someone seeking a quiet, independent dog that is satisfied with brief toilet walks and can be left alone for long working days.

German Spitz – Kleinspitz

VDH (Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen)

The German Spitz – Kleinspitz is a small, squarely built, fox‑faced companion with a dense double coat and curled tail. Alert, lively and strongly bonded to its people, it adapts well to city or country life, needs regular grooming, exercise and training, and can be vocal and watchful.

## Quick Facts

The German Spitz – Mittelspitz is the medium-sized variety of German Spitz. It is a lively, alert and quick-learning companion that forms a close bond with its family and naturally notices what is happening around the home. It is best suited to someone who appreciates an attentive dog and is prepared to teach calm behaviour and manage barking from the outset.

- **Breed group:** Group 5, Spitz and primitive types
- **Origin:** Germany
- **Variety:** One of five German Spitz varieties
- **Height at the withers:** 35 cm with a tolerance of 5 cm in either direction, giving a range of 30–40 cm
- **Weight:** The breed standard does not specify a fixed weight range; weight should be appropriate for the dog's size
- **Coat:** A double coat with a long, straight outer coat and a short, dense undercoat
- **Daily life:** Active and keen to learn, with low hunting drive according to the breed standard but a pronounced watchful nature

The Mittelspitz is larger than the Kleinspitz and smaller than the Grossspitz. It is a distinct size variety and should not be judged by the Pomeranian's measurements or appearance. For a prospective owner, noise levels, coat care and the ability to provide worthwhile activity matter more than the size of the home.

## Appearance & Coat

The German Spitz – Mittelspitz should be compact and square in outline, with body length equal to height at the withers. The head tapers towards the nose and has a fox-like appearance. The eyes should be dark and almond-shaped, while the ears are small, triangular and erect. The profusely coated tail is carried high over the back.

The official height is 35 cm, plus or minus 5 cm. This gives a range of 30–40 cm, rather than 32–36 cm or other narrower figures that are sometimes quoted. The standard gives no fixed ideal weight in kilograms. An adult should instead have a weight and body condition suited to its height, build and muscle mass.

In Sweden, matings are permitted between the Mittelspitz and the adjacent Grossspitz or Kleinspitz varieties. Following such a mating, the offspring are registered as the variety of the larger parent. Final registration by size takes place after an official measurement once the dog is over 15 months old. It is therefore worth asking how large the parents and their fully grown close relatives actually are.

The coat has two distinct layers. The outer coat is long, straight and should stand away from the body. The undercoat is short, thick and dense. The hair forms a ruff around the neck and shoulders, with ample feathering on the backs of the hind legs. The coat should not be wavy, curly or shaggy, and should not look as though it has been shaped by clipping.

Accepted colours are black, brown, white, orange and grey-shaded, together with several colours grouped as “other colours” in the standard: orange-sable, cream, cream-sable, black and tan, black and silver, brown and tan, and parti-colour. A parti-coloured dog should have a white base with patches in a single colour accepted by the standard. Colours not described in the standard are disqualifying in the show ring.

Thoroughly combing the coat from the skin outwards about once a week is a useful starting point. More frequent grooming may be needed when the undercoat is being shed. The breed does shed, although loose hair is often most noticeable during distinct moulting periods. Introduce handling early and pay particular attention behind the ears, through the ruff, on the legs and beneath the tail.

The standard permits a tidy appearance but not a clipped-to-shape outline. Before considering any substantial trimming, ask the breeder to demonstrate the tools and technique suited to that particular coat.

## Temperament & Personality

A typical Mittelspitz is attentive, lively, devoted to its owner and highly trainable. The breed standard also describes a natural reserve towards strangers and low hunting drive. In everyday life, its watchfulness often means that it reacts quickly to people, animals or noises outside the home.

This does not mean that every Mittelspitz behaves alike. The Swedish Kennel Club's BPH behavioural assessment analysis shows considerable variation among the German Spitz dogs assessed. On average, the Mittelspitz group was relatively secure and seldom reacted aggressively during social encounters, but some dogs barely greeted a stranger while others greeted very intensely. A small number of assessments were stopped because the dogs were afraid. Rather than asking only whether the parents are “friendly”, ask how they respond to visitors, sudden noises, handling and unfamiliar environments, and how quickly they recover after being startled.

Barking is a central practical consideration. A Mittelspitz that raises the alarm when something happens is displaying a typical breed trait, but the warning need not continue for a long time. Reward quiet behaviour, teach the dog to go to a designated place when someone comes to the door, and limit opportunities to monitor every movement outside the window. This is not the right breed if you need a dog that is almost always silent.

The breed can live happily with children when interactions are calm and respectful. Young children and dogs should always be supervised by an adult, and the dog needs a resting place where it will be left undisturbed. Relatively low hunting drive may make living with other animals easier, but it does not guarantee that every individual will be safe with cats or small pets. Make introductions gradually and provide secure, separate areas.

## Training & Exercise

The Mittelspitz needs daily physical exercise and mental stimulation, but no fixed number of hours will suit every dog. A youngster, a fit adult and a senior require different levels of exertion. Adjust walks and activities to the dog's age, fitness, health and ability to settle afterwards.

The breed may enjoy scent work, tracking, rally obedience, agility, heelwork to music, obedience and trick training. A good routine need not involve competition, but the dog benefits from tasks that allow it to sniff, think and work with its owner. Balance activity with calm walks and planned rest instead of trying to tire the dog through constant excitement.

Early priorities include:

- settling quietly by the door and windows and in response to noises in shared hallways
- recall and responsiveness, even though the breed generally has relatively low hunting drive
- walking on a loose lead and maintaining contact around people and dogs
- accepting the handling of paws, coat, mouth and ears
- learning to lie down and rest when nothing is happening

Reward-based training gives the dog clear information without fear or pain. Notice and reward moments of calm, make the desired behaviour easy to choose and increase distractions gradually. If the dog has already started barking, first create distance or block its view of the trigger; you can then practise an alternative response.

## Health

The German Spitz – Mittelspitz is described as a generally healthy and robust breed, but patellar luxation and inherited eye conditions are two areas monitored by the Swedish breed club. A puppy buyer should ask for the actual examination results rather than accepting a general statement that the parents have been “health tested”.

Patellar luxation means that the kneecap can move out of its normal position. Some dogs show no obvious signs, while others may be lame or occasionally skip a step with one hind leg. The Swedish breed club recommends that both parents have normal kneecaps. Ask to see the official patella result for each parent and check that the dog's identity matches the result.

The club also recommends an eye examination with no findings before breeding. An official eye examination is carried out by a vet with specific expertise, and the result is recorded centrally by the Swedish Kennel Club. It may identify clinical eye changes present at the time of examination, but a result with no findings is not a promise that the dog will never develop an eye problem. Ask whether eye disease has also occurred in older close relatives.

The Swedish Kennel Club's registration rules for 2026 do not require a breed-specific patella or eye examination before a Mittelspitz litter can be registered. The breed club's recommendations therefore go beyond the binding breed-specific registration requirements. A puppy registered with the Swedish Kennel Club does not automatically have two parents with the results recommended by the club.

Ask the breeder to show you:

- the official patella result for each parent
- the eye examination report, including its date and complete assessment
- information about knees, eyes, skin and coat in fully grown close relatives
- BPH behavioural assessment results, if either parent or close relatives have been assessed

## History & Origins

The German Spitz – Mittelspitz is a German variety within the FCI breed German Spitz. The FCI definitively recognised the German Spitz in 1957, and the current standard divides the breed into the Wolfspitz, Grossspitz, Mittelspitz, Kleinspitz and Zwergspitz.

The breed standard repeats an older theory that German Spitz dogs descend from Stone Age peat dogs and from the Spitz dogs of later lake-dwelling cultures. The standard says that the breed is “said to descend” from these dogs. This is therefore best read as a traditional account of its background, not as an uninterrupted and fully documented pedigree extending back to the Stone Age.

The German parent breed club describes the medium-sized Spitz as the size long kept by craftspeople, small farmers and carters, who used the dogs as watchful guardians of the farm and home. The Mittelspitz gained its own place in the German Spitz standard in 1969. Today it is primarily kept as a companion and activity dog, but its watchful nature remains.

## Living with the Breed

A Mittelspitz can live in a flat or a house provided it receives daily activity, rest and training to remain calm around sounds. In a building with poor sound insulation, it is important to consider before buying how the dog will be prevented from monitoring the communal hallway, windows and front door throughout the day. A large garden will neither solve barking nor replace shared walks and purposeful activities.

Time alone must be introduced gradually once the dog feels secure at home. A well-prepared adult dog can usually remain alone for a few hours, but individuals differ considerably and a young puppy should not be left alone. A dog that becomes distressed, barks continuously or cannot settle needs shorter training steps and more company.

Expect to groom the coat weekly and to comb it more often while the undercoat is being shed. Handling practice should involve the whole dog, not only its back. Check the skin, knees, paws, claws, ears and teeth at the same time so that changes can be noticed early.

The breed suits someone who wants an alert dog that stays close to its family and enjoys training, and who accepts that its watchful nature needs active guidance. It is a poorer match if silence, a very low need for activity or minimal coat care is essential. Choose a breeder on the strength of documented knee and eye results, stable adult relatives and open information about barking and fears, rather than colour or a fluffy puppy coat alone.

## Quick Facts

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan is a British cattle-herding and companion breed. It is low to the ground but much more solidly built, powerful and work-focused than its short legs might suggest. It is best suited to someone who wants to train, walk and solve problems with their dog every day.

- **Size:** The breed standard gives 30 cm at the withers as the ideal height. It does not specify a fixed weight range; weight should be in proportion to the dog’s size and overall balance.
- **Build:** Long and strong, with short legs, good ground clearance and a long, fox-like tail.
- **Temperament:** The breed ideal is alert, active, intelligent and steady, neither shy nor aggressive.
- **Activity:** Daily physical exercise and mental stimulation are essential. A fixed number of exercise minutes will not suit every individual.
- **Coat:** A short to medium-length, weather-resistant double coat with an undercoat. Expect shedding and regular brushing.
- **Important when buying a puppy:** Ask to see the parents’ actual hip dysplasia results, and ask about eye examinations, rcd3-PRA and any merle colouring.

The Cardigan and the Welsh Corgi Pembroke are two separate breeds. Do not choose a dog solely because it is called a ‘corgi’ or resembles a short-legged dog in a photograph. Compare the breeds’ everyday needs, meet adult dogs and form your own impression of the breeder’s dogs.

## Appearance & Coat

A Welsh Corgi Cardigan should be sturdy, mobile and capable of endurance: low-set, but not so low that the body lacks ground clearance. The body is fairly long and strong, with substantial bone and large, erect ears that are slightly rounded at the tips. The moderately long tail reaches to, or nearly to, the ground. It may lift when the dog is moving but should not curl over the back. This long, fox-like tail is a clear feature of the Cardigan standard.

Accepted colours are blue merle, brindle, red, sable, tricolour with brindle points and tricolour with red points. Typical white markings are permitted, but white should not predominate on the body or head and should not surround the eyes. Under the standard, blue or blue-flecked eyes are permitted only in blue merles.

The coat consists of a coarse, preferably straight outer coat and a protective undercoat. Brush through the entire coat regularly and more often when a large amount of undercoat is coming loose. Check that loose undercoat is not becoming packed behind the ears, on the backs of the thighs or around the tail. The timing and amount of shedding vary between dogs; plan for more loose hair at certain times rather than relying on a fixed calendar. Gently accustom the puppy to brushing, nail trimming and other handling from the outset.

## Temperament & Personality

The breed ideal for the Welsh Corgi Cardigan is alert, active, intelligent and steady. That is a useful starting point, but it does not guarantee how every dog will develop. Swedish BPH behavioural assessment results show variation within the breed, while upbringing, experience and individuality affect qualities such as sociability, fearfulness, interest in play and the ability to settle.

Its background as a farm and cattle dog may show in close attention to movement, a desire to monitor its surroundings and a tendency to bark. Some young dogs may also try to control running people or animals and nip towards their legs. These are possible behaviours to anticipate and address through training, not something every Cardigan will do. Interrupt calmly, reward an alternative behaviour and offer structured activities in which the dog can use its nose, body and mind.

Ask the breeder how the parents behave with visitors, in unfamiliar environments and after activity. Meet them where possible. A dog that becomes excited quickly but struggles to settle can be demanding even if it learns readily. In many homes, the ability to switch between activity and rest is at least as important as enthusiasm for training.

## Training & Exercise

A Cardigan needs physical activity and opportunities to think every day, but there is no credible rule in minutes that suits them all. Age, health, fitness and personality determine the right amount. A sound routine combines walks in varied environments with scent work, short training sessions, play and time to recover.

The breed often enjoys tasks that involve working with its owner and making small choices. Tracking, search games, everyday obedience, rally obedience and controlled body-awareness exercises are examples; a dog does not have to herd to lead a fulfilling life. Increase difficulty and physical demands gradually, particularly in a growing dog, and seek advice from a vet or veterinary physiotherapist if the dog is in pain, lame or moving abnormally. Its conformation is not, in itself, a reason to ban all stairs or jumping, but the environment and activity must suit the individual dog.

Use positive, reward-based training in clear stages. Prioritise engagement, recall, walking with you and calm behaviour around bicycles, running children and other movement that may attract the dog’s attention. If the dog barks at the door or window, help it away from the situation before barking becomes a habit, then reward the behaviour you want. Harsh corrections or attempts to ‘dominate’ the dog are unnecessary and may undermine its sense of security.

## Health

The current Swedish breed-specific breeding strategy describes the Welsh Corgi Cardigan as generally healthy. In the eye examination results reviewed for the strategy, no single eye disease stood out. This does not mean that every dog is healthy or that health screening is unimportant. For a puppy buyer, documented results are more valuable than general assurances that a line is ‘problem-free’.

### Hips and musculoskeletal health

Since 2025, both parents must have an official hip dysplasia status before mating for their offspring to be eligible for registration with the Swedish Kennel Club. **A known status means that the result is officially recorded; it does not automatically mean that the hips are free from dysplasia.** Ask for the actual grades and invite the breeder to explain the choice of pairing.

The breed club is also monitoring short ulna, in which the ulna stops growing too early and the foreleg may become increasingly bowed. If a growing dog develops a clear change in leg alignment, an outward-turning paw or lameness, it should be assessed promptly by a vet with orthopaedic experience. Treatment may need to start while the dog is still growing, so do not simply wait to see what happens.

### Eyes, rcd3-PRA and merle

Rcd3-PRA is an early-onset, autosomal recessive form of PRA found in the breed. A DNA test can show whether a dog is clear, a carrier or genetically affected. A carrier will not itself develop this particular form of PRA, but can pass the variant on. The test answers only the question of this genetic variant. An eye examination can instead detect clinical eye changes but cannot identify unaffected carriers, so the two forms of screening do not replace each other.

Blue merle is an accepted colour, but the merle variant must not be inherited from both parents because the offspring would then be at risk of serious hearing and eye defects. When buying a merle puppy, the breeder should be able to explain the parents’ colours and how the mating complies with Swedish Kennel Club rules.

Keep the dog in an appropriate body condition as well. A defined waist should be visible behind the ribs, and the ribs should be easy to feel with light pressure. Monitor changes over time instead of pursuing a single standard weight.

## History & Origins

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan developed in Wales as a farm and cattle dog. It worked closely with the people on the farm and helped to move and manage cattle. This historical function explains the combination of low height, mobility, endurance and close attention to its surroundings.

The breed’s exact age and the dogs from which it descends have not been conclusively established. Older accounts link it to very early Welsh dogs, Celts or Vikings, but these theories should not be treated as a certain lineage. The Swedish Kennel Club states that Cardigans and Pembrokes were interbred until 1934, when they were separated and recognised as two distinct breeds. The first Welsh Corgi Cardigan registered in Sweden arrived in 1963.

The FCI now classifies the breed as a cattle-herding and companion dog. Many live solely as family companions, but their active, work-focused heritage remains relevant when deciding whether everyday life with the breed will be a good fit.

## Living with the Breed

A Welsh Corgi Cardigan can live in a flat, but its low height does not automatically make it easy to keep in a small home. It needs daily activity, opportunities to settle and training around sounds in communal hallways and outside windows. A house and garden are no substitute for walks, shared activities and new environments.

Being left alone is not a fixed breed trait. Start with very short periods once the dog feels secure and increase the time gradually; take a step back if it shows signs of distress. Plan around the individual and do not expect a young puppy to cope with being left alone.

The breed can live happily in a family with children, but no breed is automatically safe with children. An adult should always be present when a dog and young children interact, and the dog needs a resting place where it will be left undisturbed. Teach both children and dog calm boundaries, particularly when play and running may prompt the dog to follow or control movement.

The same individual approach applies to other dogs and cats. Previous experience and a controlled introduction matter more than the breed name. When introducing a cat, provide it with a dog-free retreat, keep meetings calm and prevent chasing from the very beginning.

Before buying, it is sensible to check:

- the parents’ official hip grades, not merely that they have been X-rayed;
- the date and result of eye examinations, as well as rcd3-PRA status;
- how any merle pairing was planned;
- how close relatives respond to sounds, people and dogs, and how well they settle after activity;
- whether you want a daily life that includes shedding, training and daily activity throughout the dog’s lifetime.

This is not the right breed for someone choosing solely for its compact size. A Cardigan is an active, intelligent cattle dog on short legs and needs an owner with both the time and interest to provide a well-planned daily routine.
