Food and water bowls

Look into what kinds of food and water bowls are available. Choose durable bowls that are easy to wash. If your dog has long ears, there are special bowls designed so the dog doesn’t dip its ears in the water while drinking.

Dog bed

A dog needs a quiet, comfortable spot where it can rest. It can be a good idea to buy a dog bed or a blanket. It’s not a must, but many dogs like having one.

Collar and leash

All dogs must have a leash. There are many different types on the market. Check what’s available and choose what suits your dog best – leash with collar or harness. You’ll also need a collar. A good tip is to have your phone number engraved on a tag or ring and attach it to the collar in case your dog runs off.

Dog food

When you buy food for your dog, it’s a good idea to ask the breeder what kind of food the dog has been given so far. If the dog food has worked well, it’s best to keep using the same food going forward. Also remember that if you change food too often, your dog can get an upset stomach.

Treats

Buy something you can use to reward your dog. Treats are useful when you’re training exercises, recalls, or playing. It’s also a good idea to get a fun toy that your dog might enjoy.

Poop bags

You need to buy these as well. Don’t forget to pick up after your dog – it’s required by law in most municipalities. Make sure to have poop bags ready from day one!

Toothbrush

You should brush your dog’s teeth so it doesn’t develop problems as it gets older. Start when it’s a puppy so it gets used to it right away. Praise your dog and give it something to chew on (without sugar) when you’re done, so it sees toothbrushing as something fun.

Nail clippers

It’s also smart to start clipping your dog’s nails when it’s still a puppy so it gets used to it. The same idea as with toothbrushing applies here. Praise your dog and give a treat or toy afterwards so it becomes a positive experience.

Buy grooming products if your dog’s breed requires them. This can include anything from dog shampoo to different types of brushes.
