Its size makes the Affenpinscher easy to take along, but this is not a passive lapdog. It needs walks, scent work, learning and opportunities to take part in family life. Puppies and young dogs can be particularly lively.

## Appearance & Coat

The Affenpinscher should be small, wire-haired and compact, with the facial expression that gave the breed its name. The dark, fairly round eyes, projecting lower jaw and harsh facial furnishings create its so-called monkey-like expression. Body length should be roughly equal to height at the withers.

The short muzzle should be straight rather than turned up, and the nostrils should be well open. An extremely flattened face is therefore not the goal. The lower jaw projects beyond the upper jaw, but the canine teeth, incisors and tongue should not show when the mouth is closed.

The Swedish FCI standard specifies a pure black coat with a black undercoat. Historical descriptions mention several colours, and an occasional puppy may still be born in another colour, but that does not change the colour specified by the current standard.

The coat is relatively straightforward to care for but does need trimming, usually a few times a year. Mature coat is then removed to retain the harsh texture and outline. Between trims, comb through the coat as needed, paying particular attention to the beard, leg furnishings and other areas where tangles can form. Check that the harsh hair around the eyes is not causing irritation.

Coat type does not make an Affenpinscher allergy-free. There are no allergy-free dog breeds, and dog allergens occur mainly in the skin and saliva. Anyone with an allergy therefore needs to assess the individual dog and their own reaction rather than relying on coat type alone.

## Temperament & Personality

The Affenpinscher is typically affectionate, alert, courageous and stubborn. It often wants to be close to its family and quickly notices changes in its surroundings. It may be reserved with strangers. Let the dog approach at its own pace instead of forcing a greeting.

Its alert nature may show as barking when somebody arrives, when there are sounds outside the front door or when something unexpected happens. The amount of barking varies, and nobody can promise a silent Affenpinscher. Reward calm behaviour, teach a clear alternative to continued alarm barking and arrange the home so the dog does not feel it must constantly watch the windows or door.

The breed standard describes the desired temperament. In the published breed-specific breeding strategy for 2021–2026, however, too few Swedish Affenpinschers had completed the Swedish BPH or MH behavioural assessments to provide a reliable picture of the breed's temperament. Claims that every dog is fearless, highly sociable or especially vocal therefore go beyond the evidence presented. When choosing a puppy, the parents' everyday behaviour is more useful than sweeping promises about the breed.

Relationships with other dogs depend on the individual, experience and introductions. The breed can be self-assured in encounters and needs to learn to pass and socialise without pushing into another dog's space. Its historical work against rats and mice also means that it should not be assumed safe to run loose with small pets. If there is already a cat in the home, calm introductions, safe escape routes and supervision are needed; breed history cannot predict how an individual dog will react.

## Training & Exercise

An Affenpinscher needs physical activity and mental engagement every day, but there is no single exact number of minutes that suits every dog. Adjust walks, play and training to age, health, weather and the individual. What matters is a varied routine in which the dog can move, explore and use its brain.

Nosework, human-scent tracking, search exercises and rally obedience can suit the breed's curiosity and willingness to work. An ordinary walk becomes more rewarding when the dog is sometimes allowed to follow scents, find placed objects or solve a simple task. Safe balance and body-awareness exercises are also useful, rather than carrying the dog past everything it can confidently negotiate by itself.

Use rewards and increase the difficulty gradually. Short, varied sessions tend to be more successful than many monotonous repetitions. Put particular effort into recall, attention and the ability to disengage from something interesting, but never treat recall as a guarantee near traffic or small animals.

Alertness and independence are easier to manage when the dog practises everyday situations early: visitors, door sounds, encounters with other dogs, handling and settling while activity continues nearby. Harsh corrections can create conflict or insecurity and are not needed to set clear boundaries.

## Health

The Affenpinscher is described as a relatively healthy breed, but the small Swedish population makes firm conclusions about prevalence difficult. A careful puppy buyer should therefore examine both official results and the health of parents, siblings and previous offspring rather than relying on the general statement that the breed is healthy.

Breathing is a current area of monitoring. The Affenpinscher has a short muzzle, but the standard requires well-open nostrils. Since May 2026, BOAS grades obtained through RFG-Scheme can be centrally recorded by the Swedish Kennel Club for this breed. The examination assesses the dog's breathing before and after a short exercise test. Central recording does not currently mean that the examination is mandatory before breeding. Even so, ask about the parents' breathing, stamina, recovery and any RFG grades. Obvious breathing noise, laboured breathing, bluish mucous membranes, fainting or marked intolerance of heat should not be dismissed as normal for the breed.

Patellar luxation, in which the kneecap can move out of position, is another monitored area. The current breed-specific breeding strategy presents older, limited evidence: of 90 dogs with a recorded patella examination in Swedish Kennel Club data from 2011 to 2018, five had a finding, while 19 of 172 respondents in a separate owner survey reported patellar luxation. These figures are not a current measure of risk for each puppy, but they provide good reason to ask about official patella results and knee problems in the family.

The breeding strategy also highlights whelping difficulties and puppies dying before registration as important breeding concerns. The evidence is not current enough to give a reliable frequency. Ask how the dam and her close female relatives have whelped, whether Caesarean sections have been needed and how previous litters developed. Ask the breeder to explain how the planned mating contributes to genetic diversity in this small population.

Start a dental-care routine in puppyhood, and ask a vet to assess lameness, recurring airway noise, eye irritation or other symptoms. A list of possible diagnoses can never replace an examination of the individual dog.

## History & Origins

The Affenpinscher is an old German breed developed from the wire-haired Pinscher. Dogs of a similar type appear in older European art, and the breed was first registered in Germany in 1879. Around the beginning of the twentieth century, it was a popular toy dog.

It was kept as a companion in southern Germany, but sources also describe a small farm watchdog that alerted to strangers and killed rats and mice. That background helps to explain the breed's vigilance, quick reactions and interest in searching and problem-solving, but it does not determine the behaviour of every modern dog.

The breed appeared in Sweden in small numbers at different points during the twentieth century without establishing a lasting population. Two dogs were imported from Germany in 1986, and that reintroduction enabled the breed to become established in the country again.

## Living with the Breed

An Affenpinscher can live well in a flat or a house. The size of the home matters less than whether the dog receives walks, activity, rest and companionship. In a flat where sound carries easily, however, owners need to allow for the breed's alert nature and practise calm responses to noises outside the front door before barking becomes a habit.

Time alone must be introduced gradually once the dog feels secure at home. Begin with very short, uneventful absences and extend them only when the dog can remain calm. A young puppy cannot be left alone, and adult dogs also differ markedly in what they can cope with. The breed is strongly family-oriented, so plan around the dog you actually have rather than a promised number of hours.

Around children, the dog's small body makes gentle handling especially important. Young children and a dog should always have an adult present, and the dog needs an undisturbed place to rest. Children should not carry the dog, disturb it while it is eating or sleeping, or hold it still for a cuddle. Life in a considerate family can work well, but adults remain wholly responsible for both the dog's needs and the children's safety.

Before buying a puppy, meet at least the dam, observe how the dogs breathe and move, and ask about temperament, patella results, RFG grades, teeth, eyes, whelping and previous offspring. Ask for specific answers and verifiable results where these exist. The Affenpinscher is best suited to a home that does not mistake small size for modest needs: it wants to join in, think, move and be taken seriously.

The Affenpinscher is a small, sturdy German toy breed with a rough, low‑shedding coat and a monkey‑like face. ## Quick Facts

The Labrador Retriever is a medium-to-large retrieving gundog with roots in Newfoundland, Canada. The breed was developed mainly in Britain. It is known for its willingness to work with people and its interest in carrying and retrieving objects. It is also an active working dog, rather than an automatically easy-going family pet.

Labradors are bred with different priorities. Some breeders focus on working ability, others on conformation and companionship, while many aim to combine several qualities. Labels such as “working Labrador” and “show Labrador” therefore do not tell you everything about an individual dog. Look at the parents, adult relatives, working records and how the breeder actually lives and works with their dogs.

## Appearance & Coat

A Labrador should be strongly built, compact and agile without becoming heavy or overweight. Typical features include a broad head, a powerful body, well-angulated limbs and the characteristic “otter tail”: thick at the base, tapering towards the tip and covered in short, dense hair. The ideal height is 56–57 cm for dogs and 54–56 cm for bitches. The number on the scales matters less than a visible waist and ribs that can be felt easily beneath the skin.

The coat has short, dense outer hair and a water-resistant undercoat. It provides good protection in cold, wet conditions, but also means that a Labrador can shed heavily, particularly when the undercoat is changing. Brush more often during shedding periods and bathe the dog when it genuinely needs it. A fixed bathing or brushing timetable will not suit every dog.

Check the skin, paws and ears regularly, especially after bathing or swimming. Dry the outer ear if it is damp, but clean it only when necessary. An unpleasant smell, brown discharge, redness or repeated head shaking should be assessed by a vet rather than treated with routine ear cleaning.

The breed standard recognises solid black, yellow or liver; a small white mark on the chest may occur. “Silver” is not a fourth recognised colour and is registered as a colour that does not conform to the standard. The colour label alone, however, does not justify sweeping claims about an individual dog's health.

## Temperament & Personality

The breed ideal is a friendly, intelligent and biddable dog that enjoys working with its handler. Many Labradors seek social contact, respond well to reward-based training and show enthusiasm in both play and work. No breed description is a guarantee, however. Temperament is also shaped by inheritance, early experience, training, health and everyday surroundings.

The retrieving instinct often appears as a desire to carry things in the mouth. Give the dog suitable objects and teach a calm exchange or “drop” cue instead of chasing it when it picks something up. This makes daily life safer while giving the dog an appropriate outlet for a natural behaviour. Food can be a powerful reward, but play, scent work and the chance to retrieve can also be highly effective.

Differences between breeding lines are real, but they are not absolute. Working-bred dogs are often selected for speed, stamina and focused retrieving work. Dogs from more conformation-led lines may have a different build and working style. This does not mean that every working-bred Labrador struggles to settle or that every show-bred Labrador is calm. Ask the breeder for specific examples of the parents' energy, ability to switch off, noisiness, sociability and willingness to work.

A BPH or MH assessment can add information about how a dog responded in standardised situations. It is a behavioural description, not a temperament test that a dog passes or fails. Consider it alongside your own meetings with the dogs and information about their relatives.

## Training & Exercise

A Labrador needs daily physical activity as well as tasks that engage its nose, memory and partnership with the handler. There is no universal number of hours that suits a puppy, an adult working dog, a family companion and a senior. Adjust the amount and intensity to the dog's age, health, experience and recovery.

Walks can be combined with retrieving, searching for people, tracking, obedience, steadiness exercises and simple scent games. Short, focused sessions are often more useful than repeating the same exercise until the dog loses concentration. Rest and the ability to settle are part of training, not proof that the dog has had too little to do.

Early priorities include a reliable recall, walking on a loose lead, calm handling, steadiness and a clear cue for giving up an object. Use reward-based methods and increase the difficulty gradually. If you use plenty of food in training, count it as part of the dog's daily allowance.

An interest in water is common in the breed, but not every Labrador enjoys swimming and no dog is automatically safe in water. Start in shallow, calm water, let the dog set the pace and make sure it has an easy way out. Supervise around fast-flowing, cold or algae-affected water, and do not throw objects so far that an eager dog is pushed beyond its ability.

## Health

When choosing a puppy, the important question is not simply whether the parents have been “tested”, but which examinations were carried out, when they were done and what the results were. A Labrador's joints, eyes and body condition deserve particular attention.

For a Labrador litter to be registered with the Swedish Kennel Club, both parents must have an official hip dysplasia result before mating. A recorded result is not automatically a clear result. The Swedish Labrador Retriever Club recommends stricter selection: both parents should have clear hip and elbow radiographs and should have had an eye examination within the two years before mating, with no hereditary eye disease apart from specified exceptions.

Ask for the parents' registration numbers and check the actual result, date of examination and, where possible, information about siblings, previous offspring and other close relatives. This provides more information than a general statement that the dogs are health tested.

DNA tests can be valuable when they are used for the right disease and the results of both parents are considered together. A prcd-PRA test, for example, can only provide information about that particular form of retinal disease; it does not exclude other eye diseases or replace a clinical eye examination. For recessive conditions such as EIC, a healthy carrier need not become ill, but the other parent's result must be known to avoid producing affected puppies. A large DNA panel is therefore not proof of good overall health.

Excess weight puts strain on the body and should not be accepted as a normal breed trait. Feel the ribs and look for a clear waist from above and from the side. Weigh the dog regularly and adjust meals, chews and training rewards according to its body condition. Research has linked a POMC gene variant in some Labradors with greater food motivation and higher bodyweight, but not every Labrador carries the variant and obesity is not inevitable.

## History & Origins

The Labrador Retriever has early roots on the coast of Newfoundland in Canada, where dogs of a similar type helped fishermen retrieve objects and catches from the water. During the nineteenth century, such dogs were brought to Britain, where the breed was developed into a specialised retrieving gundog.

The Kennel Club in Britain recognised the Labrador Retriever as a breed in 1903. Its work after the shot shaped several qualities that still characterise the breed: an interest in searching for, carrying and delivering objects, a willingness to cooperate at a distance and an ability to work in water and difficult terrain. Labradors now work in shooting, dog sports and several public-service roles, but their working heritage remains relevant even for someone primarily looking for a companion.

## Living with the Breed

The Labrador Retriever can suit many homes when the owner wants to share an active daily life with the dog and has time for both training and recovery. A garden is not essential and living in a flat can work, but the home cannot replace walks, scent work and other meaningful outdoor activity. The dog should also be taught to remain quiet and settled in stairwells and other shared areas.

Around children, adult supervision, clear rules and an undisturbed resting place for the dog are essential. A young or excited Labrador is strong enough to knock over a small child without intending harm. Children should not be responsible for walking a dog they cannot physically manage.

Many Labradors live happily with other dogs and cats, but breed alone does not determine the outcome. Introduce animals gradually, prevent chasing and crowding, and give the cat high or separate escape routes. Do not leave them alone together until their interactions are calm and predictable.

Time alone needs to be taught in stages. A young puppy should not simply be left; begin with very brief periods once the dog feels secure and increase them only when it can relax. The length of time an adult can cope with being alone varies, so judge the dog's behaviour rather than relying on a universal maximum.

Before buying a puppy, you should be able to get clear answers to these questions:

- What activities and kind of daily life has the litter been bred for?
- How do the parents work, behave around people and dogs, and settle in practice?
- What official hip, elbow and eye results are available, and what is known about close relatives?
- Are BPH descriptions, field-trial results or other relevant assessments and achievements available, and what do they show?
- How does the breeder match the different puppies with the lives of prospective owners?

The best match depends on more than colour, sex and a line label. Choose a breeder who can describe the dogs' actual qualities, show verifiable health results and speak honestly about variation within the litter.

## Quick Facts

The Havanese is a small FCI-recognised companion dog in Group 9. The FCI lists Cuba as the country of origin and describes how the dog type reached the island from the western Mediterranean. The breed standard gives a height of 23–27 centimetres, with a tolerance of two centimetres in either direction, but no official weight range. Assess likely adult size from height, build, body condition and the parents rather than a promised number of kilograms.

The standard’s ideal is an attentive, affectionate, cheerful, friendly and playful dog. That is a breeding goal, not a guarantee of how every individual will behave with children, unfamiliar people or other animals. Swedish BPH behavioural data instead shows clear variation within the breed.

The long coat is the breed’s biggest day-to-day commitment. It needs to be combed all the way to the skin and may require frequent care, especially during the change from puppy to adult coat. Having little or no undercoat does not make the Havanese allergy-free; dog allergens come from sources including skin particles and saliva and vary between individuals.

## Appearance & Coat

The Havanese should be small, low to the ground and sturdy without becoming heavy or restricted. Body length should relate to height at the withers by roughly 4:3. The front legs should be straight and parallel, and movement light, springy and directed forward. When assessing a dog, look for free movement without obvious lameness, uneven loading or front legs that bow markedly outwards. A profuse coat must not hide poor function.

The breed standard specifies a height of 23–27 centimetres. The stated tolerance extends the accepted range to 21–29 centimetres. The standard gives no ideal weight. Two dogs of the same height can therefore weigh differently because of frame, muscle and body condition. A dog close to either limit is not automatically better or worse, but the Swedish breeding strategy describes a trend towards larger, heavier dogs and stresses that the breed should retain its toy-dog character.

Under the standard, an adult’s outer coat should be very long, about 12–18 centimetres, soft and straight or wavy; it may also form curly strands. The undercoat is poorly developed and often absent. White, fawn, black, Havana brown, tobacco brown and reddish brown occur, as do patches and tan markings in permitted colours. Do not let colour outweigh health, temperament and sound function when choosing a puppy.

The standard calls for a natural coat and does not allow a show coat to be cut to an even length, with limited exceptions around the feet, forehead and muzzle. This is a rule about breed-typical appearance, not a reason to leave painful mats in place. Work a comb through small sections and pay particular attention behind the ears, in the armpits, on the legs and under a harness or collar. Frequency depends on length, texture, moisture and how readily the coat tangles; daily attention may be needed during the coat change.

Introduce the puppy gradually to combing, paw handling, nail trimming and tooth brushing, and pause if it becomes frightened or stressed. Bathe when the coat needs cleaning and dry it thoroughly. Brush the teeth daily with dog toothpaste, as small dogs are more commonly affected by tartar and periodontal disease.

## Temperament & Personality

Under the standard, the Havanese should be attentive, friendly and playful, but individuals differ in how they meet the world. The standard describes a desired temperament. It should not be used as proof that a puppy will automatically be good with children, quiet, fearless or easy for a first-time owner.

The Swedish Kennel Club’s 2026 BPH analysis includes 233 assessed Havanese. Among the participating dogs, there was substantial variation in how intensely they greeted unfamiliar people, how much they played, how curious they were and how they reacted to unstable surfaces. Many showed low social fear and did not threaten strangers, but the data covered only about 1.5 per cent of Swedish-born dogs from the analysed birth years. The findings therefore describe the participating dogs, not every Havanese.

BPH is a description, not a test that a dog passes or fails. Ask to see the parents’ full results and examine the individual reactions. Meet the puppy’s mother in her home environment and observe whether she can greet, choose not to engage, and recover from something unexpected without prolonged fear or stress.

Young children and the dog need adult supervision, and the dog needs a protected resting place. Its small body can be injured by rough play even if the dog seeks contact. Introductions to dogs and cats should be gradual, with distance, escape routes and a way to separate the animals. Previous experiences and the individual dog’s social skills matter more than the breed name.

## Training & Exercise

The Havanese needs daily movement, mental activity and practice in settling. There is no well-supported number of minutes that suits every dog. Adjust walks, play and other exertion to age, fitness, health, weather and recovery.

The breed was developed for companionship and often enjoys cooperation. Scent work, tricks, everyday obedience, rally obedience and appropriately adapted agility can provide useful variety, but competition is not required. Prioritise recall, loose-lead walking, waiting, releasing objects, being examined calmly and settling while things happen nearby. Use reward-based training with clear criteria and avoid physical or psychological coercion.

Alertness may become barking when someone moves through a stairwell or when the dog expects activity. Reduce unnecessary watching at windows and doors, reward calm behaviour and give the dog a clear alternative task. Treat grooming and short periods alone as skills to train from the start. House training is built through frequent opportunities to go outside, supervision and rewards, not punishment or an assumption that the breed is difficult to train.

## Health

The Swedish breed-specific breeding strategy describes the Havanese as a relatively healthy breed, but a careful puppy purchase still requires checking recommendations and actual results. Current Swedish Kennel Club registration rules contain no breed-specific Level 2 or 3 requirement for patellas, eyes or heart in the Havanese. That does not make the examinations unimportant. The breed club’s recommendations are more extensive and must be distinguished from formal conditions for registering a litter.

The breed club recommends that breeding dogs receive a patella examination after one year of age and have no abnormal findings. It also recommends eye examinations roughly annually from one year to at least six years, with a result no more than one year old at mating, and a heart examination with no abnormal findings before mating. These recommendations are conditions for the breed club’s puppy referral service, but they are not the same as an SKK registration requirement.

Ask for the dogs’ registration numbers and verify the result, date and actual status in SKK Avelsdata. The words “health-tested” are not enough. Patella results can be registered from twelve months and are graded from 0, normal, to 3, a permanently luxated kneecap. Even a good individual result should be read alongside information about parents, siblings and previous offspring, because the family picture provides more information than a single examination.

Straight front legs and free movement matter to health as well as show results. The Swedish breeding strategy highlights bowed front legs, isolated cases of a shortened ulna, known as short ulna, and back pain and disc herniation. A study of 355 Norwegian Havanese found an association between an FGF4 variant on chromosome 18 and leg length/front-leg shape. It demonstrates an association in the population studied, but not that every dog with the variant develops clinical problems or that a particular DNA test is a Swedish requirement.

Watch the dog walk and turn, check that it loads its front legs evenly, and ask about lameness, pain, back problems and surgery in close relatives. Also ask about recurring eye problems, heart murmurs and persistent itching or other skin problems, as the Swedish breeding strategy identifies these areas. A veterinarian should assess symptoms; a breeder should be able to show what has actually been examined and why.

## History & Origins

The Havanese has a documented connection with both the western Mediterranean and Cuba. The FCI standard describes small companion dogs developing along the Spanish and Italian coasts and being taken to Cuba at an early stage by Italian sea captains. Cuba is listed as the country of origin, while the FCI holds patronage for the standard.

The old Cuban bloodlines disappeared on the island, but descendant dogs survived in the United States and were used to rebuild the modern population. The Swedish breed-specific breeding strategy describes a very small founder population, which helps explain why genetic diversity and restrained use of individual breeding dogs remain important. This is better documented than claims that the breed is Cuba’s official national dog or has an exactly known founding year.

The first dogs of the breed were imported and registered in Sweden in 1988, and the first Swedish litters were registered in 1989. Since then, the Havanese has grown greatly in popularity as a companion dog.

## Living with the Breed

The Havanese can live successfully in many types of home if the owner has time for coat care, daily activity and training. A flat is not automatically a problem, but stairwell sounds, distance to a toileting area and the opportunity to train calm behaviour must be manageable. A garden does not replace walks, exposure to different environments or companionship.

Time alone must be taught gradually. Start with very short periods when the dog feels secure and increase them only when it can rest without barking, pacing or showing other signs of stress. A puppy cannot be left on the same basis as an adult dog. Plan how working days will be managed before buying.

Try the grooming routine in practice before deciding. Ask the breeder to show how a comb is worked all the way to the skin, how long a complete session takes and how the coat changes during adolescence. If the family cannot keep the coat free of mats, it needs a different care plan developed with a knowledgeable groomer; breed-typical appearance must never take priority over the dog’s welfare.

Before buying, meet the puppy with its mother where the dogs live and verify registration numbers, pedigree and identity. Compare the parents’ patella, eye and heart results with the breed club’s current recommendations, and ask about temperament, front legs, backs and skin in close relatives. A puppy born in Sweden must be at least eight weeks old at collection and have a veterinary inspection certificate no more than seven days old at that time.

The best choice is not automatically the smallest, fluffiest or most outgoing puppy. Choose a dog from parents that move freely, have documented examinations, recover well and can be handled calmly. That tells you more about future daily life than colour, a marketed weight or labels such as “allergy-friendly” and “perfect family dog”.

## Appearance & Coat

A Siberian Husky should look like an endurance worker, not a heavy freight dog or a fragile sprinter. The body is moderately compact, slightly longer than tall and built for light, fluid movement. Healthy body condition and well-developed muscle matter more to function than a heavy or exceptionally fluffy appearance.

The almond-shaped eyes may be brown, blue, one of each or parti-coloured. Blue eyes are therefore permitted, but eye colour says nothing about a dog's working ability, temperament or suitability for a particular home.

The medium-length coat is double, with a soft, dense undercoat and straight guard hairs. The undercoat may be absent during shedding without this being abnormal. Permitted coat colours are black, grey, agouti, sable, red and white, either solid or in multiple shades and patterns. Merle and brindle, however, are not permitted patterns in the breed standard.

Brush according to the dog's actual needs and work gently through loose undercoat during shedding. There is no fixed schedule that suits every dog or season. The breed standard permits trimming between the toes and around the feet, but not other cosmetic trimming. Clipping for a medical reason is, of course, a veterinary matter rather than coat styling.

## Temperament & Personality

A typical Siberian Husky is friendly, gentle, alert and outgoing, while also being independent and strongly influenced by its pack-oriented background. It should not be overly suspicious of strangers, possessive as a guard dog or aggressive towards other dogs. This describes the breed ideal, not a guarantee for every individual.

The pack instinct has made the breed skilled at working closely with other dogs. It does not mean that every Husky will automatically live well with every dog in a household. Play style, management of food and other resources, sex, age, previous experience and a calm introduction still matter.

Prey drive is one of the most important traits to understand before buying. Many dogs of the breed are difficult to exercise off lead even when recall has been trained carefully. A long line or a securely enclosed area provides freedom without making recall the only safeguard. With cats, the outcome depends on the individual dog, its upbringing and the cat's behaviour, but peaceful cohabitation should never be assumed. Small mammals and birds need physical separation that does not rely on the dog choosing not to chase.

The breed standard's friendly temperament does not automatically make the dog safe with children either. Children and dogs need to learn one another's signals, an adult should be present with young children, and the dog must have an undisturbed place to rest.

## Training & Exercise

The Siberian Husky needs a great deal of exercise, training and stimulation, but a universal number of hours per day gives a false impression. Requirements vary with age, fitness, health, temperature, surface and the difficulty of the work. It matters more that the dog can do work suited to the breed, recover well and settle at home than that a certain amount of time has elapsed.

Pulling in a team, cross-country skiing with a dog and well-planned dryland work are close to the breed's function. Load and distance must be built up gradually. A beginner will benefit greatly from learning about harnesses, lines, commands, overtaking and assessing weather and surfaces through an experienced sled dog club. The breed club's sled dog trials, including DP20+, are used to assess function, temperament and the dog's working ability as a polar sled dog.

Daily life also needs calm walks, scent work, cooperation and recovery. Prioritise the following from an early stage:

- walking politely on lead and remaining calm while being harnessed;
- stopping, changing direction and waiting before a start;
- secure routines at doors, cars, gates and kennels;
- recall as a trained skill, without making it the only protection against a chase;
- settling, handling and the ability to wind down after work.

Training should be positive, clear and well planned. Harsher methods will not make an independent dog more cooperative and may damage your relationship. In warm weather, reduce the workload or move it to cooler parts of the day. A thick coat and exercise increase the risk of overheating; stop if the dog pants heavily, becomes weak or uncoordinated, or is unusually tired. Let the dog's behaviour, physical signs and the conditions guide you, not a single temperature threshold.

## Health

The Swedish breed-specific breeding strategy describes the Siberian Husky as generally healthy, but the evidence has an important limitation: relatively few dogs have been examined for hips, elbows and eyes. The fact that most tested dogs have been healthy does not prove that every line is free from inherited problems.

Under SKK's current registration rules, the Siberian Husky is not one of the breeds with a special requirement for recorded hip status. It is therefore incorrect to describe hip scoring or an eye examination as a universal Swedish registration requirement for the breed. Results may still be useful. Ask the breeder to show which examinations have actually been carried out, why they were chosen and what the results are in parents, siblings and older relatives.

DNA tests are also available for three documented variants: SHPN1, SPS1 and HUU. SHPN1 is a progressive neurological disease that affects mobility. It is thought to be inherited recessively, but not every dog with two copies of the variant develops clear signs. The Swedish breed club has specifically drawn attention to known SHPN1 carriers in Swedish pedigrees. A carrier is not the same as a sick dog; what matters is that a mating is planned with knowledge of both parents' status. SPS1 concerns a form of tremor in puppies, while HUU involves elevated uric acid levels with a risk of urate stones. The existence of a test does not make all three mandatory for every Swedish litter. Ask which tests are relevant to the particular family and request the original laboratory results.

Also consider how the dogs actually stand up to work. Ask how older relatives have coped with training, whether recurring lameness, paw problems, neurological signs or urinary stones have occurred, and at what age any problem began. Keep the dog lean, build fitness gradually and investigate changes in gait rather than training through them.

## History & Origins

The Siberian Husky developed as a sled dog in north-eastern Siberia, while the USA is the breed's official country of origin under the FCI standard. Its original job was to carry light loads at moderate speed over long distances, a function that still explains the breed's size, movement, pack cooperation and endurance.

The Siberian dogs attracted attention in Alaska when a team entered the All Alaska Sweepstakes in 1909 and finished third. The following year, teams made up of these dogs finished first, second and fourth. Leonhard Seppala won the race for three consecutive years from 1915 to 1917 and later became one of the drivers in the 1925 serum relay to Nome, in which dog teams carried diphtheria serum across Alaska.

The American Kennel Club recognised the Siberian Husky in 1930. The FCI granted the breed definitive recognition in 1966. These dates are documented. There is, however, no firm support for popular stories claiming that the temperament of all modern dogs comes from their ancestors sleeping in family tents.

## Living with the Breed

The Siberian Husky works best in a home where sled dog life is part of the plan, not an activity that might be tried later. The breed can be a first dog, but this requires unusually thorough preparation, support from experienced sled dog drivers and a routine that already has room for work, safe transport, control and recovery.

Flat living can work. Floor area matters less than whether the dog's needs are met and it can settle indoors. In a building with poor sound insulation, you also need a plan if the dog makes noise when aroused or left. Safety begins in the stairwell, lift and entrance: use a lead and routines that prevent the dog getting into traffic or chasing wildlife.

Alone-time training should begin in very small steps once the dog feels secure, and the time left alone should increase only while it can remain calm. The breed has a strong pack instinct, and some individuals struggle even after thoughtful training. Plan in advance for a dog sitter, day care or a routine in which the dog can accompany you. Another dog may provide company but does not guarantee that being left will be easy.

When choosing a breeder, it is better to assess the dogs than to choose by the label “working line” or “show line”. Ask to see the parents in daily life and at work. Ask what distances and surfaces they train on, how they recover, how they work in a team and how they are handled at rest, during transport and when meeting people or dogs. Check registered sled-work results and health information in SKK Hunddata and Avelsdata.

The breed club's puppy list requires membership and SKK registration for both parents; a place on that list is therefore not in itself proof of working ability or completed health tests. The breeder should be able to explain why the pairing was chosen and show specific information about function, temperament, health and older relatives. That tells you more about what to expect from the puppy than coat colour, eye colour or a line label.

## Appearance & Coat

The Miniature Pinscher is compact and elegant but should look neither fragile nor exaggeratedly small. Its body should be as square as possible, with height and length roughly equal, and the short coat makes its outline easy to see. Dogs and bitches have the same standard measurements: a height of 25–30 cm at the withers and a weight of 4–6 kg.

The breed has dark, oval eyes and either erect ears or V-shaped ears that fold forwards. The tail is natural. Tail docking is prohibited in Sweden.

The breed standard calls for harmonious, free, ground-covering movement with a firm back. The high, exaggerated front action sometimes called a hackney gait is therefore not the ideal under the Swedish standard; it is specifically listed as a fault.

The coat should be short, dense, smooth and glossy. It normally needs no more than an occasional once-over with a soft brush or grooming mitt, plus a bath when the dog is dirty. Use the same opportunity to check the nails, skin, ears and teeth so that small changes are noticed early.

The Swedish and international FCI standards recognise two colour varieties:

- solid deer red, reddish-brown or dark red-brown
- jet black with clearly defined red or rust-coloured tan markings

Brown, blue and other so-called special colours are not included in the Swedish FCI standard. If a puppy is advertised in an unusual colour, it is sensible to ask which country’s standard the breeder is referring to.

Because the Miniature Pinscher is both small and short-coated, it may need help keeping warm in Swedish winter weather. Adjust the length of the walk to the individual dog, keep it moving and use a well-fitting coat in cold weather if it becomes tense, lifts its paws, shivers or seeks warmth. Not every dog needs a coat at the same temperature.

## Temperament & Personality

The Miniature Pinscher is typically lively, spirited, self-assured and alert. It often wants to stay close to its family, learns quickly and notices small changes around it. These qualities can make the breed both enjoyable to train and demanding to live with: a dog that quickly discovers the right reward will also soon learn which noises, doors and movements make people react.

Its watchdog instinct should be taken seriously without being encouraged. A Miniature Pinscher may announce someone’s arrival, but in a home with neighbours the aim should be for the dog to register a noise and then settle again. Start early with calm practice around the doorbell, visitors and sounds in communal hallways. Reward quiet behaviour before barking has developed into a long sequence.

Swedish behaviour assessments give a more nuanced picture than labels such as ‘tough’ or ‘stubborn’. Results from BPH, Sweden’s Behaviour and Personality Assessment for Dogs, show curiosity, interest in food and interest in the dog’s own toy among the assessed population. Many of those dogs were less interested in greeting or playing with strangers than with people they knew. The results apply to the dogs that took part, not to every Miniature Pinscher. When choosing a puppy, the everyday behaviour of its parents and close relatives matters more than a general breed description.

Fear, aggression or constant stress should not be dismissed as the breed being a ‘big dog in a small body’. A sound Miniature Pinscher may have clear personal boundaries and be reserved, but it should be able to recover and cope with everyday life.

## Training & Exercise

The Miniature Pinscher needs physical exercise and mental tasks every day, but no single number of minutes suits every dog. Age, health, pace, terrain and what the dog gets to do matter more than a number. A relaxed sniffing walk, a few short training sessions and some play can offer more than an equally long but stressful outing with no chance to explore.

A good routine combines:

- walks that allow the dog to sniff and move through varied surroundings
- short sessions on engagement, walking with you, recall and lead manners
- scent games, problem-solving or tricks
- play with a clear beginning and end
- undisturbed rest and practice in settling down

Train kindly and consistently. Short sessions, clear tasks and rewards the dog genuinely values usually work better than nagging or harsh corrections. Build recall step by step on a long line, moving to more difficult surroundings only when the dog succeeds somewhere calm. Use a lead wherever traffic, open doors or a lack of fencing could turn one quick mistake into an accident.

Get the puppy used to nail trimming, mouth and tooth checks, a harness, a coat and being lifted safely. Include calm-time practice too. A dog that is given more fast-paced activity whenever it becomes overexcited does not automatically learn how to switch off.

## Health

The Miniature Pinscher is described as a relatively healthy breed, but puppy buyers in Sweden should pay particular attention to kneecaps, eyes and teeth. These are the priorities in the Swedish breed club’s breeding strategy adopted in 2025.

Patellar luxation means that the kneecap can move out of its normal position and may cause pain or lameness. The breed club recommends an official patellar examination, recorded as clear, for breeding dogs over twelve months old. Ask to see the result for both parents and check that it has been registered rather than relying on a verbal assurance.

An eye examination is recommended before breeding. The dog should be at least one year old at its first examination, and the result should ideally be no more than three years old at the time of mating. A finding must be assessed against the veterinary breeding advice, so ‘examined’ does not automatically mean ‘no findings’.

Dental health is a clear area for improvement. In the breed club’s health survey of 298 anonymous responses, 33 per cent reported tartar problems and 14 per cent reported periodontitis. Because these figures are based on owners’ own reports, they do not show how common the problems are across the whole breed. They do, however, show why dental care should not be treated as an afterthought. Brush the teeth, preferably every day, and introduce handling gradually. During the change of teeth at around five to six months, check that retained deciduous teeth are not affecting the adult bite.

Ask the breeder about health and longevity among close relatives, the family’s dental health, and whether the parents have completed BPH or MH, the Swedish mental assessment. No examination can guarantee a problem-free dog, but documented results make risk easier to judge.

## History & Origins

The Miniature Pinscher is a German pinscher breed with a history as a ratter and watchdog, not a smaller version of the Dobermann. Similarities in outline and black-and-red colouring have caused the misunderstanding, but the breed standard describes the Miniature Pinscher as a miniaturised image of the German Pinscher.

Small, smooth-coated pinscher types have deep roots in Germany. The organised development of the breed as we know it gathered pace in the 1870s, and the German pinscher club was founded in 1895. Miniature Pinschers were already numerous around 1900; the German stud book recorded about 1,300 individuals in 1925.

The first documented import to Sweden arrived in 1905. The breed is now chiefly a companion dog, but its history can still be seen in its vigilance, speed and readiness to investigate small movements in its surroundings.

## Living with the Breed

The Miniature Pinscher can live well in either a flat or a house, but its small size does not make daily life effortless. In a flat, training around noise, planned activity and the ability to settle are especially important. A garden may make toilet breaks easier, but it does not replace walks, exposure to different surroundings or time with the owner.

Being left alone is a trained skill and varies between individuals. A young puppy should not be left alone. Start only when the puppy feels secure in its new home, leave for a very short time and extend the period when it remains calm. An adult dog that has been trained gradually may cope with a few hours, but a full working day away from home requires another arrangement. Take the training back a step if the dog barks, howls, paces or shows other signs of distress.

The breed can be a good family dog when an adult guides interactions with children. A Miniature Pinscher is small enough to be hurt if it is dropped, stepped on or lifted incorrectly. Young children and dogs should always have an adult present, and the dog needs its own resting place where it will be left undisturbed. The child’s age matters less than the family’s ability to respect the dog’s signals.

Introductions to other dogs should be calm and controlled. Living with a cat depends on the individuals and the way they are introduced. Particular care is needed around rodents, birds and other very small animals because the breed’s background as a ratter remains relevant; do not leave them together without secure separation.

Before buying a puppy, look beyond the advert. Ask for registered patella and eye results, enquire about dental health and BPH or MH, and, if possible, meet the mother and other adult relatives. Ask the breeder how their dogs respond to visitors, noises and handling, and how readily they settle again. The best match is not necessarily the puppy that looks boldest for five minutes, but the one with a good chance of thriving in the life you can offer.

## Quick Facts

The Papillon is a small, lively and quick-learning companion dog that often suits someone who wants to combine closeness with walks, training and everyday enrichment. The breed belongs to the Épagneul Nain Continental, or Continental Toy Spaniel. The Papillon has erect ears, while the Phalène variety has drop ears. In Sweden they are registered according to ear carriage, and a dog can be re-registered if its ears develop differently from the initial assessment.

- **Height at the withers:** about 28 cm according to the breed standard

Measurements in a breed standard describe an ideal, not a promise that every adult dog will be exactly that size. For a prospective owner, the parents’ size, the dog’s body condition and sound construction are therefore more useful than pursuing a particular figure or an extremely small individual.

## Appearance & Coat

The Papillon should be a harmoniously built toy dog that is graceful yet robust. The body is slightly longer than the height at the withers, and movement should be free, light and elegant. Its small size calls for care around falls and play with much larger dogs, but the breed standard does not describe the Papillon as a fragile dog.

The large ears are the breed’s most distinctive feature. In the Papillon they stand erect and are carried obliquely outwards, resembling a butterfly’s wings. The Phalène instead has mobile drop ears. The difference is therefore ear carriage; both are varieties of the same Continental Toy Spaniel and can be born in the same litter.

The coat is single, without an undercoat, and should be abundant, glossy and slightly wavy rather than curly. It is short on the head and fronts of the legs but longer over the body, ears, chest, thighs and tail. White is the ground colour and must predominate on the body and legs. Coloured patches may be of different colours, while the lips, eye rims and nose should be well pigmented under the standard.

Coat care is usually manageable if tangles are prevented. Check the coat regularly and comb especially behind the ears and on the inner thighs, where the Swedish Kennel Club says tangles may readily form. Bathe the dog when it is dirty; no fixed calendar suits every individual. Check the nails, paws, ears and skin at the same time. Base care on the dog’s actual coat and daily life rather than a fixed bathing or clipping routine.

## Temperament & Personality

The Papillon is typically alert, lively and quick to learn, with a marked interest in people and activities. Its small body often contains more willingness to work than the label “lapdog” suggests. A Papillon may enjoy both close company and tasks involving concentration, problem-solving or body awareness.

Breed descriptions should not, however, be read as a guarantee of a particular personality. The Swedish Kennel Club’s BPH behavioural analysis shows considerable variation among participating Papillons, including how intensely they greet strangers, how readily they play and how curious they are. The results apply to the dogs assessed and primarily show why the individual, family lines, early experiences and continuing training all matter.

Alertness may show in how quickly the dog notices sounds, visitors and movement outside the home. This need not become a major barking problem, but it is sensible to reward calm behaviour from the start, give the dog an alternative task at the door and avoid allowing every signal to lead to excitement. Ask the breeder how the parents function in daily life, not only how they behave at shows or during training.

## Training & Exercise

The Papillon needs physical movement and mental enrichment every day, but no single number of minutes suits every dog. A healthy, fit adult can often join surprisingly substantial walks, while a puppy, older dog or individual with a health problem needs a different load. Adjust activity to age, fitness, weather and recovery rather than treating body size as a measure of need.

The breed often learns quickly, including things you did not intend to teach. Reward-based training with clear criteria works well. Vary everyday obedience, scent work, balance exercises and small problem-solving tasks, and finish while the dog can still concentrate. Agility, obedience and other dog sports can be a good fit when training is developed gradually and the surface, obstacles and load are adapted to the dog’s size and maturity.

A small dog needs the same care with recall and exposure to different environments as a large one. Practise engagement and returning in safe places before allowing freedom where traffic, wildlife or larger dogs could present a risk. Also teach the dog to settle between activities. A Papillon given only high-energy tasks may become very good at getting excited but less skilled at relaxing again.

## Health

The Swedish Kennel Club describes the Papillon as a generally sound and often long-lived breed, but responsible health screening remains important. For Swedish litters, pap-PRA1 is the clearest formal checkpoint. Pap-PRA1 is an inherited form of progressive retinal atrophy, or PRA, which damages the retina. It is autosomal recessive: a carrier has one copy of the variant and does not develop that particular form, while a genetically affected dog has inherited the variant from both parents.

The Swedish Kennel Club’s registration rules require both parents to have an official DNA result for pap-PRA1 or to be recorded as hereditarily clear. Two carriers may not be mated, and an affected dog may not be used for breeding. A pap-PRA1 DNA test does not, however, rule out every other genetic cause of PRA or other eye diseases. An eye examination therefore serves a different purpose. The Swedish breed club, Papillon-Ringen, recommends an eye examination after three years of age to monitor other eye changes.

Patellar luxation, in which the kneecap can move out of its normal position, occurs in the breed. The breed club wants breeding dogs to have a known normal patella result before mating. This is an important recommendation, but the current Swedish Kennel Club rules do not list patella status as a specific registration requirement for the Papillon. Ask to see the result rather than assuming registration itself covers it.

In other countries, recommended programmes may include additional tests. For example, the UK’s Royal Kennel Club lists an NAD test among the additional checks for the Papillon. This does not make NAD a Swedish registration requirement. Ask the breeder to distinguish between mandatory Swedish results, breed-club recommendations and optional additional tests.

Oral health also deserves attention. Small dog breeds are more often affected by periodontal disease, and daily tooth brushing is a simple way to reduce the risk of severe tartar and painful periodontitis. Bad breath, bleeding gums or reluctance to chew should be assessed by a vet.

## History & Origins

The Papillon originates from France and Belgium and is the erect-eared variety of the Continental Toy Spaniel. The type has been documented since the 16th century and appeared as a companion dog at European courts. The name Papillon means butterfly in French and refers to the large, obliquely carried ears with long fringes. Phalène means moth and is the name used for the drop-eared variety.

The FCI recognises the breed as number 77 in the companion and toy dog group. The modern standard retains both the Papillon and the Phalène. Its history explains the breed’s role as a companion, but the modern Papillon is not merely decorative: its liveliness and readiness to learn are evident in many present-day dog activities.

## Living with the Breed

The Papillon can live well in either a flat or a house when given daily activity, closeness and help learning to settle. The size of the home matters less than the shape of everyday life. A home where many sounds carry requires extra work on calm behaviour around the door, hallway and windows, as an alert individual may otherwise begin to comment on every change.

The breed can live well with children, but this depends on the dog’s temperament, the child’s behaviour and adult supervision. Teach children to leave the dog undisturbed while it sleeps or eats, not to pick it up or grab it, and to play at floor level under supervision. This protects both dog and child and is more accurate than a general “child-friendly” label.

The same individual assessment is needed with other animals. A Papillon can live with dogs or cats, but introductions should be calm and gradual. Give the animals separate resources and places to retreat, and supervise play where there is a large difference in size. A friendly large dog can injure a very small dog accidentally.

Being left alone is a skill, not something that can be assumed from breed. Accustom the dog gradually to short periods alone and increase them only while it remains relaxed. Barking, whining, restless pacing, destructive behaviour or refusing a normally valued reward can indicate that the step was too large.

Before buying a puppy, check more than its appearance. Ask to see the parents’ registered pap-PRA1 results, patella status and any eye results, and ask why that particular mating was chosen. Meet the dam and notice how the dogs recover after new sounds and visitors. For a puppy registered with the Swedish Kennel Club, you should receive the registration certificate, the Swedish Kennel Club contract and a veterinary inspection certificate no more than seven days old on the day of handover. Screening reduces risk but can never guarantee a particular state of health or personality; open documentation and realistic expectations therefore matter more than promises.

- The breed standard gives a height of 22–27 cm and a maximum weight of 3 kg. The same measurements apply to males and females.
- The Russkiy Toy should be active, very cheerful, curious and strongly attached to its owner, but neither shy nor aggressive.
- The smooth-haired variety has a short, glossy coat without an undercoat. The longhaired variety has a moderately long coat and pronounced feathering on the ears, legs and tail.

## Appearance & Coat

The Russkiy Toy is small, elegant and almost square, with long legs, fine bone and lean muscle. It should look balanced and mobile, rather than heavy or excessively frail. Its large, thin, upright ears are a defining feature. The standard specifies 22–27 cm at the withers and no more than 3 kg, with 25 cm and 2.3 kg given as preferred reference points. No breeder can promise the final size of an individual puppy, so look at both parents and closely related adult dogs.

Both coat varieties belong to the same breed. The smooth coat is short, close-lying and glossy, with no undercoat or bald patches. On the longhaired variety, the coat on the body and neck is about 3–5 cm long. It should lie close and be straight or slightly wavy, with pronounced feathering on the legs and tail. In an adult longhaired dog, the long hair on the ears forms the characteristic fringes.

Accepted colours include black, brown, blue or a very pale diluted shade with tan markings, as well as red in different shades with or without darker hair tips, cream and fawn. Small differences in colour say nothing about a dog's temperament or ability to cope with everyday life.

Coat care is generally straightforward. Check the skin and coat regularly, comb the longhaired variety's fringes before tangles develop and bathe the dog when it is dirty. The frequency depends on coat volume, weather and lifestyle, not a fixed weekly timetable. Check the nails, paws, ears and skin at the same time. The natural tail is of medium length; tail docking is prohibited in Sweden.

## Temperament & Personality

A typical Russkiy Toy should be active, very cheerful, curious and closely attached to its person. This describes the breed ideal, not a guarantee of how every individual will react. Genetics, upbringing, experience and the situation itself all influence whether a dog greets unfamiliar people and places with confidence, caution or anxiety.

Many individuals quickly notice sounds and movement. Barking can therefore become an everyday issue, particularly in communal stairwells or at windows. Start early by rewarding calm behaviour, teach the dog to move away from the door or window on cue and provide an undisturbed resting place. Picking the dog up whenever something happens rarely addresses the underlying problem; with your support, it needs to practise coping with situations that are challenging but still manageable.

Socialisation does not mean making a puppy greet everyone. The aim is for it to see people, dogs, traffic, different surfaces and other ordinary sights without being pushed beyond what it can handle. Choose calm canine contacts and allow the puppy to increase the distance. The breed is so small that a friendly but boisterous larger dog can cause injury without intending to.

When assessing a puppy's likely temperament, meet the mother and, if possible, other adult relatives. Ask how they respond to visitors, noise, handling, dog encounters and recovery after a surprise. A BPH behavioural assessment can add information about the reactions of dogs that have taken part, but it is not a simple pass-or-fail test.

## Training & Exercise

The Russkiy Toy needs to move, explore and learn every day. Its size does not remove the need for walks or mental activity, although the amount and intensity must suit the dog's age, health, the weather and the individual. A good routine includes several opportunities to go outside, walks with time to sniff, play, brief skills sessions and time to settle. There is no authoritative number of minutes that suits every dog of the breed.

Reward-based, progressive training suits this quick dog, which is often keen to work with its owner. Prioritise recall, calm dog encounters, walking on a loose lead, comfortable handling of the paws and mouth, and the ability to relax in a designated place. Also practise waiting at doors and teach the dog not to launch itself from someone's arms or from furniture. For a dog weighing no more than 3 kg, controlled movement and safe everyday habits matter.

The breed may enjoy activities such as rally obedience, scent work, tracking, canine freestyle and agility with equipment and surfaces suited to its size. The activity should build confidence and cooperation, not merely raise arousal. If the dog becomes scattered, barks more or struggles to settle, it may need easier tasks and more recovery rather than automatically needing more exercise.

Puppies should be allowed to explore and develop strength without long forced distances or repeated high jumps. Increase demands gradually. Cold, wet weather and strong heat can affect a very small dog quickly, so adjust the outing to how the dog is actually moving and feeling.

## Health

The most important verifiable health checks for the Russkiy Toy in Sweden concern the knees, eyes and mouth. This does not mean that every dog will become ill; it gives prospective owners clear records to check and breeders evidence on which to base mating decisions.

The Russkiy Toy is covered by a Swedish health programme for patellar luxation. For a litter to be registered, both parents must have an official patella result recorded before mating. The examination can be performed from 12 months of age by a veterinarian with the required specialist qualification. Results are graded from 0 to 3. Check the dog's identity, the examination date and the result rather than accepting only that the knees have been “checked”.

The Swedish Russkiy Toy Club's breeding policy is stricter than the registration requirement itself. Since 18 March 2026, the club's policy allows a maximum result of 0/1, and such a dog may only be mated to one with 0/0. The club also requires an official eye certificate no more than one year old for its breeder, puppy referral and stud-dog lists. It is important to distinguish the club's policy from the Swedish Kennel Club's binding registration rule.

Individual findings including different forms of cataract, progressive retinal atrophy and vitreous prolapse have been documented in the breed. This supports checking current eye results, but it does not mean that every Russkiy Toy carries the same risk or that one old examination describes the dog's eye status for life. If a result contains a finding, ask for its exact diagnostic name and the examining veterinarian's recommendation.

Teeth need attention from puppyhood. Check that the deciduous teeth fall out as the adult teeth emerge and ask a veterinarian to assess any that remain. Introduce tooth brushing early, preferably daily, to reduce plaque and tartar. Claims about heart disease, hypoglycaemia or a general need for DNA tests do not have sufficiently current breed-specific support to be presented as universal risks. Such questions need an individual veterinary assessment.

## History & Origins

The Russkiy Toy's earlier origins are not fully established, so a reliable account begins with its documented development during the twentieth century. The English Toy Terrier was a popular small dog in Russia at the beginning of the century. Between 1920 and 1950, almost all organised breeding in the Soviet Union ceased and numbers fell sharply.

In the mid-1950s, Russian breeders began rebuilding a distinct toy-terrier type. Many of the dogs had no pedigree, and the new standard came to differ clearly from that of the English Toy Terrier. The Russkiy Toy subsequently developed as a breed in its own right.

The longhaired variety has an unusually well-documented starting point. On 12 October 1958, a male puppy was born to two smooth-haired dogs, one of which had slightly longer hair. The puppy developed long fringes on his ears and legs. Breeders retained the trait under the guidance of the Moscow breeder Yevgueniya Fominichna Zharova, and the variety became known as the Moscow Longhaired Toy Terrier.

The FCI accepted the breed provisionally in 2006 and definitively in 2017. Sweden recognised it in 2006; that same year, its name was changed to Russkiy Toy and it was placed in group 9 for companion and toy dogs. Today, smooth-haired and longhaired dogs are two varieties of the same recognised breed.

Stories about aristocratic ladies, rat catching and “living doorbells” appear in older breed writing, but the Swedish breed strategy describes the early history as difficult to establish and largely based on hearsay. Those accounts should therefore not be presented as certain history.

## Living with the Breed

A Russkiy Toy can live well in either a flat or a house. The size of the property matters less than regular opportunities to go outside, activity, rest and training. In a block of flats, particular attention is needed around noises, doorways and barking. A tiny body does not mean that walks can be replaced by carrying the dog or providing an indoor toilet.

With children, the key question is not whether the breed is “good with children”, but whether the adults can protect both dog and child. Young children should always have an adult present. They should not carry or chase the dog, or disturb it while it is eating or resting. Provide a safe place where the child does not follow. Even an accidental fall can injure a dog weighing no more than 3 kg.

The same care is needed with larger dogs. Choose calm playmates, interrupt physically rough play and do not treat the size difference as an experiment. Living with a cat or another dog can work, but it depends on the individuals and the introduction. Begin at a distance with short, controlled meetings. A cat should have separate resources and a safe escape route.

Alone time should be taught gradually once the dog feels secure at home. Start with very short distances and absences, and increase them only when the dog can rest. A camera can help reveal pacing, vocalising or attempts to follow. The Swedish Board of Agriculture's guidance that dogs should be taken out at least every six hours during the day is not a statement of how long an individual dog is comfortable alone; puppies, older dogs and anxious individuals need more frequent supervision and outings.

Before buying, check:

- that the names and registration numbers match on the parents' records and certificates,
- the official patella result and examination date for both parents,
- current eye results and the meaning of any findings,
- how the puppy's and adult relatives' teeth, movement and temperament have been followed up,
- how the breeder introduces puppies to handling, everyday sounds, different surfaces and very brief periods of separation.

The right home sees the Russkiy Toy as a real dog in miniature: active, quick to learn and social, but also physically vulnerable in situations that a larger dog might cope with easily.

The Dachshund is a German hunting dog in FCI Group 4, developed to work both below and above ground. The breed comes in nine varieties: standard, miniature and rabbit, each combined with a smooth-haired, long-haired or wire-haired coat. It is therefore wiser to choose a Dachshund by size, coat, the breeder's aims and the dogs' actual characteristics than by the breed name alone.

- **Uses:** hunting below ground, hunting by scent, tracking wounded game and companionship.
- **Working style:** persistent, independent and strongly scent-oriented.
- **Size:** determined by chest circumference, not height at the withers or a general weight figure.
- **Coat:** smooth, long or wire, with distinctly different care requirements.
- **Important health issue:** intervertebral disc degeneration and herniation, often grouped under the term IVDD.
- **Best suited to:** someone who wants a low-set hunting dog with a strong desire to work and can provide daily exercise, scent work and consistent training.

The final size variety is not confirmed until the dog is at least 15 months old. The parents provide a reasonable indication, but the puppy's final variety cannot be promised before measurement.

## Appearance & Coat

The Dachshund should be low and long-bodied, yet compact, muscular and agile. Its body was built to work freely in confined spaces, not to be extremely long or heavy. The breed standard specifies ground clearance of about one-third of the height at the withers and a ratio of height to body length of approximately 1:1.7–1.8.

Chest circumference is measured after 15 months of age, from the highest point of the withers to the lowest point of the ribcage. The current ranges are:

- **Standard Dachshund:** males more than 37 cm but no more than 47 cm; females more than 35 cm but no more than 45 cm.
- **Miniature Dachshund:** males more than 32 cm but no more than 37 cm; females more than 30 cm but no more than 35 cm.
- **Rabbit Dachshund:** males 27–32 cm; females 25–30 cm.

The three coat types are more than a difference in appearance. The smooth-haired Dachshund has a short, dense, close-lying coat that normally needs limited routine care but should still be checked after time in rough country. The long-haired Dachshund has an undercoat and longer feathering that should be combed where tangles form easily, particularly behind the ears and on the legs, belly and tail. The wire-haired Dachshund has a topcoat, undercoat, beard and pronounced eyebrows. A correct wire coat is hand-stripped when needed; clipping it does not produce the same coat texture.

Accepted colours and patterns depend partly on coat type. Red, black or brown with tan markings, merle (dapple) and brindle are included in the standard, while wild-boar colours are typical of wire coats. Coat colour is not a shortcut to temperament or hunting drive, but some colour combinations matter for health. Ask the breeder to explain both the registered colour and its inheritance if the puppy is merle.

## Temperament & Personality

The ideal Dachshund is friendly and even-tempered, without fear or aggression, but is also energetic, persistent and self-assured. Its independence comes from work in which the dog must make decisions at a distance from its handler. In daily life, the same trait may appear as a Dachshund checking whether a rule really applies every time.

Hunting drive, sociability, vocality, interest in play and ability to settle vary between individuals and family lines. The Swedish analysis of the Behaviour and Personality Assessment for Dogs, BPH, describes many confident Dachshunds but covers less than one per cent of the Swedish-born population studied. It cannot therefore promise the personality of an individual puppy. Claims that a particular coat type is always calmer, easier to train or less interested in hunting are also too broad.

Instead, ask how the parents and close relatives behave at home, with visitors, on walks and in unfamiliar settings. For a working Dachshund, trial results and practical use are relevant; for a companion, it is equally important to hear specific examples of how the dogs settle after activity, how vocal they are and how they respond to handling. A responsible breeder should be able to describe both strengths and areas that require work.

## Training & Exercise

A Dachshund needs daily physical activity and meaningful scent work, but one fixed number of minutes will not suit every dog. Age, fitness, surface, size variety, health and the way the dog works all affect the appropriate load. A healthy adult can be an enduring walking and outdoor companion, while a puppy should build strength and coordination gradually and a dog with back symptoms needs a veterinary plan.

Tracking, search games, human scent trails and carefully placed food searches allow the Dachshund to use its greatest asset: its nose. Short, clear sessions with a reward the dog genuinely values often work better than repetitions without a clear purpose. Start recall, stop cues, staying with the handler and disengaging from a scent trail early. Obedience does not remove hunting drive, so a long line and thoughtful choice of environment are important when recall is not reliable. In Sweden, dogs must not chase or pursue wildlife outside hunting, and particular supervision is required where wildlife may be present from 1 March to 20 August.

Protecting the back does not mean that a healthy Dachshund should live a sedentary life. There is no evidence that a total ban on all stairs or jumping on and off furniture prevents IVDD by itself. Instead, develop good basic fitness, keep the dog at a healthy body condition, reduce slipping hazards at home and avoid uncontrolled high jumps or collisions. Tailor help on stairs and when lifting to the dog's age, size and health.

## Health

Intervertebral disc degeneration and herniation are the Dachshund's most important breed-specific health issue. IVDD means that the discs between the vertebrae change and may press on nerves or the spinal cord. Seek veterinary care promptly if a Dachshund suddenly develops obvious back or neck pain, arches its back, refuses to move, walks unsteadily, loses strength in its legs or has difficulty controlling urination or defecation. Do not wait for mild neurological signs to resolve on their own.

The Swedish Kennel Club's official spinal X-ray screening for Dachshunds counts calcified discs. It is performed from the dog's second birthday until the day before its fourth birthday, and the result is reported as K0, K1–K2, K3–K4 or K5–K26. K0 means that no calcifications were detected, while a higher K number means more fully or partly calcified discs. The result provides breeding and risk information; it does not guarantee that a dog will never develop, or will definitely develop, clinical problems. Information about disc herniation in parents, siblings and previous offspring is therefore also important.

Spinal screening and eye examinations are voluntary for Dachshunds in Sweden. The Swedish Dachshund Club's breed-specific breeding strategy nevertheless recommends considering back and family history and having breeding dogs' eyes examined before first breeding and later in life. PRA occurs in the breed. The current registration provisions for Dachshunds regulate matters including variety, coat, colour and final size measurement, but do not list back or eye examinations as compulsory conditions for registration. A buyer should therefore ask for the actual results rather than accepting the phrase “health-tested parents”.

Monitor body condition too: a waist should be visible and the ribs should be easy to feel with light pressure. When merle is part of a mating, the breeder should be able to explain the colour genes. Inheriting merle from both parents can result in double merle, which in dogs is associated with an increased risk of hearing and eye problems.

## History & Origins

The Dachshund was developed in Germany from low-legged hunting dogs for work below ground. Such dogs have been known since the Middle Ages, while organised breeding took clearer shape during the nineteenth century. The German Dachshund club was founded in 1888, and breeding came to encompass the three sizes and three coats that make up today's nine varieties.

The breed's low outline, powerful forequarters, stamina and independence have a practical explanation. The Dachshund needed to follow quarry below ground, but could also work as a scent hound or flushing dog and assist in tracking wounded game. In Sweden, it became particularly important as a slow-working scent hound when the roe deer population increased during the 1940s. The Swedish Dachshund Club was founded as early as 1901.

That historical role is still apparent in daily life. A Dachshund that will never hunt still needs outlets for scent work, problem-solving and movement. This is also why a buyer should ask what the breeder genuinely prioritises: work below ground, scent hunting, tracking wounded game, showing or primarily companionship.

## Living with the Breed

A Dachshund can live well in a flat if it receives enough time outdoors, activity and training around sounds in the stairwell and outside the door. The size of the home matters less than the content of the dog's day. Plan several opportunities to go out, time to sniff at an unhurried pace and a place where the dog can rest undisturbed. Time alone should be taught gradually; stop and make the exercise easier if the dog shows distress. The Swedish Board of Agriculture's advice to take an adult dog out at least every six hours during the day concerns toileting and exercise, not how long an individual Dachshund should be left alone.

A Dachshund can be a good family dog with children, but young children and dogs should always have an adult present. Children need to learn not to disturb the dog while it is eating or resting. Young children should not carry a Dachshund; a small dog is easily dropped, and the back and hindquarters need proper support when it is lifted. The dog should always have a safe, undisturbed resting place.

Living with other dogs or cats depends on the individual, previous experience and hunting drive. Make introductions calmly, use a barrier and give both animals separate safe areas. A Dachshund with a strong drive to chase may not become reliable with a rabbit, guinea pig or cat simply because introductions are practised. Secure physical separation may be the right long-term solution.

Before buying, ask for specific answers to the following questions:

- Which size and coat is the puppy expected to have, and how confidently can this be predicted?
- What are the parents used for, and how do they and their close relatives behave in daily life?
- Is there an official K result and information about clinical back problems in parents, siblings or previous offspring?
- When were the parents' eyes last examined, and what do the results show?
- Which BPH, hunting or show results are registered and relevant to this particular litter?
- How have the puppies been introduced to handling, household sounds, people and short periods away from their littermates?

The best match is not automatically the smallest puppy, the quietest one during a visit or the colour that first catches your eye. Choose the combination in which the breeder's aims, the dogs' documented health and temperament, and your own daily life all point in the same direction.

The breed is not an obvious choice for anyone seeking a dog with low care needs. A French Bulldog should be able to move freely and breathe freely even while moving. Audible or laboured breathing is not a charming or normal breed trait.

## Appearance & Coat

The French Bulldog should be compact and muscular without becoming heavy, immobile or exaggerated. The body is slightly longer than the height at the withers, the head is broad and the upright “bat ears” are a defining feature. The whole dog should function in motion: open nostrils, adequate muzzle length, free movement and a body that does not prevent activity matter more than an extreme appearance.

The breed standard specifies different measurements for each sex. Males should stand 27–35 cm and weigh 9–14 kg, while females should stand 24–32 cm and weigh 8–13 kg. These figures are not a target weight for every individual. A suitable body condition depends on the dog’s build, muscle mass and body fat; excess weight puts additional strain on breathing, joints and the back.

The coat is short, smooth, soft and glossy, with no undercoat. Shedding can normally be managed with simple brushing as needed. At the same time, check the nails, paws, ears, teeth and skin. Facial folds should be kept clean and dry, but care should follow the skin’s actual condition. Redness, odour, discharge, itching or soreness call for advice, not simply more frequent cleaning.

The breed standard’s colours are fawn, brindle and pied. Blue and merle are not accepted colours. A puppy marketed as a “rare colour” should be assessed using the same important evidence as any other puppy: registration, respiratory function, the parent dogs and the breeder’s breeding programme.

## Temperament & Personality

According to the breed standard, the French Bulldog should be sociable, lively, playful and affectionate. Many individuals enjoy contact and like to take part in family life. The breed can learn quickly, but independence and stubbornness mean that clear routines and worthwhile rewards often work better than repetition or harsh corrections.

The breed standard describes an ideal, not every dog. Inheritance, early experience, health, pain, environment and training all affect an individual’s behaviour. A dog that struggles to breathe or is uncomfortable because of its skin, back or joints may also have less patience and recover less well. Temperament should therefore be considered alongside physical function.

BPH shows how a particular dog responded during a standardised behavioural assessment. It is not a pass-or-fail test and cannot guarantee a puppy’s future personality. The older Swedish BPH analysis covered only a small proportion of French Bulldogs born in Sweden. For a puppy buyer, it is therefore more useful to meet the dam and ask how the parents and close relatives cope with unfamiliar people, dog encounters, unexpected noises, handling, activity and rest.

The breed can suit a well-informed first-time owner who is prepared for reward-based training, daily activity and possible veterinary needs. It is less suitable when the choice is based mainly on small size, a particular look or the assumption that a short-muzzled dog automatically needs very little exercise.

## Training & Exercise

A French Bulldog needs daily walks, scent work, play and everyday training, but no single number of exercise minutes suits every dog. Age, fitness, weather and, above all, the dog’s breathing and recovery determine what is appropriate. Cooling through panting is less efficient in short-muzzled dogs, so the same activity may be easy on a cool day and unsuitable in hot weather.

Plan several manageable activities rather than one long session that has to be completed. Let the dog sniff, walk calmly over varied ground and use its brain through searches and simple problem-solving. Build fitness gradually and watch the dog throughout the activity. Slow down or stop if breathing becomes clearly noisy or laboured, the nostrils narrow, the dog uses its abdomen forcefully to breathe, falls behind or does not recover normally. Severe breathing difficulty, bluish mucous membranes, unsteadiness, collapse or loss of consciousness requires immediate veterinary attention.

In hot weather, walks need to be moved to cooler times, the pace reduced and the dog given shade, water and a cool place to rest. Never leave the dog in a hot car or another enclosed space. A dog that repeatedly struggles during moderate activity or warm weather needs a veterinary assessment; merely avoiding all exercise is not a solution.

Prioritise attention, calm lead walking, recall, ending play, settling and accepting checks of the mouth, ears, facial folds, paws and nails. Teach the dog to be alone in very small steps once it already feels secure at home. Reward-based methods make each task clear and make necessary handling easier.

## Health

The most important health problem to understand in the French Bulldog is BOAS, brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. It occurs when there is insufficient space for the soft tissues within the shortened nose and throat. The consequences can include noisy or laboured breathing, poor stamina, disturbed sleep and difficulty regulating body temperature.

RFG-Scheme is a veterinary assessment that evaluates respiratory function before and after three minutes of brisk exercise and grades the result from 0 to 3. Since 1 January 2025, French Bulldogs have been covered by a Level 2 health programme within SKK: dogs used for breeding must have a result before mating. An official result can be registered from 24 months of age and must be no more than two years old at the time of mating. Grade 0 is recommended; dogs graded 2 or 3 must not be used for breeding under SKK rules. A dog that has undergone airway surgery cannot be assessed within the scheme.

An RFG result describes the dog’s condition at the time of the assessment and does not remove the need for your own observations. It is not a lifetime guarantee and does not cover every other health risk. Before buying a puppy, ask for the parents’ registered names, assessment dates and actual RFG grades. Ideally, see the parents both at rest and after normal movement: breathing should be free, recovery reasonable and the nostrils open. Do not accept “tested” or “vet checked” as a substitute for the registered result.

Other documented areas of risk include allergies and skin disease, problems affecting the back, skeleton and joints including patellar luxation, and injuries to the prominent eyes. This does not mean that every dog will be affected. Ask about recurring skin problems, lameness, back pain and eye injuries in the parents and close relatives. The Swedish breed club also recommends that puppy buyers ask about patellas, the heart and breathing in the adult dogs; these questions should be distinguished from the formal RFG requirement.

Contact a vet about recurring breathing noises, clear exercise or heat intolerance, sleep disturbed by breathing, smelly or painful skin, recurring lameness, back pain, or a red, watery or painful eye. Early assessment is better than waiting for a problem to become “typical of the breed”.

## History & Origins

The French Bulldog was established as a breed in Paris in the late nineteenth century. The first breed club was founded in Paris in 1880, the first dog was registered in 1885 and the first breed standard was adopted in 1898. The French kennel club recognised the breed in the same year.

The breed developed as a companion dog and acquired the compact body, broad head and upright bat ears that still characterise the standard. The French Bulldog was first shown in Sweden in 1913. Its historical type explains the modern appearance, but breeding today should not intensify these features to the point that breathing, eyes, back, tail or movement are adversely affected.

## Living with the Breed

A French Bulldog can live in a flat or a house because the size of the home alone does not determine whether daily life will work. What matters is that the dog receives daily activity, can rest undisturbed and has a secure, cool environment. In a flat, sounds from stairwells and outside windows should be addressed through early training, and access to a lift or the number of stairs may become important if the dog is in pain or has difficulty breathing.

The same safety rule applies with children as with any dog: an adult is responsible for their interaction. Children should not disturb the dog while it eats or rests, climb on it or persist when it tries to move away. Provide a protected resting place and teach both children and dog to interact calmly. Small size and a playful temperament do not automatically make an individual safe with children.

Living with other dogs or cats depends on the individuals and their previous experiences. Make introductions gradually, with a way to separate the animals and without forcing close contact. Socialisation may improve the prospects but cannot guarantee that every combination will work. Pay particular attention to stress, resource guarding and whether another dog’s play becomes too physical for an individual with limited breathing capacity.

Time alone needs to be taught gradually, beginning with very short periods. Increase the duration only when the dog can remain calm, and consider using a camera to detect distress or barking that is not apparent when you return. The breed should not be chosen with a plan to leave the dog alone for most of the day on a regular basis.

Before buying, everyone in the household should be able to answer yes to these questions:

- Can we put unrestricted breathing and sound physical function ahead of an extreme appearance or an unusual colour?
- Can we verify the parents’ identities, RFG grades and assessment dates rather than relying on verbal assurances?
- Can we adapt activity to heat and the dog’s condition without making it inactive?
- Do we have the time and financial capacity to manage the veterinary needs that may accompany the breed’s body shape?

If the answers are yes and the breeder can show verifiable results, the French Bulldog can be a lively and close companion. The most important choice is not the most extreme head or rarest colour, but a dog that can breathe, move, recover and enjoy an active everyday life.

## Appearance & Coat

The Bull Terrier should be powerfully built, muscular, well balanced and agile. The eyes are small and triangular, while the ears are small, thin and upright.

There is no official ‘normal weight’ or height at the withers for a Bull Terrier. Figures that give a precise range should therefore not be read as part of the breed standard. More practical questions matter to a prospective owner: Can you hold the dog safely on a lead? Is its body balanced and mobile? Is it in healthy condition, without mistaking strength and muscle for excess weight?

The coat should be short, even, hard to the touch and close to the body. A soft undercoat may develop in winter. White dogs should be white, although skin pigmentation and markings on the head are allowed. In coloured dogs, colour should predominate over white. Brindle, black brindle, red, fawn and tricolour are accepted by the standard.

Coat care does not take much time, but the skin deserves attention. Brush as needed to remove loose hair and inspect the skin and coat at the same time. Redness, recurring itching, bare patches or a coat that becomes thin and dull should not be dismissed as a cosmetic issue. Check the mouth as well. It is impossible to declare that all Bull Terriers are good with children, aggressive towards other dogs, protective or suitable for first-time owners. Meet the individual dog and, if possible, its parents. Ask how they respond to handling, unfamiliar settings, encounters with other dogs and settling down to rest.

The Bull Terrier's strength and impulsive manner are often most noticeable during adolescence. Even a friendly dog may jump up, use its body in play or pull when something catches its attention. An adult should therefore always be present when the dog is with young children. More is not always better: if the dog becomes increasingly overexcited, loses physical control or struggles to settle afterwards, the routine needs adjusting rather than simply increasing the pace.

Training should be positive, reward-based and tailored to the individual. Increase the difficulty gradually and use rewards that genuinely matter to the dog. The dog's focus and motivation should determine the length of a session, not a fixed number of minutes. Once an exercise works in the kitchen, practise it again in quiet outdoor places before expecting the same response around dogs and other distractions.

- walking on a loose lead and checking in before the dog has a chance to pull away;

The main documented health concerns for Bull Terriers in Sweden are immune-related conditions, particularly skin disease, along with heart and kidney disease. Nordic health guidance for dog shows also identifies the mouth and bite, irritated skin or a thin coat, and excessively small eye openings as areas requiring attention.

It is important to distinguish requirements from recommendations. The Swedish Kennel Club's current registration rules contain no Bull Terrier-specific health testing requirement. The breed club's unofficial health programme is separate guidance for breeders and focuses on the heart, kidneys and skin. That does not make these checks unimportant; the distinction helps a puppy buyer ask the right questions rather than accepting a vague assurance that ‘everything compulsory has been done’.

Ask the breeder to show documentation of the parents' heart and kidney checks and to explain how their skin health was assessed. Also ask about problems among close relatives. BAER hearing testing, patellar examination and eye examination fall outside the club's main programme but may be justified for particular dogs and families. Ask why an additional test was or was not carried out instead of treating the same checklist as compulsory for every mating.

When meeting a puppy or adult dog, check that the skin looks calm, the coat has no bare or irritated areas and the eyes open normally. Ask how the mouth and canine teeth have been assessed; a bite that damages the roof of the mouth is a health issue, not merely a show-ring detail. Hearing is also worth asking about, particularly in bloodlines with extensive white colouring, but older Swedish survey findings cannot predict the health of a new puppy.

Seek veterinary advice for persistent itching or skin changes, altered thirst or urination, fainting, a marked loss of stamina or pain in the mouth. Such signs can have many causes and should not be diagnosed at home on the basis of breed alone.

## History & Origins

The modern Bull Terrier was developed in Britain during the nineteenth century and shown by James Hinks in Birmingham in 1862. The Swedish breed club's breeding strategy names the Bulldog, Dalmatian and now-extinct English White Terrier as important elements in the development of the new type. The Kennel Club in Britain recognised the white Bull Terrier in 1887.

The breed's older bull-and-terrier background is often linked directly to animal fighting, but the history requires nuance. Fighting between dogs and other animals had been banned in Britain in 1835, 27 years before Hinks showed his Bull Terrier. The Swedish breeding strategy therefore considers it unlikely that Hinks created the modern breed for bull-baiting or dog fighting. His aim was instead a strong, agile and elegant companion and show dog, with great emphasis on the white coat.

This does not mean that the breed's physical power is irrelevant today. It means that a prospective owner will gain a more accurate picture by assessing the modern dog's temperament, breeding and everyday behaviour than by using the label ‘fighting dog’ as a complete explanation.

## Living with the Breed

A Bull Terrier can live in a flat if it receives appropriate care, activity and rest. A garden does not replace walks, training or company. What matters is whether the owner can provide a secure routine for a strong and sometimes intense dog.

Time alone must be taught gradually. Begin with very brief, uneventful absences once the dog has settled into its new home, and increase them only while it remains calm. Dogs learn at different rates, so neither breed nor age guarantees a particular number of hours. If the dog shows distress, barks persistently or becomes destructive when left, take the training back a step and investigate the cause.

Living with a cat or another dog depends on the individuals and on the introduction. Keep the animals separate at first, give the cat secure places the dog cannot reach and keep the dog on a lead behind a gate for the first meetings. Reward calm behaviour and prevent chasing from the first day. Allow more freedom only once both animals are relaxed; some combinations will never be safe without continued separation.

Swedish law places a general duty of supervision on dog owners: a dog must be kept and cared for in a way that prevents injury or substantial nuisance. For a Bull Terrier, that means a secure lead, carefully managed encounters with other dogs and a handler who can intervene before the dog's strength becomes a problem.

The breed is a reasonable choice if you want a close relationship, enjoy a playful and headstrong dog and have time for everyday training throughout its life. Choose another breed if you want a dog that needs little training, must be left alone for much of the day or is expected to get along automatically with every child and animal. The Continental Bulldog should look like an athletic bulldog, not an extremely short-muzzled or heavy dog. Its body is compact and muscular, but it should move with an even, fluid gait. The ratio of height at the withers to body length is about 1:1.2, so the dog is slightly longer than it is tall. The official height ranges are 42–50 cm for males and 40–48 cm for females.

The head is powerful without excessive skin or wrinkles. The nose must be completely black, with large, wide-open nostrils. The muzzle should normally be about one third of the total head length, with one quarter accepted as the lower limit. This is an important functional detail: breed type must not come at the expense of open airways. The eyes should be neither sunken nor protruding, and the eyelids should fit closely without visible irritation.

The current FCI standard from 2026 permits fawn in shades from sand to red, brindle and black. These colours may occur with varying amounts of white or a dark mask, while white may be the base colour with markings in the permitted colours. Older information stating that every colour with a black nose is accepted is therefore no longer current.

The coat is short, close-fitting and easy to inspect. Brush and bathe the dog when it genuinely needs it rather than following a fixed weekly timetable. At the same time, check the skin, paws, ears and any facial folds. Persistent redness, dampness, itching or recurring irritation should be assessed by a vet, not merely concealed by more frequent cleaning.

## Temperament & Personality

A typical Continental Bulldog should be attentive, self-confident and friendly. This describes the breed ideal, not a promise about every puppy. Genetics, early experiences, environment, training and health all influence how an adult dog responds to people, dogs and unfamiliar situations.

The breed was developed to live closely with people and may enjoy joining in family activities. Its powerful build and playfulness, however, make calm everyday training just as important as social contact. Teach the puppy early to greet people with all four paws on the ground, wait at doors, give up objects and settle when nothing is happening. These skills help both in a home with children and when visitors arrive.

A Continental Bulldog can be a first dog for a well-informed owner who wants to train consistently and with rewards. It is a poorer choice for someone looking for a dog that is content with brief walks, can be left alone without training or will handle every social situation automatically. An adult weighing 20–30 kg also requires everyone in the household to be able to manage lead walking, encounters with other dogs and exciting situations safely.

Observe the parent dogs in everyday situations if possible. Ask how they respond to strangers, handling, encounters with other dogs and recovery after activity. A general description such as “lovely family dog” is less useful than concrete examples and a recorded behaviour assessment.

There is no reliable rule in minutes that suits every adult, and a puppy’s exercise should not be governed by the simplistic five-minute rule. Age, build, surface, intensity, temperature, breathing and recovery provide better guidance than a universal timer.

Combine walks with calm scent work, engagement exercises, body awareness and short training sessions. Reward the behaviour you want and increase difficulty gradually. The breed can be both strong and enthusiastic, so lead manners, recall, impulse control and the ability to settle are practical foundation skills. Harsh corrections or training based on fear are unnecessary and may undermine both confidence and co-operation.

A growing puppy benefits from self-directed play, exploratory walks and several short everyday experiences. Avoid repeatedly asking for hard jumps, sudden stops or other loads for which the puppy is not prepared, but do not treat normal movement as dangerous. Increase activity gradually and make sure the puppy can rest undisturbed.

According to the breed standard, breathing should remain quiet even when the dog moves at speed. Stop and let the dog cool down if breathing becomes laboured, recovery takes too long or the dog loses pace and willingness. Take particular care in hot weather. Repeated breathing noise, abdominal effort, open-mouth breathing after little exertion, overheating or fainting are warning signs that require veterinary assessment.

## Health

The Swedish population is still too small for disease prevalence to be assessed reliably. It is therefore misleading both to call the breed problem-free and to present a long list of diagnoses as though every condition were common. Breathing and eyelids are the most clearly documented risk areas, while joints, DNA results and behaviour form part of the Swedish breed club’s breeding recommendations.

The Continental Bulldog is brachycephalic and is included in the Swedish Kennel Club’s instructions for reducing conformational exaggerations. These identify laboured or noisy breathing together with an excessively short muzzle, pinched nostrils and narrow airways. Incorrectly formed eyelids are the other named risk area. In the breed standard, breathing noise at rest or in motion, as well as inward- or outward-rolling eyelids, are disqualifying faults.

Since May 2026, Continental Bulldogs have been eligible for RFG-S assessment in Sweden. The vet assesses features including the nostrils and breathing before and after exercise, and results for dogs registered with the Swedish Kennel Club can be viewed in its public records. Ask for the parents’ results and also observe how the dogs actually breathe and recover. A test result is valuable information, but it does not replace observation over time.

It is also important to distinguish requirements from recommendations. The Swedish Kennel Club’s 2026 registration rules contain no breed-specific HD or ED status requirement for the Continental Bulldog, and the group’s explicit RFG-S requirement applies to the English Bulldog. The Swedish breed strategy nevertheless recommends known HD and ED status, DNA results for cystinuria and DVL2, and a completed BPH behaviour assessment. These are relevant records to request, but they should not be described as compulsory Swedish Kennel Club tests for the breed.

Ask the breeder to show the original results and explain how they informed the choice of mating. Also ask about breathing, eyes, skin, urinary problems and movement in parents, siblings and previous offspring. For cystinuria and DVL2, find out exactly which variant was tested and how the result affected the mating; the labels “DNA tested” or “health tested” are not enough on their own.

## History & Origins

The Continental Bulldog is a young Swiss breed with a clearly documented beginning. In 2000, the Swiss kennel organisation authorised breeder Imelda Angehrn to cross the English Bulldog with the Old English Bulldog. The first litter of the so-called Pickwick crosses was born in the summer of 2001.

The breeding programme aimed to produce a medium-sized bulldog with better mobility, quiet breathing, and natural mating and whelping. These were breeding goals, not guarantees for every dog born. When the project developed into a separate breed, the Swiss kennel club authorised continued breeding under the name Continental Bulldog on 15 September 2004. The Swiss breed club was founded that same year.

The FCI accepted the breed on a provisional basis on 30 March 2022. Provisional status means that the breed is listed internationally by the FCI but is not yet definitively recognised. The current official standard is dated February 2026 and was published in March of that year. This timeline is more accurate than simply saying that the breed gained full FCI recognition in 2022.

## Living with the Breed

The Continental Bulldog can thrive in many types of home if daily life includes activity, recovery, training and careful health monitoring. The size of the home matters less than how the dog copes with noise, stairs, visitors, dog encounters and time alone. Flat living can work, but recurring barking or distress needs training and management; the breed name does not promise a quiet dog.

Children and dogs should always have an adult present, and the dog needs a resting place where it will not be disturbed. Its physical strength means that even friendly play can overwhelm a small child. Teach both child and dog clear boundaries and interrupt play before it becomes too intense.

The same caution applies to other animals. Some individuals live happily with dogs or cats, while others need more distance and carefully managed introductions. Base decisions on the individual dog’s experience and behaviour, keep the first meetings calm and separate the animals when nobody can supervise them. Socialisation improves the prospects but does not guarantee a particular outcome.

Time alone should be taught through very brief, calm separations and increased only when the dog is comfortable. A puppy cannot be expected to stay alone like a trained adult, and adults also vary considerably. Arrange help if everyday life requires longer absences than the dog can manage without distress.

Before buying, you should be able to answer yes to three questions: Can you provide varied activity without ignoring breathing and heat? Can you handle a powerful adult dog with calm, reward-based training? Can the breeder show documented results for the parents’ breathing, eyes, joints, DNA and behaviour? If any part is missing, it is sensible to wait for a better-documented mating.

- It should be energetic, alert, curious and quick to learn, although activity levels can vary considerably between individuals.

The American Hairless Terrier is best suited to someone who wants an active companion and can combine everyday training with protection for bare skin. Having no coat does not make the dog allergy-free or remove the terrier instinct to hunt.

## Appearance & Coat

The American Hairless Terrier should be agile, muscular and slightly longer than it is tall, with proportions of about 10:9. It should have medium bone and move freely and evenly while keeping a strong, level back. This is an athletic terrier, not a fragile toy dog.

The ideal height is 30.5–40.5 cm for both sexes. The standard gives no weight range, so proportions, muscle and body condition are more informative than an unofficial figure. Ask the breeder to show you how the parents look and move as adults.

Both the hairless and coated varieties are recognised. A hairless puppy is born with a soft natal coat that gradually disappears. By about eight to ten weeks, the body should be hairless apart from whiskers and possibly very fine down. The coated variety retains a short, smooth, dense and glossy coat. All colours and colour combinations are allowed except merle and albinism.

Hairlessness is inherited recessively and is associated with a variant in the SGK3 gene. A coated dog can therefore carry the variant without being hairless. This genetic form is not associated with the same effects on teeth and fertility as the dominant hairlessness seen in some other hairless breeds. That does not mean every dog must have a complete set of teeth: the standard accepts a scissor or level bite and does not penalise missing premolars.

Skin care should respond to the dog's skin and the weather rather than follow a fixed routine. A hairless dog may need a well-fitting coat in cold conditions and protection from strong sunlight. Check the skin for chafing, scratches or redness after play and walks. Dry skin may sometimes need an emollient, but recurring rashes, itching or inflamed areas should be assessed by a vet. The coated variety mainly needs routine brushing, nail care and checks of the ears and teeth.

## Temperament & Personality

The American Hairless Terrier should be energetic, alert, curious and quick to learn. A confident individual will usually want to take part in family life and enjoy both company and purposeful activities. It also has a clear terrier heritage: it may react quickly to movement, keep watch on events outside the home and make its own decisions when something interesting appears.

Positive early experiences of people, dogs, surfaces, sounds and different settings matter. Socialisation does not mean that the dog must greet everyone. The aim is for it to handle everyday life calmly and look to its handler for guidance. Too few dogs in Sweden have completed BPH behavioural assessments for the results to describe the whole breed, so observe how the actual parents behave instead.

Activity levels vary. The Swedish breed club describes dogs ranging from fairly moderate to intense individuals that need a great deal of exercise and occupation. Ask how the parents and previous offspring behave on ordinary days: can they settle after activity, how do they respond to visitors and sounds, and how strongly do they pursue small animals?

Prey drive is a central everyday consideration. The breed's ancestors hunted rats and other vermin, and an American Hairless Terrier may regard mice, hamsters, guinea pigs and other small pets as prey. Do not assume that living together will be safe simply because the dog grows up in the household. Keep the animals securely apart whenever an adult cannot supervise them.

## Training & Exercise

The American Hairless Terrier needs daily movement, mental activity and practice in settling. A fixed number of minutes will not suit every dog. A better measure is whether the individual can move in a relaxed way, use its nose, solve tasks and then rest at home without becoming restless or overtired.

Combine walks with scent work, brief training sessions, play and body-awareness exercises. The breed may enjoy activities such as nose work, rally obedience, agility and trick training when the demands suit the dog's age and physical condition. Adapt activities to bare skin too: dense vegetation can scratch, while cold or strong sunlight may call for shorter sessions, a different time of day or protective clothing.

Use clear cues, short repetitions and rewards the dog genuinely values. Its curiosity and ability to learn mean that many individuals spot patterns quickly, including unwanted ones. Reward calm behaviour at the door, voluntary attention outdoors and the ability to disengage from something the dog wants to chase. Harsh corrections risk creating conflict or uncertainty and do not teach the dog what to do instead.

Recall and stopping around small animals deserve high priority, but training does not remove prey drive. Use a lead or long line where wildlife may appear until the response is thoroughly proven in that setting. If the dog barks at noises or visitors, work both preventively and practically: block opportunities to stand guard at windows, teach it to settle in a chosen place and reward it for breaking off the alert.

## Health

There are too few registered dogs in Sweden to describe the breed's health with great certainty. It is therefore misleading either to call the American Hairless Terrier generally healthy or to present a long list of diagnoses as if each were common. A prospective owner gets better evidence by reviewing the parents' results, illness among close relatives and the breeder's follow-up of previous litters.

The Swedish breed strategy recommends that both parents' DNA status for prcd-PRA and primary lens luxation, PLL, should be known before mating. A PLL carrier should have an eye examination close to the mating. Dogs that show signs of patellar luxation or have had corrective surgery should not be bred from, and the breeder should make sure that every puppy can hear before it leaves. Persistent allergy, skin problems and autoimmune disease in offspring should also inform future breeding decisions.

These are breed-club recommendations, not a compulsory health programme. Under the Swedish Kennel Club's 2026 registration rules, the only special provision for the American Hairless Terrier is that coat type is recorded; there is no breed-specific requirement there for prcd-PRA, PLL, patella or hearing tests. Rules can change, so anyone planning a litter should always check the current version.

As a puppy buyer, ask to see the DNA results and confirm which dog they belong to. A result for one genetic variant is not a general certificate of health. Also ask how the patellae have been assessed, how puppy hearing is checked, and whether close relatives have had skin, allergy, eye or immune-related problems. Because the breed was founded from a small number of dogs, the relationship between the parents and open follow-up also matter.

A hairless dog is not allergy-free. Dog allergens are found mainly in skin and saliva, and the amount varies between individuals, even within a breed or litter. Anyone with a dog allergy should not choose a breed on coat alone. Discuss the risk with a healthcare professional and spend time with the particular dog on several occasions before deciding; a brief meeting with another member of the breed offers no guarantee.

## History & Origins

The American Hairless Terrier developed from the American Rat Terrier, a farm and hunting dog used to control rats and other small quarry. In the autumn of 1972, a hairless bitch was born in a Rat Terrier litter. The Scott family named her Josephine, and she became the foundation bitch of the breed. In 1981, she produced a litter of two hairless and two coated puppies, providing the basis for further development.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the population was built from few dogs, with matings between close relatives used to establish the hairless trait. This explains why genetic diversity remains an important part of breeding decisions. The coated variety is not an unwanted by-product but a recognised part of the breed and can contribute to a broader breeding base.

The United Kennel Club registered it as a hairless Rat Terrier variety in 1999 and as a separate breed in 2004. The American Kennel Club granted full recognition in 2016. The first documented import to Sweden arrived in 2005 and produced its first litter the following year. Swedish Kennel Club recognition has applied since 2017. The breed can take part in shows and dog sports in the Nordic countries but is still not recognised by the FCI.

## Living with the Breed

An American Hairless Terrier can live in a flat if it receives enough outdoor activity, help to settle and training around noises in stairwells and outside windows. The content of daily life matters more than the size of the home. In a building with poor sound insulation, however, the owner needs to address alert barking early and provide an undisturbed resting place.

With children, adult supervision and respect for the dog's boundaries matter more than a breed label. Children and dogs should not be left alone together, and the dog needs a safe resting place where it will not be disturbed. Bare skin also makes rough play, sharp fingernails and careless lifting particularly unsuitable.

Living with a cat can work for some individuals, but prey drive makes calm, controlled introductions essential. The cat should have its own escape routes and resources, the dog must be prevented from chasing, and meetings should be supervised until their behaviour together is predictable. Small rodents and other prey-like pets must always be kept securely apart.

Being left alone is a learned skill, not an inborn breed trait. Start with very short absences when the dog feels safe and calm, and increase the duration only while it can remain relaxed. Persistent distress, barking or attempts to escape mean that training has progressed too quickly. Arrange care if daily life requires absences longer than the individual can manage.

In a Nordic climate, clothing for a hairless dog must function rather than merely look attractive. Check that coats provide warmth without rubbing beneath the forelegs or across the chest, and adapt time outdoors to wind, rain, temperature and the dog's movement. Strong sunlight calls for shade and may require skin protection. This extra care is central to the choice of breed, alongside the terrier's need for activity, training and safe management around small animals.

The standard describes two coat varieties: smooth and moderately long. Both have a dense, medium-textured outer coat and a soft, dense undercoat that provides weather resistance. The moderately long coat forms more of a mane, breeching and brush, while the smooth coat lies closer to the body. Many colours and markings occur; black and white and tricolour are common, but the standard permits considerable variety provided white does not predominate.

The coat is basically straightforward to maintain. Brush as often as needed to remove loose undercoat and prevent matting, particularly behind the ears and in areas of feathering. More frequent brushing is needed during periods of heavier shedding. Bathe when necessary. A dog that works or trains outdoors should also be checked afterwards: examine the paws, nails, skin and coat for injuries, grass awns, ticks and debris.

## Temperament & Personality

The Border Collie is attentive, cooperative and extremely quick to notice patterns. It therefore learns not only what its owner intends to teach, but also which sounds predict a walk, how people normally move and which behaviours produce a response. Highly trainable does not automatically mean easy to live with; unclear routines and accidental rewards can establish behaviour just as quickly as considered training.

Herding depends on the dog noticing and influencing movement. In everyday life without sheep, the same sensitivity can be directed towards cars, bicycles, runners, children or other animals. Staring, stalking, cutting off a path and chasing are signals to address early. They should be interrupted calmly and replaced with a trained alternative, not encouraged as an amusing quirk.

A Border Collie can live successfully in a family, but the breed is not universally “good with children” regardless of the individual and environment. Running, shouting and fast play can trigger herding behaviour or stress. Children and dogs therefore need adult supervision, and the dog needs an undisturbed resting place. Living with a cat or other dogs can also work, especially with thoughtful introductions, but cannot be guaranteed on the basis of breed alone. The cat should be able to withdraw and the dog should be taught to leave it alone.

## Training & Exercise

A Border Collie needs both physical activity and tasks requiring concentration every day, but it is not possible to specify a number of hours that suits every individual. Age, health, temperament, previous training and work determine the appropriate load. A good routine alternates movement, problem-solving, cooperation and recovery.

Walks in varied surroundings, free movement where it is safe, scent work, obedience, tracking, herding and other dog sports engage the dog in different ways. Choose activities in which the dog must listen and make decisions, not merely run quickly. Endless ball throwing or other highly arousing repetition is a poor measure of whether the dog’s needs have been met; it can increase anticipation without teaching the dog to settle.

Keep training sessions short, clear and reward based. Give everyday skills such as recall, lead walking, stopping at a distance and disengaging from movement as much attention as tricks or competitive exercises. Reward calm behaviour too: lying in a designated place, waiting while something happens and sleeping after activity. A Border Collie that is always offered more high-speed activity can become extremely fit without learning how to rest.

Puppies and young dogs need controlled experiences, not a miniature version of an adult training schedule. Build confidence in different environments, allow the body to mature and increase physical load and difficulty gradually. If the dog becomes more scattered, noise-sensitive or fixated despite receiving more activity, the answer may be a better balance and professional help rather than still harder exercise.

## Health

The Border Collie is regarded as comparatively healthy, but the breed has documented conditions that a puppy buyer should understand. Hip dysplasia (HD), Collie eye anomaly (CEA), other retinal changes, epilepsy and osteochondrosis affecting mainly the shoulder are among the areas highlighted by the Swedish Kennel Club and the Swedish Sheepdog Society.

When assessing a Swedish-registered litter, start by checking the parents’ official hip status and eye examination. Under Swedish Kennel Club rules, the eye result must be recorded before mating and would normally be no more than one year old. Check the registered results and also ask about epilepsy, recurring seizures, shoulder problems and early deaths among siblings, parents and other close relatives. Normal results for two parents do not describe the health of an entire family line.

DNA tests are available for several inherited conditions in the breed, including CEA, IGS, TNS and sensory neuropathy. Which tests are relevant depends on ancestry and current recommendations. Ask the breeder to explain what has been tested and why. For recessive diseases, a healthy carrier is not the same as an affected dog; what matters is planning the mating so puppies cannot inherit the disease variant from both parents. A DNA test does not replace a clinical eye examination, joint results or knowledge of the wider family.

A dog with Border Collie collapse (BCC) may be completely symptom-free at rest but become disorientated, unsteady or fall during or shortly after intense activity. The dog may appear to recover after 5–30 minutes, but any collapse must be taken seriously and assessed by a vet. BCC is not the same as ordinary fatigue, heatstroke or the dynamin-1-related EIC variant more commonly seen in Labrador Retrievers. Stop the activity immediately if the dog’s focus or movement changes abnormally.

The Border Collie developed in the border country between England and Scotland as a working dog for sheep farming. Selection was based for a long time on practical herding ability: the dog needed to read livestock, work at a distance and respond to its handler’s signals in demanding conditions. This functional background explains the breed’s eye, stalking movement, endurance and strong drive to control movement.

The FCI recognises the Border Collie as a British sheepdog subject to a working trial. In Sweden, function also has an unusually explicit place in registration. The breed is entered in the Swedish Kennel Club’s dedicated sheepdog register, REG V, and a Swedish-born Border Collie can only be registered when both parents have passed a herding trial held by Svenska Vallhundsklubben (SVaK) or have an approved equivalent qualification from abroad. Appearance can consequently vary more than in many other breeds, while working ability remains central to the Swedish breeding model.

## Living with the Breed

Living well with a Border Collie requires planning, but not constant entertainment. The goal is a dog that can work with focus when needed and rest when nothing is happening. That balance is best suited to a home where someone genuinely enjoys dog training and where responsibility does not depend on children exercising the dog.

Living in a flat is not automatically ruled out, and a large garden does not guarantee a good life. Access to suitable training environments, safe exercise and a routine that can genuinely be maintained matter more. In a busy area, the owner must be able to manage traffic, bicycles, runners, sounds and encounters without the dog becoming stuck in herding or constant vigilance.

Time alone should be trained gradually, beginning with very short periods and adjusted to the dog’s age and reactions. The Swedish Board of Agriculture’s advice that dogs should be taken out at least every six hours during the day is not a promise that a dog will be comfortable alone for that long. Consider filming early sessions and step back if the dog paces, pants, barks, damages things or cannot settle. A routine involving repeated long working days without help is a poor starting point for this breed.

Before buying a Swedish puppy, check at least three things for both parents: a registered hip status, a valid eye result and a pass in an approved herding trial. Then ask about epilepsy and joint health in close relatives, relevant DNA tests, how the parents behave both at rest and at work, and what support the breeder provides after the purchase. The best match is not about finding the “cleverest” puppy, but choosing one whose temperament and working drive suit what you can offer throughout the dog’s life.

## Appearance & Coat

The Golden Retriever should be well balanced, proportionate and active, with a build capable of work without being heavy or exaggerated. Males are generally larger than females, but function, free movement and overall soundness matter more than a powerful appearance.

The coat consists of straight or wavy outer hair, fuller feathering and a dense, water-resistant undercoat. Permitted colours range from cream to different shades of gold. Red and mahogany are not standard colours, and white is limited to a few hairs on the chest. Colour or body shape does not, however, reliably predict an individual dog's activity level or willingness to work.

The double coat sheds and needs regular attention, especially when more undercoat is being released. Brush through the entire coat as needed and pay particular attention behind the ears, in the armpits and in the feathering on the legs and tail, where tangles form more readily. A comb helps confirm that brushing has reached through the undercoat. Bathe the dog when it is dirty rather than according to a fixed schedule. After swimming or wet walks, it is practical to untangle the coat, let it dry thoroughly and check the skin and ears if the dog shows signs of irritation.

Nail trimming, dental care and checks of the skin, ears and paws are part of routine care. The important point is to adapt the routine to the individual dog's coat, shedding, activity and how often it gets wet or dirty.

## Temperament & Personality

The breed ideal for the Golden Retriever is a friendly, confident and biddable dog with a natural willingness to work and retrieve. Many seek contact, carry objects and enjoy shared tasks, but this description should not be taken to mean that every Golden Retriever is automatically calm, uncomplicated or sociable with everyone.

The breed often matures relatively late. A young Golden Retriever can remain physical, intense and easily distracted long after reaching full size. Everyday skills such as greeting calmly, following guidance, accepting handling and settling therefore need to be trained as deliberately as retrieving and obedience.

Breeders pursue different goals, including work in the shooting field, tests, shows or a broader companion focus. Labels such as “working Golden” and “show Golden” provide only a rough clue and do not reliably predict an individual's drive, appearance or ability to switch off. Instead, ask the breeder to describe the parents' and close relatives' everyday behaviour, willingness to work, fears, sociability and recovery after activity or stress. Working and temperament assessments can provide more information, but they are part of the evidence rather than guarantees.

The breed can suit a committed first-time owner, particularly with support from the breeder and a training class. It still requires readiness for a relatively large, strong and often lively adolescent dog that needs consistent routines, daily engagement and time to mature.

## Training & Exercise

The Golden Retriever needs daily physical activity, mental problem-solving and opportunities to recover, but there is no fixed daily duration that suits every dog. Age, health, fitness, personality and breeding focus determine how exercise should be divided and how demanding it can be.

A balanced adult routine may include walks over varied terrain, scent work, searches, retrieving, obedience and calm training in different environments. Variety offers more than trying to exhaust the dog with the same high-intensity activity every day. The breed was developed for cooperation, so tasks with a clear start, purpose and finish often suit it better than uncontrolled, rapid ball throwing.

Puppies need short, positive periods of play, exposure to different environments and movement, with plenty of rest between activities. The load should be adapted to the puppy's development and the surface underfoot, not calculated from a fixed rule based on minutes. Increase duration and difficulty gradually and let the puppy's stamina and recovery determine the next step.

Reward-based training generally suits the breed's willingness to cooperate. Prioritise these skills early:

- recall and engagement around people, dogs and game scent
- walking on a loose lead and greeting calmly
- releasing and exchanging objects without conflict
- steadiness and waiting before retrieving or play
- a learned cue for rest and settling

An interest in water is common, but not every Golden Retriever wants to enter the water and swimming ability should never be assumed. Introduce water in a shallow, calm area with an easy exit, allow the dog to set the pace and supervise continuously. Currents, weak ice, algal blooms and banks that are difficult to leave require particular caution.

## Health

Hips, elbows and eyes are central health areas in Swedish Golden Retriever breeding. Prospective puppy buyers need to distinguish between the Swedish Kennel Club's formal registration requirements, the breed club's recommendations and the result of an individual test.

For the offspring to be registered with the Swedish Kennel Club, both parents must have an official hip dysplasia status before mating. This does not mean that elbow grading, eye examination and DNA testing are equivalent mandatory Swedish Kennel Club requirements for every litter of the breed. The Swedish Golden Retriever Club's recommendations and puppy referral conditions go further: they include hip and elbow results, a current eye examination, GR_PRA1/2 status and certain merits.

The club normally recommends hip grades A or B and elbows graded clear. Dogs with hip grade C or elbow grade 1 should, under the recommendations, be used only exceptionally, and the litter's estimated hip or elbow index must then be at least 100. The eye certificate must be no more than two years old at mating, and at least one parent must be clear or hereditarily clear of both GR_PRA1 and GR_PRA2.

Ask for the actual results, not merely a statement that the dogs have been “tested”. Check the hip and elbow grades, indexes where available, the date and result of the eye examination, and each parent's DNA status. GR_PRA1 and GR_PRA2 relate to specific mutations. The tests do not cover every genetic cause of PRA and therefore do not replace a clinical eye examination.

Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and some eye diseases occur in the breed. The breed-specific breeding strategy also identifies tumours as an important issue for the breed as a whole. Such evidence cannot be converted into a certain percentage or prognosis for an individual puppy. Also ask about the health and longevity of parents, siblings and older close relatives. Good screening results reduce uncertainty but can never guarantee future health.

## History & Origins

The Golden Retriever was developed during the latter part of the nineteenth century in the border area between England and Scotland to retrieve shot game on both land and water. Changing shooting practices created a need for a dog that could search, mark, wait and work with endurance in close cooperation with the handler.

Lord Tweedmouth's surviving breeding records document the early development. A yellow retriever was mated with a Tweed Water Spaniel, and continued selection shaped the qualities associated with the breed's retrieving, water work and cooperation. The Golden Retriever was recognised as a distinct breed in 1913 and was introduced to Sweden around 1950.

The breed's modern roles extend beyond practical shooting, but its background remains relevant. Searching, interest in objects, endurance and the ability to alternate between activity and waiting are qualities that need to be maintained through breeding and training, including in dogs that live primarily as companions.

## Living with the Breed

The Golden Retriever is best suited to people who want a sociable, trainable dog that can take part in daily life. A friendly breed ideal does not make everyday skills innate: a young Golden Retriever needs to learn to greet calmly, walk on a lead, handle objects appropriately and settle even when a lot is happening around it.

The breed can live well with children, but interaction requires adult supervision. Children should learn to respect the dog's rest, food and signals, while the dog needs training to greet and play without knocking people over or crowding them. The same care applies to other animals. Many Golden Retrievers live with dogs or cats, but introductions should be gradual, with control, distance and a safe retreat for the cat. The individual dog's previous experience and interest in chasing or carrying objects matter.

Flat living can work if there is a realistic plan for toilet breaks and training, as well as space for a wet coat and calm behaviour indoors. A garden is practical but does not replace walks, changes of environment or shared activity. The breed is often sociable, and time alone needs to be built gradually from short, secure periods. How long a particular dog can cope alone cannot be determined from the breed name.

Before buying a puppy, look beyond colour and the parents' titles. Ask the breeder to show official health results, indexes, the date of the eye examination and DNA status. Ideally, meet the dam, ask how close relatives behave at home and request specific examples of activity level, sociability, fears and recovery. Choose a litter whose documented qualities and the breeder's goals match the life you can genuinely provide.

## Appearance & Coat

The Beagle is a compact, sturdy dog that should look athletic without being coarse. Its body is well balanced, its legs are strong and its chest is developed for sustained work. The long, low-set ears lie close to the cheeks, while the strong tail is carried high when the dog is moving.

The breed standard gives a desirable height of 33–40 cm at the withers. According to Swedish breed guidance, an adult usually weighs 10–15 kg. Body condition matters more than the number on the scales: a well-muscled working dog and a less active companion may weigh differently despite being the same height.

The coat is short, dense and protective in bad weather. Black, tan and white tricolour is familiar, but the standard also permits several two-colour and mottled combinations. The tip of the tail must be white.

Coat care is straightforward. Regular brushing catches loose hair, particularly during heavier shedding. At the same time, check the skin, paws, nails and teeth. Drop ears can increase the risk of ear inflammation, but healthy ears should not be cleaned unnecessarily. Head shaking, scratching, redness, pain, unpleasant-smelling discharge or recurring trouble should be assessed by a vet.

## Temperament & Personality

A typical Beagle is friendly, lively and curious, with an even temperament and a keen desire to be involved. The breed was developed to work closely with people and other dogs and is often sociable at home. However, it was not bred to wait for instructions at every turn. A hunting Beagle must make its own decisions and persist with a trail, which can easily look like stubbornness in everyday life.

Many Beagles live happily with children and other dogs. This is a common breed tendency, not a promise about every individual or encounter. Children need to learn to leave the dog alone while it eats or rests, and an adult should always supervise interactions actively between a dog and young children.

Using its voice is part of the breed's work. A Beagle may bark or give a resonant hunting cry when following scent, becoming excited or seeking contact. The amount of noise varies. Adequate activity, thoughtful training for time alone and calm household routines can reduce unnecessary noise, but anyone who needs a completely quiet dog should choose another breed.

Food is often a powerful motivator. That can make reward-based training easier, but it also means that food on worktops, open bins and edible things found outdoors can quickly become a problem.

## Training & Exercise

The Beagle needs daily physical activity, mental training and, above all, purposeful scent work. A fixed number of minutes will not suit every dog: age, health, hunting, pace and other activities all affect the appropriate workload. A good routine includes walks with time to sniff, longer outings over varied ground and regular tasks that let the dog search or follow trails.

Blood tracking, human scent tracking, nosework and simple search games make excellent use of the breed's greatest strength. Owners interested in hunting can develop the Beagle's traditional work as a driving hound. In Sweden, the breed works alone when hunting hare, roe deer, deer and fox, while blood tracking can also build skills for finding wounded game. Not every individual suits every quarry; hunting style, speed and voice all matter.

Use rewards and increase difficulty gradually. Short sessions, clear cues and rewards the dog genuinely values are more effective than harsh corrections. Part of the daily food allowance can be used for training so that rewards do not add more calories than intended.

Recall deserves particular care. A Beagle that finds a fresh trail may value the scent more highly than its handler, even if recall works in a quiet setting. Begin without distractions, continue on a long line and increase the challenge only when the dog succeeds. Many Beagles need a long line or a securely enclosed area for greater freedom. Do not let the dog off near traffic or wildlife simply because recall worked the day before.

Teach the dog to settle as well. A Beagle that gets both purposeful work and rest is often easier to live with than one kept constantly busy.

## Health

The Beagle is generally considered a healthy breed, but uncommon diseases can still affect individual dogs. Swedish breed information mentions thyroid disorders, intervertebral disc disease, epilepsy, steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis and hip dysplasia. The Swedish breed-specific breeding strategy, known as RAS, also covers the inherited conditions Musladin–Lueke syndrome, or MLS, and Lafora epilepsy.

When speaking to a breeder, ask for specific answers:

- What are both parents' test results for MLS and Lafora? If one parent is a carrier, the other should be genetically clear under the breed's breeding strategy.
- Is there epilepsy, meningitis, back disease, a thyroid disorder or another recurring problem among close relatives?
- How have the parents' temperament and hunting ability been assessed?
- Which current recommendations and registration rules has the breeder followed for this particular mating?

Hip dysplasia occurs at a low frequency, but the Beagle has no breed-specific requirement for official hip status in the Swedish Kennel Club's 2026 registration rules. Ask what the breeder has actually investigated and why instead of assuming that one generic testing list applies. Rules and recommendations can change from year to year.

Weight is an important everyday consideration. Measure food, include training rewards in the daily allowance and monitor the dog's body condition over time. Adjust the ration to age, work and activity level, and seek veterinary advice if weight rises or the dog needs an individual plan. Keep food, medicines and bins out of reach too; a food-loving Beagle can be both quick and inventive.

## History & Origins

The Beagle developed in Great Britain as a small driving hound for hunting on foot, particularly hare. The breed name has been documented since the fifteenth century, but the recognisable modern type was not established until the 1870s. In the British tradition, several Beagles worked together in a pack while the hunters followed on foot.

The first known Beagles in Sweden were shown in Gothenburg in 1891. Swedish breed development gathered pace when Svenska Beagleklubben, the national breed club, was founded in 1953. The work was adapted to the Nordic hunting tradition: instead of hunting in a pack, a Beagle normally works alone to search for, raise and drive game while giving voice.

That history is easy to recognise in today's dog. The nose close to the ground, endurance, independence and voice are not minor quirks separate from its role as a family companion. They are central to how the breed works and need a reasonable outlet even in a home where the dog does not hunt.

## Living with the Breed

The Beagle is best suited to a home that appreciates an active, sociable, scent-led dog and can plan for safety and noise. The daily routine matters more than the size of the home. Living in a flat can work if the dog receives suitable activity, can settle indoors and does not disturb the neighbours. In a building with poor sound insulation, be prepared for the breed's voice to become a problem.

A garden does not replace walks or purposeful work, and fencing must be secure. Away from an enclosed area, a well-fitting harness and long line are often more useful than hoping for perfect recall. Food and bins need to be stored where the dog cannot reach them.

Time alone should be introduced gradually, beginning with very short periods and taking account of the dog's age and response. Guidance from the Swedish Board of Agriculture says dogs should be taken out at least every six hours during the day, and more often if they are puppies or older dogs. This is guidance about outings, not a statement that a particular dog can cope alone for that long. A Beagle that becomes anxious, howls or cannot settle needs smaller steps, more company and a routine better suited to that individual.

Cats can live in the same home, but introductions should be slow and controlled. The cat needs dog-free spaces and clear escape routes, and the dog must never be allowed to rehearse chasing it. Take particular care with rabbits, rodents and birds: the breed's hunting background means safe coexistence cannot be assumed.

Choose a Beagle if you want scent work to be part of daily life and enjoy an independent, enduring dog that makes itself heard. Choose another breed if you want a quiet dog that is easy to trust off the lead, is content with short walks or must routinely spend long working days alone.

The German Spaniel (Wachtelhund) is a specialist forest hunting dog for an active hunter, not a companion dog that occasionally comes along on a shoot. A trained dog can also work on wounded-game tracking and retrieve on land and in water.

The key question before buying is therefore not whether the family can provide a great deal of exercise, but whether the dog will regularly hunt in the way for which the breed was developed. Walks, running and other activities can build fitness and teamwork, but they do not replace the breed's main job.

## Appearance & Coat

The German Spaniel (Wachtelhund) is a medium-sized, muscular and slightly rectangular dog with strong bone. It should look like an enduring working dog and must never appear high on the leg. Weight varies with size; females are often slightly lighter than males.

The coat has a dense undercoat and a strong, close-lying outer coat. The outer coat is usually wavy but may be curly or straight. The ears, backs of the legs and underside of the tail carry longer hair. The breed standard has two main colour groups: solid brown or, less commonly, red; and brown roan or, less commonly, red roan. Piebald patterns and tan markings also occur within these colour groups.

The coat should be brushed and bathed when needed but is not trimmed. Hair between the toes may occasionally need shortening. For a hunting dog, a check after the day's work matters more than a rigid weekly timetable: feel over the skin, legs and paws, remove seeds and twigs, and look for wounds or ticks. Dry a wet dog and inspect the ears. A bad smell, repeated head shaking, brown debris or irritation in an ear calls for veterinary advice, not experiments with strong cleaning products.

## Temperament & Personality

A typical German Spaniel (Wachtelhund) should be friendly, steady and free from aggression towards people, while showing strong hunting drive, courage and independence in the forest. This distinction matters: sharpness towards game is a working trait and is not the same as aggression in everyday life.

The breed standard describes a dog that learns readily and adapts well, while the breed club stresses both independence and willingness to cooperate. That does not mean every individual will be easy or quiet at home. Hunting drive, range, voice, sharpness, responsiveness and ability to settle vary between dogs and bloodlines. Ask how both parents behave during practical hunting and once work is over, and request information about siblings and previous offspring where it is available.

A German Spaniel (Wachtelhund) can live happily in a family when the adults take responsibility for hunting, training and recovery. A dog and young children should always have an adult present, and the dog needs a resting place where it will be left alone. Living with other dogs may work well, but sociability must be assessed in the individual. A cat or small pet requires an especially careful introduction, and the animals must be kept apart whenever nobody is supervising. Early familiarity does not remove the risks associated with the breed's strong hunting drive or guarantee that a particular pair of animals will live safely together.

## Training & Exercise

Practical hunting and a planned introduction to the work are at the heart of training a German Spaniel (Wachtelhund). The breed is suitable only for an active hunter with access to ground where a short-driving dog can work appropriately. It also needs year-round physical conditioning and mental activity; a set number of minutes per day cannot suit every dog, day or stage of training.

As a short-driving dog, it should find game, follow the scent accurately with a consistent, clearly audible hunting voice and return when the quarry leaves the area being hunted. The Swedish Kennel Club often gives 5–30 minutes as a typical range for a drive, but the current breed strategy explains that duration depends on contact with the quarry: a dog may break off sooner when the animal moves well away and work for longer when it circles or stands its ground. The time is guidance, not a promise for every drive.

Priorities from an early age include:

- contact, recall and a confident return to the handler
- steadiness and the ability to switch between activity and rest
- a woodland search suited to the ground, quarry and type of hunting
- tracking, retrieving and water work introduced progressively and under good control
- calm handling of paws, ears and body after a day's hunting

Breed-club tests assess qualities including scent-trail interest, woodland search, voice while chasing, response to gunfire, search and pursuit, and retrieving. Test results therefore say more about the parents' working ability than broad descriptions such as “from working lines” or “easy to train”. Outside the hunting season, fitness, obedience, tracking, retrieving and confidence in water should be maintained in a plan that allows for the dog's age, health and recovery.

## Health

The current Swedish breed strategy describes the German Spaniel (Wachtelhund) as broadly sound, but its work makes hunting injuries a major practical health risk. The insurance information reported in that document identifies trauma as the most common reason for veterinary claims. Check the dog after hunting and seek veterinary care for lameness, pain, wounds, an eye injury or a change in general condition.

Hip dysplasia, HD, and elbow dysplasia, ED, are monitored through radiography and official grading. The Swedish Kennel Club's current registration rules require both parents to have official hip and elbow results before mating. An HD index is also calculated. A radiographic grade is a breeding tool and, on its own, does not show whether an individual dog has or will develop clinical problems.

The Swedish Wachtelhund Club's puppy-referral rules go further than the Kennel Club's registration requirements. They include HD grade A or B, ED grade 0, hunting assessment and an approved response to gunfire for breeding dogs. Rules and recommendations can change, so always check the current versions and distinguish between what is required for registration and what the breed club requires for its own referral service.

The information on allergies and ear inflammation is not entirely consistent. The Swedish Kennel Club's breed information notes an increase and advises buyers to check parents and siblings. The current breed strategy, however, says that no disease has been identified as specific to the breed or clearly more common than average. Ask specifically about recurring itch, skin disease and ear problems in the family without assuming that every German Spaniel (Wachtelhund) will be affected. The Kennel Club's breed information also mentions an eye health programme, while the breed-specific registration provisions expressly list official HD and ED results.

## History & Origins

The German Spaniel (Wachtelhund) comes from Germany and was shaped as a versatile dog for hunting in forest and water. Similar hunting dogs have been known for several centuries, but organised studbook breeding of the modern breed began around 1900. Early breeding developed the brown and brown-roan colour lines while keeping hunting function at the centre.

The breed reached Sweden during the Second World War through contacts between hunters. The first Swedish registrations were recorded in 1942. The dogs were used there as forest hunting dogs that drove game with an audible voice and as water retrievers, among other roles. Interest rose markedly during the 1980s when hunters sought an effective short-driving dog, and the Swedish Wachtelhund Club was founded in 1987. Swedish breeding has continued to place great weight on practical hunting and tests that describe search, voice, pursuit, response to gunfire and versatility.

## Living with the Breed

The German Spaniel (Wachtelhund) is best suited to a home where an adult hunts actively, has access to suitable ground and wants to spend substantial time developing as a handler. It is rarely a sensible first choice for someone with no experience of demanding hunting dogs. An inexperienced but active hunter would need close support from the breeder, breed club and knowledgeable handlers from the outset.

A house and large garden are no substitute for work, and living in a flat is not automatically impossible. What matters is whether daily life provides hunting, training, outdoor activity, recovery and a plan that prevents the dog's voice from disturbing neighbours. Time alone should be introduced gradually, beginning with short, calm periods. Do not plan a routine in which the dog is regularly left alone throughout a full working day.

Ask the breeder to show and explain:

- the parents' official HD and ED results and how the indices for the planned mating were assessed
- hunting-test results, response to gunfire and experience from practical hunting
- how search, drive duration, voice, return and cooperation look in real situations
- any history of allergies, ear problems or other recurring conditions in parents, siblings and previous offspring
- the type of hunting and ground for which the litter is intended

A good choice is not about finding the “highest-drive” puppy. It is about choosing a puppy from parents with documented qualities that fit the hunting and handling you can genuinely provide.

The Västgötaspets is a low-set Swedish herding dog with plenty of energy, an inclination to use its voice and an alert manner. It may be small, but it was built to work. The breed belongs to FCI Group 5 and was traditionally used to herd cattle and work on farms.

- **Size:** the ideal height is 33 cm for dogs and 31 cm for bitches. The breed standard permits 32–35 cm for dogs and 30–33 cm for bitches.
- **Weight:** the official breed standard gives no weight. The Swedish Kennel Club uses 9–15 kg as a broad guide, but an individual dog's build, body condition and proportions are more useful than a fixed target weight.
- **Activity level:** high. The breed needs physical activity and mentally engaging tasks every day, but no official hourly quota will suit every individual.
- **Temperament:** the ideal is an alert, energetic and boldly lively dog. Sociability, vocal behaviour and the ability to settle vary between individuals.
- **Coat:** a semi-short, harsh outer coat over a dense, soft undercoat. It sheds and needs extra brushing during moulting periods.
- **Tail:** both a long tail and every form of natural bobtail are accepted. The standard does not prescribe how the tail should be carried.
- **Key health issue:** Swedish Vallhund retinopathy is an inherited retinal disease with a variable age of onset and course. Eye examination and DNA test results provide different information and should be considered together.

The Västgötaspets and the Welsh corgi are separate breeds. Their long body shape is similar, but claims of a proven relationship through the Vikings go beyond the available evidence.

## Appearance & Coat

The Västgötaspets should be low-set without being excessively close to the ground, and its body should appear powerful yet mobile. The ratio of height at the withers to body length is 2:3. The distance from the bottom of the chest to the ground should be at least one-third of the dog's height. These measurements distinguish the correct breed outline from an overly heavy or exaggeratedly low body.

The head is fairly long and tapers towards the muzzle. Pointed, erect and mobile ears contribute to the alert expression. The back should be level, the loin short and strong, and the movement sound, parallel and ground-covering.

The tail may be long or naturally short, in several different lengths. Neither type is more correct, and there is no prescribed tail carriage. Check the registered tail designation rather than drawing conclusions from a photograph. A natural bobtail is not the same as a docked tail.

The coat consists of a very dense, soft undercoat and a semi-short, harsh outer coat lying close to the body. It is shorter on the head and front of the legs and may be slightly longer on the neck, chest and backs of the legs. Brush through the coat during moulting periods to remove loose undercoat. Bathe the dog when it genuinely needs it; a fixed bathing timetable rarely adds anything useful.

Accepted base colours are grey, greyish brown, greyish yellow, reddish yellow and reddish brown. Lighter areas occur on the muzzle, cheeks, throat, underside and lower legs, while darker guard hairs should appear across the back, neck and sides. A lighter harness marking over the shoulders is desirable. White markings are allowed, but only to a limited extent. Colour and markings do not alter the dog's everyday needs.

## Temperament & Personality

The Västgötaspets is first and foremost attentive and ready to act. The breed standard describes alertness, energy and bold liveliness, but it does not promise that every individual will be easy with all people, animals and environments. Inheritance, early experience, daily life and training all help shape the outcome.

Barking is not a minor detail in this breed. In the Swedish Kennel Club's BPH behavioural analysis, about 40 per cent of participating dogs barked or whined during parts of the assessment in which vocalising was not expected. The data covered 218 Swedish-born dogs born in 2003–2018, only 6.2 per cent of the relevant population, so the figure describes the participants rather than every Västgötaspets. Even so, it shows why a prospective owner should ask how the parents react to noises at the door, visitors and activity outside the home.

The same BPH material paints a broadly confident and energetic picture, with few threatening reactions when meeting an ordinary stranger. Responses varied more when an unusually dressed person approached. BPH should therefore be used to guide questions about a litter's parents and relatives, not as a guarantee about a puppy.

Historically, the Västgötaspets drove cattle by working close to their bodies, using both its voice and nips at the animals' hind legs. This does not mean that every individual will automatically herd or nip people. In breed-club tests conducted in 1994–2013, 52 per cent of the dogs tested were judged to have good, very good or excellent herding aptitude, while 48 per cent were assessed as having little or none. Train the behaviour your dog actually displays rather than working from a breed stereotype.

## Training & Exercise

The Västgötaspets needs to move, use its nose and solve problems every day. Brisk walks, woodland outings, tracking, scent work, obedience, herding and other dog sports can all play a part, but a fulfilling routine does not have to be a competition schedule. Variety and cooperation matter more than reaching a set number of minutes.

Adjust the amount to the dog's age, fitness, health and previous experience. After suitable activity, an adult dog should recover, settle at home and maintain a stable body condition and sound movement. If the dog becomes increasingly over-aroused, stiff, reluctant to move or unable to rest, the routine needs adjusting. More exercise is not always the answer; learning to settle, sleep and clear breaks matter too.

Start reward-based training for recall, walking calmly on a lead, handling and a cue to stop barking from an early age. Reward moments when the dog chooses to settle of its own accord. Simply intervening once barking is already intense rarely teaches the dog what to do instead. While building the new habit, also reduce avoidable triggers such as an unrestricted view of a busy entrance.

Do not calculate a puppy's exercise using the rule of five minutes per month of age; there is no scientific evidence for that general formula. Instead, let the puppy explore safe surfaces at its own pace, alternate short experiences with rest and increase duration and difficulty gradually. Do not push a tired puppy to continue. Delay repetitive, high-impact activity until its body and technique are ready, while remembering that normal, controlled movement builds strength, balance and confidence.

## Health

The principal breed-specific health issue to understand is Swedish Vallhund retinopathy, a progressive disease of the retina. Changes may begin without any noticeable loss of vision. In other dogs, the condition progresses to difficulty seeing in low light and later to impaired daytime vision. Age of onset and rate of progression vary, even between closely related dogs, so it is inaccurate to say that the disease is always mild or always leads to blindness.

Research has found a strong association between the retinopathy and a LINE-1 insertion in the MERTK gene. It should not be confused with BEST1-related canine multifocal retinopathy; BEST1 was one of several known genes that did not explain the Västgötaspets disease in the earlier study. The later MERTK study describes the insertion as a strong candidate for the disease-causing mutation, while leaving parts of the functional mechanism unresolved.

A DNA result applies to the genetic variant that was tested. An eye examination shows what the dog's eyes looked like at a particular point in time. Ask which test was performed, which laboratory analysed it, the parents' exact results and when they were last examined by an ophthalmologist. Ask to see the registered results rather than accepting the phrase “tested for everything”.

The Swedish Kennel Club's 2026 registration rules impose no breed-specific requirement for hip, elbow or eye examination results in the Västgötaspets. That does not make such information irrelevant. The breed club's 2019 breeding strategy recommends known hip status and an estimated mean hip index of at least 100 for the litter. Under the club's current puppy-referral rules, the litter's inbreeding coefficient must be stated; a current hip index must be listed when available, while hip results and the year of the eye examination may be shown. Ask for the actual results and how the breeder has weighed them, not merely whether the formal minimum has been met.

Seek veterinary advice if the dog starts hesitating in the dark, collides with objects, develops changes to its eyes, or shows pain, stiffness or an altered gait. A low body shape is not a diagnosis in itself, and old survey figures from a limited group should not be turned into a firm prognosis for a puppy.

## History & Origins

The modern history of the Västgötaspets is well documented from the early 1940s. Count Björn von Rosen drew attention to the short-legged spitz type he remembered from Västergötland. Together with headteacher Karl-Gustaf Zetterstén, he surveyed the remaining dogs, particularly on the Vara plains. Zetterstén went on to lead most of the practical breeding work.

The Swedish Kennel Club recognised the breed as the Swedish Vallhund in 1943. It was given the name Västgötaspets in 1953. The dogs' herding ability was preserved while the type became more consistent.

Further back, the story is less certain. The resemblance to the Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh corgis has led to theories that dogs were transported between Sweden and Britain during the Viking Age. The official breed standard does not establish the direction of any such connection, and modern cynology regards the breed's Swedish origin as settled. It is therefore reasonable to describe it as Swedish and its modern recovery as documented, but not to present a particular Viking journey or a definite corgi relationship as fact.

## Living with the Breed

The Västgötaspets can live successfully in a house or flat if its routine provides enough activity, rest and help with managing noise. The size of the home matters less than whether barking disturbs neighbours, the dog can settle and the owner can offer meaningful daily activity. In a building with poor sound insulation, have a clear plan for door noises, watching from windows and time alone from the outset.

Adults must supervise interactions with children. Teach children to leave the dog alone when it is eating, sleeping or choosing to withdraw, and give the dog an undisturbed resting place. If it tries to control running children by barking or nipping, interrupt the behaviour calmly and redirect it to a trained alternative. This is neither something a child should tolerate nor behaviour that every Västgötaspets will display.

Living with a cat or other dogs depends on the individuals and the introduction. Begin with scent exchange and separation, give the cat safe escape routes and keep the dog under control during the first meetings. Allow more freedom only when both animals can remain calm. Ask how the puppy and its parents behave around other animals; the breed name is not a substitute for that information.

Time alone must be introduced gradually through brief, uneventful absences. There is no fixed duration that every adult Västgötaspets can manage, and a dog that barks or becomes distressed when left needs a slower plan. A camera can show whether the dog is genuinely resting, pacing, vocalising or trying to escape.

When choosing a puppy, compare more than appearance and titles. Ask for the parents' registered eye and hip information, the exact DNA result for retinopathy when one is cited, the litter's inbreeding coefficient and relevant temperament information. Ideally, meet the dam and ask specific questions about vocal behaviour, recovery after excitement, unfamiliar people and daily life with other animals. A good match is not simply a typical-looking dog, but an individual whose energy, voice and needs fit the life you can genuinely provide.
