## Quick Facts

The Border Collie is a British sheepdog for someone who wants to work with, train and give their dog meaningful tasks throughout its life. The breed is highly trainable and has great stamina, but those same qualities often make it more demanding than a dog bred primarily for companionship.

- **Dog type:** purebred sheepdog, recognised by the FCI in Group 1
- **Size:** medium; the ideal height for males is about 53 cm, with females usually slightly shorter
- **Weight:** approximately 12–20 kg, with variation according to sex and build
- **Life expectancy:** approximately 10–15 years
- **Coat:** smooth or moderately long double coat in many colours
- **Typical traits:** alert, biddable, responsive, intelligent and strongly motivated to work
- **Best suited to:** a committed owner who enjoys regular training and can teach both activity and rest

The key question before buying is not whether the family walks for a set number of hours, but whether daily life allows time for regular training and cooperation. A Border Collie needs to use its brain, express its herding instincts in controlled ways and also learn to settle at home.

## Appearance & Coat

The Border Collie is an athletic, well-balanced dog, built for agility and sustained work rather than for a uniform appearance. The body is slightly longer than the height at the withers, and movement should be free, smooth and efficient. The breed standard gives an ideal height of 53 cm for males and slightly less for females, although both size and build vary noticeably within the breed.

The standard describes two coat varieties: smooth and moderately long. Both have a dense, medium-textured outer coat and a soft, dense undercoat that provides weather resistance. The moderately long coat forms more of a mane, breeching and brush, while the smooth coat lies closer to the body. Many colours and markings occur; black and white and tricolour are common, but the standard permits considerable variety provided white does not predominate.

The coat is basically straightforward to maintain. Brush as often as needed to remove loose undercoat and prevent matting, particularly behind the ears and in areas of feathering. More frequent brushing is needed during periods of heavier shedding. Bathe when necessary. A dog that works or trains outdoors should also be checked afterwards: examine the paws, nails, skin and coat for injuries, grass awns, ticks and debris.

## Temperament & Personality

The Border Collie is attentive, cooperative and extremely quick to notice patterns. It therefore learns not only what its owner intends to teach, but also which sounds predict a walk, how people normally move and which behaviours produce a response. Highly trainable does not automatically mean easy to live with; unclear routines and accidental rewards can establish behaviour just as quickly as considered training.

Herding depends on the dog noticing and influencing movement. In everyday life without sheep, the same sensitivity can be directed towards cars, bicycles, runners, children or other animals. Staring, stalking, cutting off a path and chasing are signals to address early. They should be interrupted calmly and replaced with a trained alternative, not encouraged as an amusing quirk.

A Border Collie can live successfully in a family, but the breed is not universally “good with children” regardless of the individual and environment. Running, shouting and fast play can trigger herding behaviour or stress. Children and dogs therefore need adult supervision, and the dog needs an undisturbed resting place. Living with a cat or other dogs can also work, especially with thoughtful introductions, but cannot be guaranteed on the basis of breed alone. The cat should be able to withdraw and the dog should be taught to leave it alone.

## Training & Exercise

A Border Collie needs both physical activity and tasks requiring concentration every day, but it is not possible to specify a number of hours that suits every individual. Age, health, temperament, previous training and work determine the appropriate load. A good routine alternates movement, problem-solving, cooperation and recovery.

Walks in varied surroundings, free movement where it is safe, scent work, obedience, tracking, herding and other dog sports engage the dog in different ways. Choose activities in which the dog must listen and make decisions, not merely run quickly. Endless ball throwing or other highly arousing repetition is a poor measure of whether the dog’s needs have been met; it can increase anticipation without teaching the dog to settle.

Keep training sessions short, clear and reward based. Give everyday skills such as recall, lead walking, stopping at a distance and disengaging from movement as much attention as tricks or competitive exercises. Reward calm behaviour too: lying in a designated place, waiting while something happens and sleeping after activity. A Border Collie that is always offered more high-speed activity can become extremely fit without learning how to rest.

Puppies and young dogs need controlled experiences, not a miniature version of an adult training schedule. Build confidence in different environments, allow the body to mature and increase physical load and difficulty gradually. If the dog becomes more scattered, noise-sensitive or fixated despite receiving more activity, the answer may be a better balance and professional help rather than still harder exercise.

## Health

The Border Collie is regarded as comparatively healthy, but the breed has documented conditions that a puppy buyer should understand. Hip dysplasia (HD), Collie eye anomaly (CEA), other retinal changes, epilepsy and osteochondrosis affecting mainly the shoulder are among the areas highlighted by the Swedish Kennel Club and the Swedish Sheepdog Society.

When assessing a Swedish-registered litter, start by checking the parents’ official hip status and eye examination. Under Swedish Kennel Club rules, the eye result must be recorded before mating and would normally be no more than one year old. Check the registered results and also ask about epilepsy, recurring seizures, shoulder problems and early deaths among siblings, parents and other close relatives. Normal results for two parents do not describe the health of an entire family line.

DNA tests are available for several inherited conditions in the breed, including CEA, IGS, TNS and sensory neuropathy. Which tests are relevant depends on ancestry and current recommendations. Ask the breeder to explain what has been tested and why. For recessive diseases, a healthy carrier is not the same as an affected dog; what matters is planning the mating so puppies cannot inherit the disease variant from both parents. A DNA test does not replace a clinical eye examination, joint results or knowledge of the wider family.

A dog with Border Collie collapse (BCC) may be completely symptom-free at rest but become disorientated, unsteady or fall during or shortly after intense activity. The dog may appear to recover after 5–30 minutes, but any collapse must be taken seriously and assessed by a vet. BCC is not the same as ordinary fatigue, heatstroke or the dynamin-1-related EIC variant more commonly seen in Labrador Retrievers. Stop the activity immediately if the dog’s focus or movement changes abnormally.

## History & Origins

The Border Collie developed in the border country between England and Scotland as a working dog for sheep farming. Selection was based for a long time on practical herding ability: the dog needed to read livestock, work at a distance and respond to its handler’s signals in demanding conditions. This functional background explains the breed’s eye, stalking movement, endurance and strong drive to control movement.

The FCI recognises the Border Collie as a British sheepdog subject to a working trial. In Sweden, function also has an unusually explicit place in registration. The breed is entered in the Swedish Kennel Club’s dedicated sheepdog register, REG V, and a Swedish-born Border Collie can only be registered when both parents have passed a herding trial held by Svenska Vallhundsklubben (SVaK) or have an approved equivalent qualification from abroad. Appearance can consequently vary more than in many other breeds, while working ability remains central to the Swedish breeding model.

## Living with the Breed

Living well with a Border Collie requires planning, but not constant entertainment. The goal is a dog that can work with focus when needed and rest when nothing is happening. That balance is best suited to a home where someone genuinely enjoys dog training and where responsibility does not depend on children exercising the dog.

Living in a flat is not automatically ruled out, and a large garden does not guarantee a good life. Access to suitable training environments, safe exercise and a routine that can genuinely be maintained matter more. In a busy area, the owner must be able to manage traffic, bicycles, runners, sounds and encounters without the dog becoming stuck in herding or constant vigilance.

Time alone should be trained gradually, beginning with very short periods and adjusted to the dog’s age and reactions. The Swedish Board of Agriculture’s advice that dogs should be taken out at least every six hours during the day is not a promise that a dog will be comfortable alone for that long. Consider filming early sessions and step back if the dog paces, pants, barks, damages things or cannot settle. A routine involving repeated long working days without help is a poor starting point for this breed.

Before buying a Swedish puppy, check at least three things for both parents: a registered hip status, a valid eye result and a pass in an approved herding trial. Then ask about epilepsy and joint health in close relatives, relevant DNA tests, how the parents behave both at rest and at work, and what support the breeder provides after the purchase. The best match is not about finding the “cleverest” puppy, but choosing one whose temperament and working drive suit what you can offer throughout the dog’s life.

## Quick Facts

The Olde English Bulldogge is a modern American bulldog breed with its own standard from the United Kennel Club (UKC). It is not the same breed as the English Bulldog, and its name does not mean that it is an unbroken continuation of the historic English bulldog. There is no FCI breed standard for the Olde English Bulldogge, so it is not an FCI-recognised breed.

- **Background:** an American breeding project begun in 1971 to create a more functional, older-style bulldog.
- **Recognition:** the UKC recognised the breed on 1 January 2014. The FCI has no standard for the Olde English Bulldogge.
- **Size under the UKC standard:** adult males are approximately 43–51 cm and 27–36 kg; females approximately 41–48 cm and 23–32 kg. These figures apply from two years of age, and balance matters more than maximum size.
- **Overall impression:** medium-sized, very muscular and powerful, yet balanced and mobile.
- **Coat:** short, close-fitting and fairly easy to maintain.
- **Most important check before buying:** assess the actual dog's breathing, movement and temperament, and verify documented health screening for the parents and close relatives.

Because the breed has no FCI standard, buyers need to pay particular attention to identity. Ask which registry issued the pedigree and compare the breeder's information with that registry's current standard. The figures above are UKC guidelines and do not describe every dog sold under the breed name.

## Appearance & Coat

An Olde English Bulldogge should combine strength with function. The UKC describes a powerful, slightly rectangular dog with a broad, deep chest, well-muscled legs and a fluid, energetic gait. At a trot, the legs should not cross, the feet should not interfere and the front stride should not become heavy or pounding. A very large or heavy dog is therefore not automatically more typical of the breed.

The head is large in proportion to the body, but must not be so exaggerated that it affects sight or breathing. The muzzle is broad and deep, the nostrils should be open, and heavy wrinkling is undesirable. Look at the dog from the front and side: the nostrils should have a clear opening, the eyes should be unobstructed, and the dog should be able to rest with its mouth closed without struggling for air.

The UKC prefers a full, natural tail and accepts a straight tail or the characteristic shape it likens to a crank or pump handle. A natural bobtail, screw tail or sharply kinked tail is outside the standard. This is a useful practical point to check, as a very tight tail pocket may need extra attention even though the rest of the coat is straightforward.

The coat is short, close and smooth. Brush it when loose hair needs removing, using the opportunity to check the skin, ears, paws and claws. If the dog has facial folds, keep them clean and dry as needed. The frequency varies between individuals. Redness, odour, discharge, itching or recurring irritation should be assessed by a vet rather than hidden with additional cleaning products.

## Temperament & Personality

The UKC ideal is a confident, friendly and alert dog. That describes the aim of breeding, not how every individual will automatically behave. Genetics, early experience, socialisation, pain and the owner's daily routine all affect the outcome. An adult that is extremely fearful or shows unprovoked aggression is far removed from the temperament described in the standard.

This is a physically powerful breed. Even a friendly dog can knock over a small child, pull an adult off balance or make a tense encounter with another dog difficult to manage. Loose-lead walking, calm behaviour at doors and the ability to release objects are therefore more useful than labels such as “good family dog”. Dogs and young children should always have an adult present, and the dog needs its own place where it can rest undisturbed.

The same care applies around other animals. Some individuals live happily with dogs or cats, while others need more distance and management. Ask for factual information about the behaviour of the parents and the dog concerned, arrange meetings on neutral ground and introduce resident animals in stages. The breed name does not guarantee that the animals will get along.

## Training & Exercise

The Olde English Bulldogge is best trained through clear routines, short sessions and rewards the dog genuinely values. Harsh corrections are not needed to manage a strong dog; they can increase stress and conflict instead. Reward the right behaviour and raise the difficulty only when the dog understands the task.

Prioritise practical skills from the outset:

- walking on a loose lead and turning with the handler;
- waiting at doors and leaving the car on cue;
- returning when called and disengaging from an activity;
- exchanging and releasing objects without conflict;
- settling in a designated place;
- accepting calm checks of the mouth, skin folds, ears, paws and tail.

The breed needs daily physical activity and mental stimulation, but a fixed number of exercise minutes says little about what a particular dog can manage. Build fitness gradually through walks, scent work, balance exercises, training and play with controlled breaks. Puppies should not be exercised like mature dogs, and a heavy adult needs a gradual return to loading after rest or injury.

Let breathing, movement and recovery determine the intensity. Stop if the dog's breathing becomes clearly noisy, if it starts struggling with an open mouth during light work, loses coordination or recovers slowly. Exercise at cooler times on hot days and choose gentler activities when the dog's breathing or condition on the day requires it.

## Health

The Olde English Bulldogge was created with a sound, functional body as an aim, but an aim is not proof that the breed or an individual dog is healthier than an English Bulldog. There is not enough evidence to make reliable general promises about health or lifespan. Judge documented results and the dog in front of you, not a slogan about how the breed was “rebuilt”.

Ask the breeder which examinations were carried out on both parents, when they were done, what the results were and why those particular examinations were selected. Search independently for the parents and close relatives in a database such as the OFA or an equivalent registry. A claim that a dog is “tested” means little without the test name and result, and a missing public record should not be treated as a pass. Also ask about recurring problems in earlier litters and what the breeder has changed in response.

Breathing deserves a separate check. Wide nostrils and a moderate head are positive external signs, but some airway problems only become apparent after exertion. Listen while the dog is resting, sleeping and after brisk movement. Clearly laboured or noisy breathing, open-mouth breathing during light activity, slow recovery, disturbed sleep, repeated retching or difficulty in warm conditions call for a veterinary assessment. A dog with bluish gums or tongue, collapse or an inability to cool down needs urgent treatment.

Watch the movement as well. The dog should be able to rise, walk and trot without obvious lameness, stiffness, crossing limbs or reluctance to bear weight. Check that skin or hair does not irritate the eyes, that skin folds and any tail pocket are healthy, and that the dog can maintain an appropriate body condition.

For a litter bred in Sweden, the parents must be in good physical and mental health. Breeding that risks disease, disability or serious whelping problems in the offspring is prohibited, and dogs used for breeding must be able to reproduce naturally. Do not ask only about laboratory tests. Find out whether mating, pregnancy and whelping take place naturally, and whether both parents can breathe, move and cope confidently with everyday life.

## History & Origins

The Olde English Bulldogge is an American reconstruction, not the historic bulldog preserved unchanged. The UKC describes a breeding project begun in 1971 with the aim of recreating the appearance of the more athletic bulldog type from the English Regency period. The spelling “Olde” and the word “Bulldogge” were chosen to distinguish the new breed from today's English Bulldog.

Its background refers back to bulldogs used in the prohibited English sport of bull-baiting. The history of the modern breed itself, however, begins with the American project of the 1970s. Calling it simply an “old English bulldog” without that explanation gives a misleading picture of its origin.

The UKC recognised the Olde English Bulldogge on 1 January 2014 and publishes its own standard. The FCI's current breed nomenclature has no standard for it. The English Bulldog and Continental Bulldog are separate FCI breeds; their names or standards do not prove the identity of an Olde English Bulldogge.

## Living with the Breed

The Olde English Bulldogge suits someone who wants to live with a compact but very strong dog and is prepared to examine function as carefully as appearance. It can live in a flat if it has daily time outdoors, physical and mental activity, and can settle indoors. The size of the home does not solve pulling on the lead, noise, separation distress or difficulty in warm weather.

Time alone must be introduced gradually. Begin with very short, uneventful periods when the dog feels secure and has been taken out, increasing the duration only if it can rest. A camera can reveal pacing, panting, barking or attempts to escape. Puppies cannot be left like adult dogs, and adults also vary widely.

Before buying, you should be able to answer yes to the following:

- The registry and pedigree are clearly identified and can be checked.
- Relevant health results for both parents are shown with names and dates.
- You have seen at least one parent or the adult dog concerned both at rest and after a brisk walk.
- The dog breathes without obvious effort, moves freely and recovers within a reasonable time.
- The breeder discusses variation and previous problems openly rather than promising a “problem-free bulldog”.
- There is a realistic plan for reward-based training, children or other animals, exercise in cool conditions and gradual alone training.

The most important choice is therefore not between two breed descriptions, but between actual dogs and breeding decisions. A functional body, stable everyday temperament and verifiable information should carry more weight than an unusual colour, the largest possible head or the heaviest possible build.

## Quick Facts

The Labrador Retriever is a medium-to-large retrieving gundog with roots in Newfoundland, Canada. The breed was developed mainly in Britain. It is known for its willingness to work with people and its interest in carrying and retrieving objects. It is also an active working dog, rather than an automatically easy-going family pet.

- **Height at the withers:** the ideal is 56–57 cm for dogs and 54–56 cm for bitches.
- **Weight:** approximately 25–36 kg is a broad guide for an adult, depending on sex, build and body condition.
- **Typical lifespan:** often around 10–12 years.
- **Recognised colours:** black, yellow or liver. Yellow can range from pale cream to fox red.
- **Coat:** short and dense, with a water-resistant undercoat.
- **Original purpose:** to find and retrieve shot game after the shot.

Labradors are bred with different priorities. Some breeders focus on working ability, others on conformation and companionship, while many aim to combine several qualities. Labels such as “working Labrador” and “show Labrador” therefore do not tell you everything about an individual dog. Look at the parents, adult relatives, working records and how the breeder actually lives and works with their dogs.

## Appearance & Coat

A Labrador should be strongly built, compact and agile without becoming heavy or overweight. Typical features include a broad head, a powerful body, well-angulated limbs and the characteristic “otter tail”: thick at the base, tapering towards the tip and covered in short, dense hair. The ideal height is 56–57 cm for dogs and 54–56 cm for bitches. The number on the scales matters less than a visible waist and ribs that can be felt easily beneath the skin.

The coat has short, dense outer hair and a water-resistant undercoat. It provides good protection in cold, wet conditions, but also means that a Labrador can shed heavily, particularly when the undercoat is changing. Brush more often during shedding periods and bathe the dog when it genuinely needs it. A fixed bathing or brushing timetable will not suit every dog.

Check the skin, paws and ears regularly, especially after bathing or swimming. Dry the outer ear if it is damp, but clean it only when necessary. An unpleasant smell, brown discharge, redness or repeated head shaking should be assessed by a vet rather than treated with routine ear cleaning.

The breed standard recognises solid black, yellow or liver; a small white mark on the chest may occur. “Silver” is not a fourth recognised colour and is registered as a colour that does not conform to the standard. The colour label alone, however, does not justify sweeping claims about an individual dog's health.

## Temperament & Personality

The breed ideal is a friendly, intelligent and biddable dog that enjoys working with its handler. Many Labradors seek social contact, respond well to reward-based training and show enthusiasm in both play and work. No breed description is a guarantee, however. Temperament is also shaped by inheritance, early experience, training, health and everyday surroundings.

The retrieving instinct often appears as a desire to carry things in the mouth. Give the dog suitable objects and teach a calm exchange or “drop” cue instead of chasing it when it picks something up. This makes daily life safer while giving the dog an appropriate outlet for a natural behaviour. Food can be a powerful reward, but play, scent work and the chance to retrieve can also be highly effective.

Differences between breeding lines are real, but they are not absolute. Working-bred dogs are often selected for speed, stamina and focused retrieving work. Dogs from more conformation-led lines may have a different build and working style. This does not mean that every working-bred Labrador struggles to settle or that every show-bred Labrador is calm. Ask the breeder for specific examples of the parents' energy, ability to switch off, noisiness, sociability and willingness to work.

A BPH or MH assessment can add information about how a dog responded in standardised situations. It is a behavioural description, not a temperament test that a dog passes or fails. Consider it alongside your own meetings with the dogs and information about their relatives.

## Training & Exercise

A Labrador needs daily physical activity as well as tasks that engage its nose, memory and partnership with the handler. There is no universal number of hours that suits a puppy, an adult working dog, a family companion and a senior. Adjust the amount and intensity to the dog's age, health, experience and recovery.

Walks can be combined with retrieving, searching for people, tracking, obedience, steadiness exercises and simple scent games. Short, focused sessions are often more useful than repeating the same exercise until the dog loses concentration. Rest and the ability to settle are part of training, not proof that the dog has had too little to do.

Early priorities include a reliable recall, walking on a loose lead, calm handling, steadiness and a clear cue for giving up an object. Use reward-based methods and increase the difficulty gradually. If you use plenty of food in training, count it as part of the dog's daily allowance.

An interest in water is common in the breed, but not every Labrador enjoys swimming and no dog is automatically safe in water. Start in shallow, calm water, let the dog set the pace and make sure it has an easy way out. Supervise around fast-flowing, cold or algae-affected water, and do not throw objects so far that an eager dog is pushed beyond its ability.

## Health

When choosing a puppy, the important question is not simply whether the parents have been “tested”, but which examinations were carried out, when they were done and what the results were. A Labrador's joints, eyes and body condition deserve particular attention.

For a Labrador litter to be registered with the Swedish Kennel Club, both parents must have an official hip dysplasia result before mating. A recorded result is not automatically a clear result. The Swedish Labrador Retriever Club recommends stricter selection: both parents should have clear hip and elbow radiographs and should have had an eye examination within the two years before mating, with no hereditary eye disease apart from specified exceptions.

Ask for the parents' registration numbers and check the actual result, date of examination and, where possible, information about siblings, previous offspring and other close relatives. This provides more information than a general statement that the dogs are health tested.

DNA tests can be valuable when they are used for the right disease and the results of both parents are considered together. A prcd-PRA test, for example, can only provide information about that particular form of retinal disease; it does not exclude other eye diseases or replace a clinical eye examination. For recessive conditions such as EIC, a healthy carrier need not become ill, but the other parent's result must be known to avoid producing affected puppies. A large DNA panel is therefore not proof of good overall health.

Excess weight puts strain on the body and should not be accepted as a normal breed trait. Feel the ribs and look for a clear waist from above and from the side. Weigh the dog regularly and adjust meals, chews and training rewards according to its body condition. Research has linked a POMC gene variant in some Labradors with greater food motivation and higher bodyweight, but not every Labrador carries the variant and obesity is not inevitable.

## History & Origins

The Labrador Retriever has early roots on the coast of Newfoundland in Canada, where dogs of a similar type helped fishermen retrieve objects and catches from the water. During the nineteenth century, such dogs were brought to Britain, where the breed was developed into a specialised retrieving gundog.

The Kennel Club in Britain recognised the Labrador Retriever as a breed in 1903. Its work after the shot shaped several qualities that still characterise the breed: an interest in searching for, carrying and delivering objects, a willingness to cooperate at a distance and an ability to work in water and difficult terrain. Labradors now work in shooting, dog sports and several public-service roles, but their working heritage remains relevant even for someone primarily looking for a companion.

## Living with the Breed

The Labrador Retriever can suit many homes when the owner wants to share an active daily life with the dog and has time for both training and recovery. A garden is not essential and living in a flat can work, but the home cannot replace walks, scent work and other meaningful outdoor activity. The dog should also be taught to remain quiet and settled in stairwells and other shared areas.

Around children, adult supervision, clear rules and an undisturbed resting place for the dog are essential. A young or excited Labrador is strong enough to knock over a small child without intending harm. Children should not be responsible for walking a dog they cannot physically manage.

Many Labradors live happily with other dogs and cats, but breed alone does not determine the outcome. Introduce animals gradually, prevent chasing and crowding, and give the cat high or separate escape routes. Do not leave them alone together until their interactions are calm and predictable.

Time alone needs to be taught in stages. A young puppy should not simply be left; begin with very brief periods once the dog feels secure and increase them only when it can relax. The length of time an adult can cope with being alone varies, so judge the dog's behaviour rather than relying on a universal maximum.

Before buying a puppy, you should be able to get clear answers to these questions:

- What activities and kind of daily life has the litter been bred for?
- How do the parents work, behave around people and dogs, and settle in practice?
- What official hip, elbow and eye results are available, and what is known about close relatives?
- Are BPH descriptions, field-trial results or other relevant assessments and achievements available, and what do they show?
- How does the breeder match the different puppies with the lives of prospective owners?

The best match depends on more than colour, sex and a line label. Choose a breeder who can describe the dogs' actual qualities, show verifiable health results and speak honestly about variation within the litter.

## Quick Facts

The Standard Poodle is the largest of the Poodle's four official sizes. It is an active companion dog that needs both close cooperation and substantial coat care. The name **kungspudel** is sometimes used in everyday Swedish, but it is not a separate breed or size. In Sweden, the variant's official name is **Pudel, stor**; on this English page it is **Standard Poodle**.

- **Breed type:** recognised Poodle variety in FCI Group 9, Companion and Toy Dogs
- **Height at the withers:** over 45 up to and including 60 cm; the breed standard allows a further 2 cm of upward tolerance
- **Weight:** the breed standard gives no official weight
- **Coat:** abundant, curly wool coat or a coat that forms cords
- **Ideal character:** alert, active, responsive and easy to train
- **Everyday needs:** daily physical activity, mental stimulation, rest and regular coat care
- **Swedish health programme:** both parents must have an official hip dysplasia (HD) result before mating

A Standard Poodle can suit a committed first-time owner, but the breed is not low-maintenance simply because it is cooperative. A prospective owner needs to enjoy teaching everyday skills, provide purposeful activity and look after the coat even when the weather is wet and the week is busy.

## Appearance & Coat

The Standard Poodle should be balanced and athletic, with a body that is slightly longer than its height at the withers – not completely square. The official height is over 45 up to and including 60 cm, with a further 2 cm of upward tolerance. That tolerance does not make 62 cm the normal target height. Because the breed standard specifies no weight, an adult should be assessed by its proportions and body condition, not against a supposedly official number of kilograms.

The standard recognises two coat structures. The curly-coated Poodle has a dense, fine, woolly and tightly curled coat, while the corded Poodle has a coat formed into long, distinct cords. Companion dogs are often kept in a practical, shorter trim, but a short trim does not remove the need for bathing, working through the coat and clipping.

The approved Poodle colours are broader than many older breed descriptions suggest. Alongside solid black, white, brown, grey and fawn, the current standard recognises several specified multi-coloured patterns. These include white combined with black, grey, brown or fawn, as well as tan-pointed, tricolour and brindle coats. The multi-coloured options were added to the international standard that took effect in Sweden in 2024. Older statements that a Poodle must always be a solid colour are therefore out of date.

The coat grows continuously and needs a plan. How often it needs detangling, bathing and clipping depends on coat length, trim, activity and how readily that particular coat mats. Check all the way down to the skin instead of brushing only the surface. Calmly accustom a puppy to a comb, clippers, a dryer, paw handling and standing still; this makes future care easier.

Standard Poodles are often described as low-shedding, but low shedding does not mean allergy-free. Dog allergens occur in skin and saliva, among other sources, and a person's reaction can differ between individual dogs – even littermates. Someone with allergies should therefore not choose a Standard Poodle solely because of the breed name or a promise of a “hypoallergenic” coat.

## Temperament & Personality

According to the breed standard, the Standard Poodle should be alert, active, loyal and easy to teach and train. In daily life, this often appears as a dog that quickly notices patterns, seeks contact and likes to take part in family activities. That same attentiveness also means the dog can quickly learn unwanted routines when rules, rewards and expectations are unclear.

Being easy to train does not mean that every Standard Poodle has the same temperament, and an intelligence ranking does not explain how a dog behaves in daily life. Results from Poodles that have completed the Swedish Behaviour and Personality Assessment can show shared traits, but they describe the dogs that took part – not every Standard Poodle. Social confidence, activity level, sensitivity to sound, interest in chasing and the ability to settle can vary with inheritance, early experience and training.

If possible, meet the puppy's mother and adult relatives. Pay less attention to whether they can perform a trick and more to how they recover from a surprise, greet without remaining highly aroused and settle when nothing is happening. Ask the breeder which traits genuinely recur in the family and how the planned pairing is expected to work in an ordinary home.

A Standard Poodle can be a good choice for a first-time owner who enjoys training and accepts the coat work. It is less suitable for someone mainly seeking an independent dog or a large dog requiring minimal day-to-day contact and activity.

## Training & Exercise

The Standard Poodle needs physical exercise and mental activity every day, but there is no universal number of minutes that suits every dog. Age, health, fitness, weather, surface and recovery all affect a good plan. A balanced day includes walks and opportunities to sniff, explore, cooperate and rest undisturbed.

The breed often enjoys training in which it can understand a task: loose-lead work, recall, retrieving, scent work, body awareness or other dog sports. Short, clear sessions can be combined with skills practised in real settings. The aim is not to keep the dog occupied constantly, but to develop a dog that can shift between activity and calm.

For a puppy, quality and gradual exposure matter more than a mechanical minutes-per-age rule. Let the puppy move at its own pace on varied but safe surfaces, provide breaks and increase the load gradually. Plan the next session according to how the puppy moves, maintains focus and settles afterwards.

The Poodle's history as a water-retrieving dog explains why water and retrieving often appear in breed descriptions. It does not, however, guarantee that every Standard Poodle wants to swim. Introduce water without force, choose safe locations and teach the dog to enter and leave on cue.

## Health

The most important verifiable requirement for Swedish Standard Poodle breeding concerns hip dysplasia: both parents must have an official hip result before mating for their offspring to be registered under Swedish Kennel Club rules. A statement that the parents are “health tested” is therefore not enough – ask which examinations were performed and check the results.

Hips are graded from A to E. A and B are considered normal, and the Swedish programme for Standard Poodles also permits grade C in breeding. The Swedish Poodle Club's strategy is that dogs graded D or E should not be used. An individual result is still only part of the picture, because both inheritance and environment affect hip development.

The Standard Poodle also has a hip dysplasia index. The index combines the dog's own result with information from relatives; a value of 100 represents the breed's estimated average breeding value at the time of calculation. The Swedish Poodle Club recommends an estimated litter index of at least 97 for a planned pairing. This is a breeding recommendation and should be considered alongside the parents' grades, family results, overall health and genetic diversity – not as a stand-alone quality score for a puppy.

It is easy to confuse the health rules for the Poodle's four sizes. The formal Swedish DNA requirement for prcd-PRA applies to Toy, Miniature and Medium Poodles, not the Standard Poodle. The Swedish Poodle Club nevertheless encourages DNA testing for the eye disease rcd4 in all sizes and recommends eye examinations. A DNA result covers only the specific variant tested; it replaces neither an eye examination nor a broad assessment of the dog's health.

Before buying, these questions are more useful than a long generic disease list:

- What are the official hip results for both parents, and what is the pairing's estimated hip index?
- Are hip results available for adult siblings and other close relatives?
- Have the parents had eye examinations, and which DNA tests have been performed? Ask for the exact test name and result.
- Which recurring diagnoses, movement problems or other health concerns does the breeder know of in the family?
- How old are the older relatives, and how have their function and health developed?

## History & Origins

The Poodle's documented background is European, and France is listed as its country of origin in the international breed standard. The standard describes an origin close to the Barbet and early use in hunting waterfowl. The history of the breed's name is also connected with water and ducks.

The large Poodle variety was closest to the original water work before the Poodle developed further as a companion and show dog in several sizes. The Swedish Poodle Club's breed history explains the classic lion trim as a functional water trim: coat was left on vulnerable areas while other parts were shaved to make movement in water easier. Today's trims mainly serve practical and show purposes, but this connection helps explain the distinctive outline.

Poodle-like dogs appear in European art from the 15th century. Modern breed standardisation came much later, and today's Standard Poodle is judged as a companion dog – not as though every individual were already a trained water retriever.

## Living with the Breed

Living with a Standard Poodle works best when the household plans for three things at once: close cooperation, daily activity and coat care that never entirely takes a break. A dog that can use both body and mind while also learning to rest is usually easier to live with than one given ever more intense exercise alone.

A Standard Poodle can live in a flat if the owner provides regular trips outdoors, suitable activity and calm indoors. A garden can be convenient, but it does not replace walks, exposure to different environments or time together. Barking and restlessness should not be dismissed as inevitable breed traits; instead, consider the situation, reinforcement, stress, lack of suitable activity and the dog's opportunity to settle.

Being left alone must be introduced gradually, starting with short periods during which the dog remains secure. How quickly the training can progress depends on the individual. Before buying, plan for puppyhood, working days and help when needed rather than assuming that an easy-to-train dog will automatically cope alone for a particular length of time.

The breed can live successfully with children, other dogs and cats, but the breed name is not a guarantee. Children and dogs need adult supervision, and the dog needs an undisturbed resting place. Meetings with a cat or another dog should be calm and controlled, with room to create distance. The puppy's previous experiences, the adult animals' behaviour and the owner's introduction matter more than a general yes or no in a breed chart.

Finally, ask the breeder to demonstrate an ordinary coat-care session and explain the trim used on the dogs at home. Combine that practical demonstration with verifiable hip results, clear information about eyes and DNA tests, and an honest account of adult relatives' temperament. That way, your choice is based on the dog you may actually get – not on promises no breed can guarantee.

## Quick Facts

Cockerpoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, not a uniform breed with a shared breed standard. Size, coat, activity level and temperament can therefore differ markedly between individuals. The most useful information about a puppy comes from its actual parents and close relatives, not from a general description of the Cockerpoo.

- **Background:** Cocker Spaniel crossed with Poodle
- **Variation:** the Cocker line and Poodle variety influence size, coat and working style, among other traits
- **Common generation labels:** F1 means a Cocker Spaniel crossed with a Poodle; the letter b in a label such as F1b shows that a later generation has been backcrossed towards one of the parent types
- **Important to know:** the generation label describes ancestry but does not guarantee a particular coat, size, personality or state of health
- **What the owner needs:** time for training, daily activity and regular coat care, plus a willingness to assess the individual dog instead of relying on the cross's reputation

Always ask which type of Cocker Spaniel and which size variety of Poodle are behind the puppy. An English Cocker from working lines may have different traits from a show-bred Cocker, and the difference between Toy, Miniature, Medium and Standard Poodles has considerable practical importance.

## Appearance & Coat

An adult Cockerpoo's size and coat cannot be predicted from one common set of measurements. Poodles come in four size varieties, while the Cocker line and inherited variation also affect the outcome. Ask the breeder which Cocker and Poodle variety were used, the parents' height and weight, and how adult full or half-siblings developed. This is more informative than generic measurements for the entire cross.

The coat may be relatively straight, wavy or curly. It may shed lightly, noticeably or somewhere in between, even among puppies in the same litter. Poodle crosses may shed less than many other dogs, but a curly coat is more prone to tangling, especially when wet. Low shedding therefore does not mean low maintenance.

Check the coat with both a brush and a comb all the way down to the skin. If the comb catches, tangles remain even when the surface looks well brushed. How often the dog needs brushing, bathing and clipping depends on the length and density of its actual coat and on everyday conditions, not on one fixed schedule for every Cockerpoo. Introduce a puppy calmly and early to having its paws, ears and face handled, as well as to a hair dryer and clippers.

Cockerpoos are not allergy-free. Dog allergens are found in substances including saliva and skin material, and the amount varies between individual dogs, even between littermates. Low shedding, a curly coat or an F1b label is therefore no guarantee that a person with allergies can live with the dog. Anyone with allergy symptoms should seek healthcare advice before buying a dog and assume that reactions may differ between individual dogs.

## Temperament & Personality

A Cockerpoo may combine the Cocker Spaniel's liveliness and willingness to cooperate with the Poodle's activity and trainability, but the cross does not produce a predetermined temperament. Sociability, interest in chasing, noise sensitivity, ability to settle and reactions to handling can all vary. Environment, early experiences and training also matter greatly.

Be cautious of promises that every Cockerpoo is an easy first dog or an automatic fit for children. A British questionnaire study containing data on 9,402 dogs found several behavioural differences between common Poodle crosses and their parent breeds. It does not support the idea that the crosses generally require less training. The findings apply to groups and cannot predict an individual puppy, but they show why sales language should not replace a proper behavioural assessment.

Ideally, meet both parents, or at least the mother and other close adult relatives. Observe how they recover after an unexpected noise, approach people without becoming overbearing, cope with frustration and settle after activity. Ask specifically about barking, resource guarding, chasing, time alone, car travel and grooming. Answers describing real situations are more useful than labels such as “nice” or “family-friendly”.

## Training & Exercise

Cockerpoos need daily movement, mental activity and recovery, but no minute-based rule suits every dog. The widely repeated five-minute rule for puppy exercise has no scientific support and should not be used as a strict schedule. Age, body size, health, fitness and recovery should determine the amount. A puppy needs short, varied activities and plenty of rest; an adult may enjoy walks, scent work, retrieving, problem-solving and other training with its owner.

Increase the workload gradually and look at the whole picture. Stiffness, reluctance to move, prolonged over-arousal or unusual tiredness after activity are reasons to reduce the demands and contact a vet when needed. A dog that keeps seeking activity may instead need help settling, better sleep or calm scent work, not automatically a longer and faster walk.

Prioritise these skills early:

- recall and engagement despite scents and movement in the surroundings
- walking calmly on a lead and a reliable stop or drop cue
- calm handling of the ears, paws, mouth and entire coat
- switching between activity and rest
- gradual alone-time training in very small steps
- comfortable car travel and neutral encounters with people and dogs

Use reward-based training and keep the level of difficulty manageable. Cocker ancestry may contribute an interest in scents, birds and movement, while Poodle ancestry is often associated with quick learning. Treat these as possible starting points, not guarantees. Recall needs to work around gradually increasing distractions before the dog is given more freedom.

## Health

Cockerpoos are not automatically healthier than their parent breeds. Another study using owner-provided information compared three common Poodle crosses with their respective parent breeds. No statistically significant difference was found in 86.6 per cent of the comparisons. The result supports neither the claim that the crosses are generally healthier nor that they are generally less healthy. The data were collected at one point in time and describe groups, so they cannot serve as a prognosis for a particular puppy.

The practical safeguard is to assess both parents according to their own breeds and varieties. Ask for a registration number or other verifiable identity, the name of each test, the examination date and the actual result. “Vet checked” or “DNA tested” is not enough unless it is clear what was examined.

### Check the Cocker parent

The puppy referral criteria used by the Swedish Cocker Spaniel Club include documented hip results, a current eye examination and a result for familial nephropathy, FN. These are criteria for the club's referral of purebred Cocker litters, not a formal set of rules for all Cockerpoo litters. They are nevertheless relevant checkpoints for the Cocker parent. Also ask about prcd-PRA, but remember that a prcd-PRA test covers only that specific form of PRA and does not rule out every retinal disease.

### Check the Poodle parent

First establish the exact Poodle variety. In Sweden, Toy, Miniature and Medium Poodles have a health programme for prcd-PRA with recorded results, while Standard Poodles have a different breeding focus in which hip results are central. The Swedish Poodle Club also recommends a patellar examination before breeding Toy and Miniature Poodles. Check what is relevant to that parent's exact variety rather than accepting only that “the Poodle is tested”.

DNA results must also be interpreted as a combination. For an autosomal recessive disease, a healthy carrier can be used without producing affected puppies if the other parent is genetically clear of the same variant, but the test results for both parents must be verifiable. Ask a veterinarian or the relevant breed club to explain any result that is unclear.

## History & Origins

Cockerpoos descend from two breeds with documented working histories. The Cocker Spaniel was developed in Britain as a flushing and retrieving gundog; its name is associated with hunting woodcock. The Poodle has an older European background as a water retriever. Both are now also kept as companions and for a wide range of activities.

The modern cross has become popular as a companion dog, but there is no shared standard that makes size, coat and other traits uniform. Claims about an exact first decade or one original breeding objective are poorly documented and should not be used to predict today's dogs. For an individual puppy, the parents' identities, working lines, health and behaviour matter far more than a simplified origin story.

## Living with the Breed

Cockerpoos can live successfully in many kinds of homes when the individual's needs fit the household's routine. A flat is not an obstacle in itself, but the dog needs reliable routines for toilet breaks, activity and rest, plus training around sounds in stairwells and outside the door. Barking or anxiety is not solved by the size of the home; identify the triggering situations and train at a level where the dog can remain calm.

Time alone needs to be taught gradually. Start once the dog feels secure in the home, leave for a very short time and increase it only while the dog remains relaxed. If the dog barks, howls, destroys things, tries to escape or cannot eat when left, take the training back a step and assess the cause. Severe distress requires help from a veterinarian and a qualified behaviour professional.

An adult should always take responsibility for interactions with children. The dog needs a protected resting place, and children should not disturb it while it is sleeping, eating or trying to move away. Compatibility with cats or other dogs depends on the individuals. Introduce them gradually, use distance and physical separation, and prevent chasing before giving the animals more freedom together.

Before buying a puppy, you should be able to answer the following questions:

- Which Cocker line and Poodle variety were used, and how large are the parents?
- Which recorded health results are available for each parent, with dates and identities?
- How do the parents and adult relatives behave at rest, during handling, around noises, unfamiliar dogs and time alone?
- What are the coats of adult relatives like, and what care do they require in practice?
- How were the puppies raised and introduced to people, everyday sounds, surfaces, handling and brief periods of separation?

A sound assessment starts with documents and observable traits. Do not choose a Cockerpoo simply because it is described as allergy-friendly, easy or perfect for a family.

## Quick Facts

- The Samoyed is a medium-sized Arctic spitz from northern Russia and Siberia. It is still built and temperamentally suited to an active life of sustained work.
- The breed standard defines its purpose as a sled and companion dog. This is therefore not simply a white family pet, but a working polar breed that needs to use its body.
- An adult male weighs about 20–25 kg and a female 16–20 kg. The ideal height is 57 cm for males and 53 cm for females, with a tolerance of three centimetres either way.
- The abundant double coat sheds heavily. Regular grooming, with extra work during a moult, is part of everyday ownership.
- The typical temperament is friendly, open, alert and lively. The breed is also independent, and prey interest, responsiveness and noise can vary considerably between individuals and lines.
- The Samoyed is best suited to someone who wants an active life throughout the year and has time for training, coat care and a dog that takes part in daily life.

## Appearance & Coat

The Samoyed should be an agile, enduring Arctic spitz, athletic rather than heavy. Its body is slightly longer than its height at the withers, the ears are erect, and the well-feathered tail is carried over the back or to one side when the dog is alert. The breed standard gives an ideal height of 57 cm for males and 53 cm for females, in both cases with a tolerance of three centimetres. As a rough guide, an adult male weighs 20–25 kg and a female 16–20 kg.

The so-called “Samoyed smile” comes from the almond-shaped eyes and slightly upturned corners of the mouth. It describes the breed’s expression; it does not promise a particular personality, nor is it a documented mechanism for preventing drool or ice.

The coat has a short, soft, dense undercoat and longer, straighter, coarser guard hairs. Males often have a more pronounced ruff, while a female’s coat is often slightly shorter and softer. Permitted colours are pure white, cream, and white with a small amount of biscuit marking.

Let the condition of the coat determine the grooming routine instead of following a rigid weekly timetable. Work through it to the skin, paying particular attention to places where moisture and loose hair can remain trapped. Grooming needs to be more frequent and thorough during a moult. Bathe the dog when it genuinely needs it and dry the entire coat properly afterwards so that moisture is not left next to the skin. The coat should not normally be clipped or shaved to make routine care easier; discuss any medically necessary clipping with a vet.

## Temperament & Personality

A typical Samoyed is friendly, outgoing with people, alert and lively. The breed standard describes it as highly social and unsuitable as a guard dog. This does not mean that every dog greets people in the same way or that the breed name guarantees confidence in every setting. Breeding, early experiences, training and the individual dog’s disposition all matter.

Swedish breeding goals call for dogs that are approachable, outgoing and at ease with both people and other dogs. BPH behaviour-assessment results from 2015–2025 broadly follow that desired profile. They do not, however, predict how an individual puppy will develop. Look at the parents and close relatives in ordinary life rather than relying only on a breed description or an average.

Independence is part of the way this breed works. A Samoyed should be able to take initiative, remain focused on a physical task and work without being excessively dependent on its handler. In daily life, the same traits can appear as persistence, ideas of its own and a dog that does not always choose to follow you. Training is easier when the task is clear, the reward is worthwhile and repetition is kept purposeful.

Prey interest must also be assessed dog by dog. The breed standard describes the hunting instinct as only weakly developed, while the Swedish Kennel Club’s current buyer guidance warns that a strong hunting instinct may still occur. Do not assume that a Samoyed will be safe off lead simply because of its breed.

## Training & Exercise

The Samoyed needs regular physical activity and generally thrives when some of it has a clear purpose. Work in harness, hiking, carrying a pack and other endurance activities are close to the breed’s intended function. Scent work, everyday training and problem-solving add variety, but they do not replace the opportunity to move and work physically.

As a common starting point for an adult, the Swedish Kennel Club suggests at least an hour’s walk every day plus physical training three or four times a week. Treat this as a guide, not an exact dose. Age, fitness, health, temperature, surface and intensity determine what is appropriate. Puppies and adolescents should build muscle and workload gradually rather than follow an adult dog’s programme.

The dog can learn two separate rules: to lean into the working harness and pull on cue, and to walk on a loose everyday lead. Use equipment made for the activity, teach clear starting cues and increase distance, speed and load gradually. An official polar-dog working merit shows that the dog has completed defined work under the test conditions. It provides useful evidence of function, but it does not prove that the dog is free from joint disease, heart disease or fear in ordinary life.

In warm weather, adjust the workload to the conditions and to that individual dog’s response. Schedule harder sessions for cooler parts of the day, choose a suitable surface, provide water and stop if the dog is not recovering normally. A universal temperature cut-off is misleading because humidity, sun, speed, fitness and the individual dog all affect heat load.

Start recall training early, but never overestimate it. A long line or enclosed space gives the dog room to move when the surroundings are too difficult for safe off-lead exercise. This is particularly important if the dog shows prey interest or is inclined to choose its own route.

## Health

Hip dysplasia, or HD, occurs in the Samoyed. In the breed’s new Swedish breeding strategy, about 20–25 per cent of screened dogs born from 2019 to 2024 received C, D or E results. The figure applies to examined dogs and cannot simply be treated as the rate in the whole population, but hip results are well worth checking when choosing a puppy.

For a litter registered in Sweden, both parents must have an official HD result before mating. The Samoyed is also covered by the Swedish HD index scheme: an average parental index above 100 is recommended, and dogs with D or E results may not be used for breeding. The position is therefore more nuanced than the claim that only A- and B-graded dogs can be included in a mating. Check both parents’ results, their index at the time of mating, and results among siblings and previous offspring in SKK Avelsdata.

The breed club also recommends an eye examination from 18 months of age, with no abnormality or only a finding classed as non-hereditary. The current breeding strategy shows that only a small proportion of Samoyeds were eye examined in 2021–2024. Ask for the actual registered result rather than accepting a general assurance that the line has good eye health.

Diabetes mellitus also deserves attention. A large Swedish insurance study and later Norwegian research both placed the Samoyed among the breeds at highest risk. These studies describe risk at breed level and cannot predict whether a particular puppy will become ill. Ask about diagnoses in close relatives and discuss changes in the dog’s health promptly with a vet.

## History & Origins

The Samoyed comes from northern Russia and Siberia and takes its name from the Samoyedic peoples. In different areas, the dogs were used for hunting, hauling and, later, reindeer herding. They lived closely with people and, according to the breed standard, also helped keep them warm inside their shelters. The modern breed’s official purposes are sled work and companionship.

The small number of dogs brought from Siberia to Western Europe, together with dogs acquired by research expeditions, became the foundation of the Western population. The first Samoyed was registered by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1893. A Swedish-Norwegian standard for the Nordic spitz was published in 1908, and the first English Samoyed breed standard was written in 1909.

This history explains why modern breeding is about more than a white coat and a friendly expression. The Swedish Polar Dog Club works to preserve the breed’s polar traits and practical ability as a sled dog. Anyone choosing a Samoyed should therefore be interested in its function, not only its appearance.

## Living with the Breed

A Samoyed can live in a flat if its needs are properly met outside the home. The size of the property matters less than access to daily activity, recovery and regular time outdoors. In a building with poor sound insulation, find out how vocal the puppy’s close relatives are at home and work on calm behaviour early, because a noisy individual can quickly affect neighbours.

Time alone must be introduced gradually. Begin with very short, calm absences once the puppy feels secure in the home, and increase them only when it can settle. Some dogs learn quickly; others need much more time. Do not plan a puppy purchase on the assumption that your Samoyed will automatically cope with being left for a full working day.

The same safety principles apply with children as with any dog: an adult should be present with young children, and the dog needs a quiet resting place where it will not be disturbed. The breed’s social ideal is encouraging, but a breed label is no substitute for supervision and respectful handling. Take the same care with cats and other animals. Ask how the parents behave, manage introductions carefully, and base decisions on the individual dog’s prey interest and previous experience.

The coat makes its presence felt in daily life. You need to accept loose hair, set aside time for grooming and be able to dry a wet coat thoroughly. The Samoyed is not allergy-free: dog allergens are found mainly in saliva and skin, and levels vary between individuals even within the same breed. Anyone with an allergy should not make a decision based on claims about a white coat, little odour or low shedding.

Check the evidence behind a breeder’s general claims of quality. Look up the parents’ HD status and current index, eye results, BPH assessments and any working merits. Ask how close relatives have performed in harness, behaved around other dogs, settled at home, coped with time alone and managed in warm conditions. Ask the breeder to demonstrate how to groom an adult coat. A working merit records tested function, BPH records observed responses, and health registers show known results. Together they provide a better basis for a decision, but no single record guarantees how a puppy will turn out.

## Appearance & Coat

The Irish Water Spaniel is one of those dogs you recognize across a field. Medium to large in size and powerfully built, this is a strong, athletic spaniel designed to work all day in cold water and rough ground. Males are usually around 53 to 59 cm at the shoulder, with females slightly smaller. Weight often falls somewhere in the 20 to 30 kg range, depending on sex and build. They are sturdy and muscular, but should never look heavy or clumsy. A well conditioned dog has a deep chest, good bone, and a slightly square outline that gives quick, agile movement.

The head is quite distinctive. The muzzle is strong and broad without being coarse, and the face itself is smooth and short coated. On top sits a rounded “topknot” of tighter curls, which flows into long, low set ears covered in rich ringlets. Many people say the breed has a wise, slightly mischievous expression that matches their clownish nature.

The coat is one of the most striking features. The body is covered in dense, crisp curls that help keep the dog warm and protected in cold water. The hair on the throat and front of the neck is smoother, and the tail starts thick at the base with curls, then tapers into a smooth, hairless looking “rat tail” that is very typical for the breed. The only accepted color is a rich liver or dark chocolate brown, often with a subtle purplish tone in certain light.

Coat care is practical but does require commitment. The curls are meant to insulate and protect, not form mats. That means:

- Comb or brush through the coat once or twice a week, using a wide comb on the body and a slicker brush with care on tight curls.
- Check behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, and around the tail base where tangles form most easily.
- Rinse with fresh water after swimming to remove mud, salt, or chlorine, then let the coat dry naturally whenever possible.

Professional grooming every 6 to 10 weeks is a good idea to keep the outline tidy and the coat manageable. Many working homes choose a practical clip that keeps insulation but shortens feathering around the legs and belly. Regular trimming around the feet and between the pads helps with grip and reduces mud in the house. Nails should be kept short and ears checked often, since those long, curly ears can trap moisture if not dried thoroughly after swimming.

With consistent care, the Irish Water Spaniel’s curls stay beautiful, functional, and surprisingly low shedding, which many owners appreciate in daily life.

## Temperament & Personality

Living with an Irish Water Spaniel is a bit like living with a clever outdoor athlete who also has a strong sense of humor. These dogs are intelligent, sensitive, and observant. They quickly learn household routines and often seem to anticipate what will happen next. Many owners describe them as “thinking dogs” that watch their surroundings and respond more thoughtfully than some other lively gundog breeds.

The breed is generally affectionate with its family and often chooses a favorite person, while still bonding with everyone in the household. Around strangers, some individuals can be reserved at first. They are not typically fearful, but they will often take a moment to assess new people before relaxing. Early, positive socialization makes a big difference in helping a young dog grow into a confident adult.

With children, the Irish Water Spaniel can be a lovely companion as long as both dog and children understand boundaries. They tend to enjoy active, respectful kids who like to play fetch, explore outdoors, or practice tricks. Very young children should always be supervised, because this is a strong, sometimes boisterous dog that can accidentally knock a toddler over when excited.

Around other dogs, social skills vary by line and upbringing. Many are friendly and playful, especially if well socialized during puppyhood. Some, particularly entire males, can be a bit pushy or selective about dog friends. They usually do best with calm, neutral introductions and clear guidance from their owner. With cats and smaller pets, a lot depends on early exposure. Some individuals live peacefully with cats, while others may be tempted to chase.

One thing almost all Irish Water Spaniels share is an active mind. Without enough mental and physical outlets, they can become bored and inventive in ways that owners do not love, such as:

- Chewing household items
- Barking at small sounds
- Digging in the garden
- Inventing “games” such as stealing shoes to gain attention

They respond well to a calm, consistent household routine and clear expectations. Harsh handling or shouting does not suit this breed, and can lead to stress or shutdown. Confident, patient leadership paired with kindness brings out the best in them, turning their lively nature into partnership rather than conflict.

## Training & Exercise

The Irish Water Spaniel is a working gundog at heart, bred to search for and retrieve game from both land and water. This background shows clearly in their training and exercise needs. They are not a couch dog that will be satisfied with a short walk around the block. Daily activity that combines physical exercise with mental challenge is essential.

Most young adults need at least 1.5 to 2 hours of varied activity spread throughout the day. This does not mean constant jogging. Instead, focus on a mix:

- Brisk walks where the dog can move at a natural pace
- Off leash running in safe areas, where local rules allow, to stretch out and sniff
- Water work such as swimming or retrieving from lakes and rivers during the warmer months
- Short training sessions several times a day, often 5 to 10 minutes each

This breed is usually quick to learn, but also strong willed. They do best with positive reinforcement, using food, toys, or access to water as rewards. Training games that tap into their natural talents can be especially effective, for example:

- Retrieving dummies or toys from different directions and distances
- Simple scent work, hiding items in the garden and encouraging them to search
- Obedience sequences that involve sits, downs, recalls, and heelwork between fun retrieves

They have a sense of humor and sometimes like to test where the boundaries are. Consistency is key. If a behavior is not allowed, it should never be rewarded with attention or laughter, even if it looks amusing in the moment. Once an Irish Water Spaniel learns that a particular cheeky action works, it can be hard to remove.

<x-quote text="What surprised me most was how much calmer my Irish Water Spaniel became once we added a fixed routine: morning walk, midday brain games, evening swim or fetch. Without that structure he was restless, with it he is relaxed at home." from="Lina, first-time gundog owner" />

Because they are sensitive, correction should be gentle and clear, rather than harsh. Many individuals will shut down or become confused if they feel unfairly treated. If you notice your dog disengaging during training, shorten the session, make the next task easy, and end on a success.

Organised activities can be an excellent outlet. Irish Water Spaniels often excel in:

- Working trials and gundog training
- Agility, thanks to their athleticism
- Obedience and rally obedience, with their focus and intelligence
- Canicross or hiking, as long as you build fitness gradually

A well exercised and trained Irish Water Spaniel is typically a pleasant indoor companion that will curl up near you after a day of activity. Without that outlet, their natural drive can become frustration, which is when problem behaviors appear.

## Health

Irish Water Spaniels are generally robust, but like all purebred dogs they can be predisposed to certain health issues. Responsible breeders work actively to reduce these risks, so choosing a breeder who prioritizes health testing and transparent communication is important.

Some conditions seen in the breed include:

- Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, which can lead to pain and arthritis
- Eye conditions such as cataracts or distichiasis in some lines
- Autoimmune disorders in a minority of dogs
- Ear infections, especially in individuals that swim often and have heavy ear feathering
- Skin irritation or hot spots if the coat mats or stays damp close to the skin

Many national breed clubs recommend health screening for breeding dogs, such as:

- Hip scoring through recognized schemes
- Elbow assessments when required
- Eye examinations by a veterinary ophthalmologist on a regular basis
- Sometimes additional tests recommended in specific countries

A typical lifespan ranges from around 10 to 12 years, with some individuals living longer in good health. Long term wellbeing is influenced by several factors that owners can control:

- Keeping the dog at a lean, fit body condition to reduce joint stress
- Providing regular, moderate exercise instead of sudden bursts after long rest
- Feeding a balanced diet suited to age and activity level
- Maintaining good ear care, especially after swimming, by gently drying and checking for redness or odor
- Keeping the coat free of mats so that the skin can breathe

Because this is an active working breed that often swims and runs in all weathers, prompt attention to small injuries is wise. Cuts on the feet, sore pads, or muscle strains should be rested and checked by a vet if they do not improve quickly. Regular checkups, including dental examinations, help detect issues early and keep your dog comfortable.

## History & Origins

The Irish Water Spaniel has ancient roots in Ireland’s sporting traditions. While the exact path of its development is not perfectly documented, dogs resembling today’s breed were described several centuries ago. They were valued for their ability to retrieve game from icy lakes, rivers, and flooded fields, as well as their skill in dense cover on land.

During the nineteenth century, a breeder in Dublin is often credited with shaping the modern Irish Water Spaniel through careful selection. The result was a dog that combined strength, endurance, and a strong water instinct with a very distinctive look. The tight curls, smooth rat tail, and rich liver color became hallmarks of the breed, along with a reputation for intelligence and independence in the field.

In its homeland and elsewhere in Europe, the Irish Water Spaniel served primarily as a versatile gundog. It could:

- Retrieve shot birds from deep or fast moving water
- Work in marshes and reeds where footing is uncertain
- Search rough pasture and woodland for game
- Return game gently to hand, thanks to a soft mouth

As shooting sports and dog breeding became more formalized, the breed gained recognition in kennel clubs and appeared at dog shows. However, it remained less common than some other gundog breeds, partly because it required dedicated owners who appreciated its strong character and grooming needs.

Today, Irish Water Spaniels are still used as working gundogs in some countries, often by enthusiasts who value traditional skills and versatility. At the same time, more individuals live as active family companions, doing hiking, obedience, agility, or simply joining their owners in outdoor adventures. Their rarity has a positive side: many breeders are passionate preservationists who take care to protect both health and working ability.

For anyone considering the breed, its history explains much about modern behavior. That intense focus, love of water, and need for meaningful work come directly from generations of dogs bred to perform a demanding job in challenging conditions. When those needs are met in a modern context, the Irish Water Spaniel’s heritage shines through as a rewarding partnership between person and dog.

## Living with the Breed

Sharing your life with an Irish Water Spaniel is rewarding, but it is not a casual commitment. These dogs need time, structure, and active involvement from their humans. Before bringing one home, it is worth taking an honest look at your lifestyle.

Time is a key factor. Most owners should plan on:

- At least one longer walk or training session each day, plus two shorter outings
- Several short mental workouts, such as nose work games, obedience practice, or puzzle feeders
- Coat and ear care once or twice a week, plus more drying after swimming days
- Regular grooming appointments if you are not comfortable clipping at home

Financially, costs can be similar to other medium to large active breeds. Annual expenses often include quality food, routine veterinary care and vaccinations, grooming, insurance, and training classes or activities. Unexpected vet costs can arise with any dog, so budgeting for that or having insurance is sensible.

At home, the breed adapts reasonably well to different living spaces as long as exercise needs are met. A house with a fenced garden makes life easier, especially during the teenage months when energy is high. Apartment living is possible for a committed owner who can provide sufficient outdoor activity and mental stimulation every day, regardless of weather.

Essential equipment usually includes:

- A secure, well fitting harness and sturdy lead
- A long line for safe freedom before recall is fully reliable
- A comfortable bed in a quiet corner of the home
- Towels and possibly a drying coat for wet days
- Grooming tools suited to curls, such as a wide tooth comb and slicker brush
- Floating toys and retrieving dummies for water and land games

<x-quote text="We quickly learned that if our Irish Water Spaniel had two good activity sessions and a bit of training, evenings were peaceful. On days we cut corners, he reminded us by pacing and pestering us with toys." from="Oskar, active family dog owner" />

This is not usually the easiest breed for a completely first time dog owner who has little support. However, a motivated beginner who is willing to attend classes, read, and work with experienced trainers can succeed. Using tools like the [Dog Breed Advisor](https://getapet.com/en/dog-breed-advisor) can also help you understand how well this breed matches your daily life.

Living with an Irish Water Spaniel means muddy pawprints, wet dog smell after swimming days, and a fair amount of hair on towels and grooming tools. In return, you get an athletic, intelligent companion that often thrives on shared adventures. For active people and families who enjoy being outdoors in all seasons, and who appreciate a dog with real personality, this breed can be a deeply satisfying choice.

## Quick Facts

The Whippet is a British, FCI-recognised sighthound in Group 10. The breed was developed for speed and work, and the breed standard describes a combination of muscular power, strength and elegance without exaggeration. It is therefore an athletic dog, not merely a slender companion.

The desired height at the withers is 47–51 cm for males and 44–47 cm for females. The breed standard does not specify an ideal weight. Assess weight and body condition in relation to the individual dog's size, muscle and fitness rather than against a fixed number.

Before buying, you should focus particularly on safe exercise, prey drive, cold weather and documented health in the family. A Whippet can be an adaptable companion, but needs opportunities to run safely, gradual training to be left alone and careful management around wildlife and small animals.

## Appearance & Coat

The Whippet should be built to function at speed. The standard calls for, among other things, a deep chest, power over the loin, strong hindquarters and free, long movement with powerful drive. Movement should be parallel and neither short, stilted nor exaggerated. An extremely thin or weak dog is therefore no more typical of the breed than a heavy, cumbersome one.

The difference in desired height between the sexes is small, yet individuals can still differ clearly in build. Because the standard gives no weight, a single number on the scales is a poor criterion for choosing a dog or judging its health. It is better to assess proportions, muscle, movement and current body condition with the breeder or a veterinarian.

The coat should be fine, short and close. All colours and colour combinations are permitted except merle. The breed standard does not state whether the Whippet has an undercoat. You should therefore assess the individual dog's coat density and tolerance of cold rather than assume that every Whippet has exactly the same protection.

The fine coat provides little protection from cold and wet weather. Some Whippets need a well-fitting coat on cold walks, while the weather, activity and individual dog determine when it is necessary. Shivering, slowing down or clearly seeking warmth are signs to stop or provide more protection. Grooming is otherwise straightforward, but the skin, paw pads and nails should be checked after activity in scrub, crusted snow or uneven terrain.

## Temperament & Personality

The breed standard describes the Whippet as gentle, affectionate and even-tempered, with the ability to adapt both at home and in sporting settings. This is the breed ideal, not a guarantee for every individual. Breeding, early experiences, health and everyday training all affect how an individual dog behaves.

Swedish BPH behavioural assessment results provide a more nuanced picture. By July 2024, 373 Whippets had been assessed. Among Swedish-born dogs from 2004–2023, participation amounted to 323 of 8,641 dogs, or 3.7 percent. On average, the assessed group was moderately social, relatively playful and fairly secure and curious. At the same time, there was greater variation in areas including greeting, curiosity and play. The results describe the participating dogs and should not be treated as a promise about a puppy or the whole breed.

With children, calm handling and an undisturbed resting place matter more than the label “family dog”. An adult needs to supervise, and children should not disturb a dog that is eating or resting. Meetings with other dogs should also be introduced in a controlled way, particularly if the dogs differ in size, play style or experience.

A Whippet can live with a cat, but the breed name does not guarantee success. Prey drive and reactions to fast movement vary. Start at a distance with a physical barrier, keep the dog on a lead, give the cat a safe escape route and supervise until both animals are relaxed. A dog accepting the family cat does not reliably predict how it will react to unfamiliar cats or small animals outdoors.

## Training & Exercise

A Whippet needs daily physical and mental activity, but neither the breed standard nor Swedish authority guidance specifies a fixed number of minutes or requires the dog to run off lead at full speed every day. Adjust the workload to age, health, fitness and surface. Walks, scent work, everyday obedience and occasional opportunities to stretch out in a safe place provide a good mix.

Training should be reward-based, progressive and tailored to the individual. Short sessions with a clear goal often work better than many repetitions. Prioritise recall, checking in around movement, waiting calmly, accepting paw handling and settling after activity. Start in easy environments and increase distractions once the behaviour is reliable.

Prey drive is a safety consideration, not a character defect. The breed's background means that fast movement can trigger pursuit, but the strength of that response varies. Recall reduces risk without making every open space safe. Use a lead or long line where wildlife, traffic, cyclists or small animals may appear, and choose properly enclosed areas when the dog is to run free.

Swedish rules also require particular care around wildlife. From 1 March to 20 August, dogs must be prevented from running loose in the countryside, and during the rest of the year you must still be able to stop the dog from driving or pursuing wildlife. Lure coursing and other organised sighthound activities can provide a controlled outlet for the chase, but they are options rather than requirements for a good life.

## Health

The Whippet is not included in any of the Swedish Kennel Club's health programmes, so there are no breed-specific health examinations that must be completed before mating in Sweden. This does not make documentation unimportant. The Swedish Whippet Club's current breed-specific breeding strategy recommends examinations and follow-up that a puppy buyer should ask about specifically.

The breed club recommends cardiac auscultation of breeding dogs, meaning that a veterinarian listens to the heart with a stethoscope. If a murmur is heard, the dog should be examined further by a veterinarian specialising in cardiology. MMVD occurs in the breed, but a murmur is a finding, not a diagnosis in itself. The club also recommends eye examination and BPH behavioural assessment, and advises waiting until the dog is at least two years old before breeding. These are recommendations, not Swedish registration requirements for the breed.

The eye situation needs equally careful wording. A small number of Swedish PRA cases have been documented, while only a small proportion of dogs have been examined for inherited eye disease. The issue can therefore neither be described as common nor dismissed. Ask to see dated results for the parents and how the breeder uses results from relatives.

Injuries deserve more attention than a long list of possible diseases. In the breed club's 2020 health survey, which received responses concerning 367 individual dogs, owners reported that 42.7 percent had experienced an accident requiring veterinary care; wounds were the most common. A survey does not show the risk for every dog, but it supports checking skin, paws and movement after fast activity and choosing surfaces and enclosures carefully.

Also ask about testicular status in males and immune-mediated disease among close relatives. The breed strategy describes clustering in families but not a simple mode of inheritance that a single DNA test can resolve. Information about parents, littermates and older relatives can therefore be more useful than a general statement that the line has been health tested.

Cardiac findings in a Whippet also need to be interpreted with knowledge of the breed. Studies of healthy Whippets show that some ECG and ultrasound measurements can differ from general canine reference values. Tell the veterinarian that the dog is a Whippet and how it is trained. This can reduce the risk of misinterpretation, but must not be used to dismiss a murmur, symptoms or the need for further investigation.

## History & Origins

The Whippet's documented history begins in Great Britain. The breed was mentioned in an official show context in England in 1876, and The Kennel Club recognised it in 1890. Whippet racing is documented from the 1890s, while the breed standard states that the dog was originally used for hunting by sight or scent.

The breed is associated particularly with northern England and racing, but the earliest breeding decisions are not fully documented. Greyhounds and some terrier breeds are often cited as possible influences, while the Swedish breed strategy notes that written accounts from the earliest breeders are lacking. These crosses are therefore best described as likely theories rather than a precise recipe.

The breed's earlier work is still apparent in its construction and interest in movement. Today's Whippet is also an established companion and sporting dog. Its history helps explain speed and prey drive, but should not be used to claim that every individual must compete or reacts to wildlife in the same way.

## Living with the Breed

A Whippet can live successfully in a flat if daily life provides enough time outdoors, activity and opportunities to settle. The size of the home matters less than access to suitable outdoor areas, the noise environment and how often the dog needs to be left alone. For an individual that reacts to sound or struggles to settle, a noisy apartment building can be more demanding than the floor plan suggests.

Being left alone should be trained gradually. Start when the dog feels secure at home, leave for a very short time and increase it only while the dog remains calm. The breed often being described as affectionate does not mean every Whippet develops separation problems, and a second dog is not a reliable solution. Assess the individual dog's behaviour and take a step back in training if it shows signs of distress.

Plan for warmth, rest and safe transport as well. A short-coated dog may need extra protection in cold weather, but fit and freedom of movement matter more than a long equipment list. A quiet, sheltered sleeping place and gentle handling after strenuous activity also help you notice wounds, soreness or changes in movement early.

Before buying a puppy, ask for specific evidence:

- registered information and dated heart and eye results for both parents;
- BPH results or a clear description of temperament in the parents and close relatives;
- information about injuries, heart disease, eye disease, testicular status and immune-mediated disease in the family;
- the breeder's plan for socialisation, habituation to different environments and support after the puppy goes home.

The Whippet is best suited to someone who values a close companion while respecting that it is a fast sighthound. The deciding question is not whether the breed is always calm, easy or family-friendly, but whether you can provide safe exercise, consistent training and room for the variation between individuals.
