Your dog is missing

If your dog has gone missing, there are several things you can do yourself to make it easier for the two of you to be reunited.

Dogs sometimes run away or disappear in other ways – and it’s both frightening and stressful. But in fact, the vast majority of dogs are reunited with their owners within a few hours – either on their own or with the help of the finder, the police, neighbours, or others.

If your dog is missing – do this:

Step 1. Check your immediate surroundings

Search in the area around your home and in the places where you usually walk your dog. Dogs often move in the same directions they’re used to walking with their owner.

Step 2. Call the police

Call the police on 114 14 and report your dog missing.

Step 3. Talk to neighbours and put out a missing-dog notice

As mentioned, most dogs are found and returned to their owners within a few hours. But if your dog has been gone longer, you can:

  • Talk to neighbours, people passing by, and others. They may have seen or heard something.
  • Put up flyers where you live and report your dog missing. You can also contact local animal shelters.
  • Place a missing-dog notice in the local newspaper and/or online. There are many different websites as well as Facebook pages and groups for different counties and cities where you can report a missing dog.

Step 4. Contact DjurID.se

Contact DjurID.se (the SKK ownership register) and inform them that your dog is missing. They have a dedicated page where you can report lost dogs: Bortsprunga hundar - DjurID.se. At the same time, check that your contact details in the register are correct so that whoever finds your dog can also find you.
