Have you just gotten a dog and started thinking about your vacation plans? Make sure you plan so your four‑legged friend can come along. How should you think when you want to travel with your dog? Here are lots of great tips and places to visit!
Now that spring is here, brighter, longer and warmer days are just around the corner, and vacation time will soon be here. Dogs, just like people, want to spend time with their family and friends all the time – including on holiday. Take the chance during your time off to really enjoy some quality time with your best friend.
We’ve launched the Dogs app, available to download here for App Store and here for Google Play. In the app you can find tons of dog‑friendly hotels, restaurants, parks and much more that you might need when you’re traveling with your dog.
A few selected places to visit with your dog
¶Gotland
Gotland is Sweden’s largest island, located in the Baltic Sea about 100 kilometers from the mainland. It’s a very popular destination in summer. There’s a beautiful town and plenty of lovely beaches. A real hidden gem is Hotell S:T Clemens, which has excellent reviews and is the hotel we recommend if you’re visiting Gotland this summer with your furry friend. If you want to find other hotels on Gotland, you can use the Dogs app.
¶Abbekås
In beautiful Skåne you’ll find Abbekås, located between Ystad and Trelleborg. There are many wonderful sandy beaches here, and there are also beaches where dogs are allowed to swim together with their owners. If you need a hotel in Abbekås, we recommend Hotell Mossbylund, which is dog‑friendly. If you want to find other hotels in or around Abbekås, you can use the Dogs app.
¶The West Coast
If you’re in the mood for a city break, Gothenburg is an excellent option! There are many dog‑friendly restaurants, parks and hotels here. Of course, Gothenburg has plenty of places to explore; a perfect idea is to have a picnic in Slottsskogen with your dog. There are lots of great hotels to choose from in Gothenburg, but if we have to recommend one, it’s Hotell Pigalle. Why? Because your dog gets its own dog bed, organic food, special “dog beer” and treats so your best friend can really feel spoiled. And if you book a room with your dog, they donate 100 SEK per night of your stay to homeless dogs.
¶Stockholm
The city where the royal family lives offers many cozy places for you and your dog in summer. There are loads of lovely parks to visit with your best buddy. Naturally, there’s also a huge selection of restaurants and cafés where dogs are welcome. There are many great hotels to choose from here as well. Feel free to use the Dogs app to find one that suits you.
¶Vemdalen
Scenic Vemdalen offers experiences for the whole family. In Vemdalen you can make the most of summer and everything that comes with it. Hike, fish, paddle, bowl, play mini golf or tennis with the family. Hiking in Sånfjället National Park is also very popular. Dogs are welcome in many places in Vemdalen. Storhogna Högfjällshotell & Spa is dog‑friendly, and your dog gets its own food bowl and bed. Everyone who books a dog room also gets a private patio door with a view of the mountains.
Things to think about before vacationing with your dog
-
Read up on the city before you go; that way you can save time. The Dogs app is a great option that can help you save time.
-
Dogs are almost always welcome on public transport, but it never hurts to double‑check!
-
If your furry friend gets injured, it’s always good to be prepared. In the Dogs app you can find the nearest vet from your current location.
-
Remember that dogs don’t handle heat as well as we do. Make sure your dog doesn’t overheat and always have water available in case it gets thirsty. There are lots of great water bottles designed specifically for dogs.
-
One last thing we feel we have to mention, even though most people already know this: NEVER leave your dog alone in a car during summer. It’s life‑threatening!
